In a somewhat surprising move, Greg Sherman and the Colorado Avalanche have extended veteran goalie Jean-Sebastian GIguere. As per CapGeek, he signed a 1 year $1.5M extension with a "Feaster-esque" No Move Clause. Giguere has played great for the Avalanche and acted as a solid, stabilizing presence for young goalie Semyon Varlamov so it's good to see him returning to the fold. That said, it is odd to see the Avs signing a contract extension and a no trade clause, both unprecedented during Greg Sherman's time as GM.

Bottom line: J.S. Giguere is no spring chicken.. but he should have enough left in the tank to put together 2 more good years in the Burgundy and Blue. Although the Avs are deep in goaltending prospects, its doubtful any of them would be NHL ready by 2013 when Giguere's previous contract expired. The extension provides good depth and stability in the Avs net allowing Varlamov and the other kids to grow a bit.
