Well, the Tour With the Monsters made a stop at The Pond at Chagrin Falls today, for an open practice followed by autograph session on the ice. It's Joey Hishon's 22nd birthday, but I didn't see any cake. I guess his early birthday gift was the GWG on Friday. I made it there about halfway through the event, and honestly don't know enough about hockey to tell you much about how the actual practice went. I did try to at least figure out who was skating and who was not.
David Van der Gulik and Daniel Maggio were not there. I thought I might see Vandy since I had heard he should be back soon, but I asked around and was told it's probably two more weeks (total rumor from someone whose name I don't even know).
Karl Stollery was not there and I had not heard that he was hurt or anything, so I asked one of the other players if he was injured. He only said "he's not here today." I guess they train them young to be noncommittal and vague when you ask them something.
I also didn't see Mark Olver but I may just have missed him. I can't pick them all out by sight from a distance, and in practice, their numbers are only on their helmets. Stollery and Lerg are easy to spot (with their blond curls sticking out of their helmets), as is Sgarbossa (at least in profile--who could miss that nose?).
There was a really good crowd for the event and lots of fans on the ice afterwards for open skate and to get autographs. I was not one of them. I brought my skates but haven't skated in at least two years and was too chickens**t to put them on.
Don't know if I'll be able to make any of the other open practice dates, but if I do, I'll try to get some pictures, and hopefully get over myself and get out on the ice.
