Preview: Jets at Avalanche, Game 11

Tom Szczerbowski

The Avalanche try to continue their winning ways against new division rival Winnipeg Jets.

The Avalanche (9-1-0) are on a roll right now, and while it's still early, the points they've earned will only make things easier down the backstretch. Tonight's game features the Winnipeg Jets, another team on the second leg of a back-to-back. It took a shoot out last night for the Peg to take down Dallas, bringing the team's record to 5-5-2.

Friday night saw a dominate Avs team that featured Mighty Matt Duchene looking every bit an All Star throughout the game. The whole team put up a joint effort in the win, something that certainly had to make Patrick Roy happy. The win has started to quiet the doubters, but Colorado has a long way to go to prove they are really legit. (That doesn't mean it isn't fun to watch.)

The Jets haven't been faring well, particularly in division (2-3-1). Their goals per game are in the bottom third of the league at 2.33, compared to the 6th play Avs at 3.20. Goals against looks a bit better at a middling 2.75, but that doesn't compare to Colorado's 1.40. Power play and penalty kill have similar discrepancies. In other words, this is a game the Avs should absolutely win. Last year's team would lose. Terribly. Roy's Avs, though, seem to handle these kinds of games a bit better. Time will tell whether that includes the Jets.
