At a Loss

My second FanPost! Those of you familiar with me may see me as somewhat of an optimist when it comes to the Avalanche. This may or may not be fair, I actually see myself as more of a realist. But that is not here nor there. As I watched our beloved team eliminated from the playoffs last night, I was quite taken aback. How did this happen? How could such an incredibly talented collection of players, well coached, well supported, and generally destined for greatness, fail to make the playoffs? Some possible answers after the jump.

First, and I hate to do this because it sounds like excuse making, but we have to look at injuries. Not only did several key players miss significant time this season, but more is coming out about players playing with injuries. Duchene, Downie, and McGinn were known to be playing severely injured last night. My guess is that almost every other player on the roster was playing with at least one if not multiple severe injuries. We're talking skull fractures, broken legs, and in some cases legal blindness. I don't know if others have as keen an eye on the action as I do while watching games, but at times this season these injuries were very apparent to my trained eyes. This is not some conspiracy theory, I am just dealing with facts here.

However, if we were to get into conspiracy theories, I'm afraid I do have one. Did anyone else wonder why the team seemed to be so up and down in their performance? Not only from game to game, but from period to period, and moment to moment? Well, I do have a theory on this. How closely are the team's water bottles checked and monitored? My guess is not closely enough. No, I'm not talking about a Boston Red Sox story of a team boozing it up during games on the bench. However, isn't it possible that someone unscrupulous was slipping something in to those water bottles during games when they had a chance? To be even more bold, isn't it also possible that this is a part of a league-wide conspiracy against the Avalanche, because otherwise how would the playing surface be leveled against such a talented collection of players? I do think it is not only possible, but probable. In short, I believe this substance being added to the Avalanche water bottles was designed to sap and impurify all of their precious bodily fluids.
