Daily Cupcakes - February 8th, 2012

The Colorado Avalanche haven't been talking to Jones about extending his contract.

There's at least one member of the Colorado Avalanche that knows that he could be on the move.

Adrian Dater of the Denver Post reports that winger David Jones, who has scored 10 goals after scoring 27 last season, is a prime candidate to be traded.

Jones will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, and he and the club have not had any discussions about a contract extension.

The Fourth Period believes that the Avs are shopping a defenseman.

The leading candidates are rumored to be pending unrestricted free agent Shane O`Brien and Kyle Quincey, although the latter is expected to bring the most in return.

Quincey, who is currently earning $3.13 million and is slated for restricted free agency this summer, has collected four goals and 18 assists for 22 points in 48 games this season.

CBC's man-games lost to head injuries vs suspension list:

Total - 925 man-games lost to head injuries so far this season.

Total - 114 games $1,999,319.53

Keep Quincey and O'Brien

They are both in my fantasy land team for next year! WTF?

Parise – Stastny – Hejduk/Jones/Hishon

Semin – Duchene – Mueller

Landy – O’Reilly – Ruutu/UFA

Galiardi – McClement – Winnik

Johnson – Suter

Quincey – O’Byrne/Wilson

O’Brien – Barrie/Elliott

Trade Hejda for.. yeah what ever. Trade Jones and one of Wilson/O’Byrne!

Cap hit next year.. 67.1M That’s adding 7,6,5 and 4 million plus raises and resigning UFA/RFAs. The cap only needs to go up by 2.8 million for that to be possible CMON we can do it. =)

Yeah I know I am up way to early and probably a little crazy… so what it’s fun to dream about how dominant that could be.

by CobraAcesS on Feb 8, 2012 6:29 AM MST reply actions

Hejda has been playing well. Quincey was pretty damn good early, but has left a lot to be desired lately. SOB is a perfect addition to a team looking to make a Cup run.

My worry about trading O’Brien is that it makes the Avs look like a sign and trade team.

by c6hor8 on Feb 8, 2012 6:47 AM MST up reply actions

Trading SOB only makes sense for the Avs if they are officially out of playoff contention at the deadline. Otherwise, he seems like the best “rental” on the Avs

Goalie coach? We don't need no stinking goalie coach!

by chiavsfan on Feb 8, 2012 6:58 AM MST up reply actions

I guess that’s true. I am not even sure why you trade him though. I think he’s needed on this team, but, then again, With Hejda, Wilson, Quincey, and Johnson there O’Brien prevents one of the younger guys from starting next year.

I definitely don’t think we should trade ROB… he has way more value to us than we could possibly get for him in a trade.

Is the NHL twitter account trolling Osgood?

DYK? Over the last 3 seasons @DetroitRedWings are 106-44-18 when Howard starts, but 20-22-8 when a backup (Osgood, Conklin or MacDonald) do.

Just my opinion, but if we keep playing like shit, move stas, Quincey and jones (not O’Brien). Try and get something back that rocks and make up (somewhat) for the piece of dogshit trade for varly. Sacco probably won’t survive either way and we’re young enough to take another dip in the draft (if we have any picks + FA.. we have the cash).

If we’re in it… Get something really good for stas/Quincey and evaluate jones accordingly. Who the fuck knows?? As always it’s a fucked up year with fucked up decisions to make.
Not oppossed to Stewart again, but a bigger hitter with years attached would be nice/again, love to retrieve one of those picks for varly! Just stings a bunch because I don’t live in Estes anymore and ive watched varly here in PA (fuckin great— should have got Holtby though). Hope I’m wrong, but we’ll see. Sorry, just plowed through a bunch of Dale’s pale ale.. Colorado beers are at a premium in PA, still waiting on the arrival of Fat Tire.

by Estes2York on Feb 8, 2012 4:09 PM MST via mobile reply actions

I really don’t understand the push to move Quincey. who exactly would repalce him? The guy is a solid #2/#2 type that plays well in any situation. Those guys don’t grow on trees. There’s no one in UFA to replace him!

by thedoctor on Feb 8, 2012 4:33 PM MST up reply actions

Totally agree. Just looking for a bigger return?? Kinda grasping at straws.. Guess I’m just really pissed about the R.O.I. In the trade for Varly. Quincey was nice in the Smith trade, he’s played well, my wife loves him. Have to admit, my kid plays hockey locally and we do the “Hershey bears” thing and Varly rocks, his playoffs with the caps a couple years ago was awesome; I totally see why they went for him, but (the cost!).
I fuckin truly hope he just comes out next start and kills it and never sits again. I think he’s that good, but I’m tired of living in the past. There will be no Roy again. We’re in this together all over the continent.

by Estes2York on Feb 8, 2012 4:52 PM MST via mobile up reply actions

No disrespect, but

I really think you’re wring. Varly was a first round pick. Nothing in his career to date has done much to knock the shine off of that pick. Therefore, a first round pick was necessary to acquire him. The second round in the subsequent season was what was necessary to beat the other bidders. Not sure why everybody thinks this cost is so high. You wanna be upset about his inconsistent play or you don’t agree that this was the season to make that deal because the rebuild isn’t over? That’s fine. But harping on the cost is one of the weaker arguments in my opinion.

If we don't get our sauce, we ain't watching the game!

by Mike @ MHH on Feb 8, 2012 7:39 PM MST up reply actions

I think that the main problem is that we have such a big logjam on D and still have some great prospects on the way. I really do like Quincey but he’d get a much much better return in a trade than a guy like Wilson or SOB.

I don’t even see why we should be obligated to make a trade. I saw in the Hawks game when Jones scored, he seemed a bit muted, I thought at the time, that he knows he’s out of here. The fact that they haven’t discussed an extension just reinforces that.
