The Colorado Avalanche: News from around the NHL - October 8th, 2013

Doug Pensinger

Tonight the undefeated Colorado Avalanche take on the undefeated Toronto Maple Leafs.

Roy confirmed the captain would return after missing Friday's contest with a minor leg injury.

"We just wanted to make sure that we were on the safe side with this one," Landeskog told the team's official website. "So early in the season, there is no point to risking anything now. It was just a minor little thing so we made sure we took care of it right away."

P.A. Parenteau scored his first two goals of the season against the Predators. No. 1 overall draft pick Nathan MacKinnon assisted on the first Parenteau goal and has three assists in his first two NHL games.

"We're trying our best," Parenteau said of his third-line assignment with MacKinnon and Jamie McGinn. "MacKinnon has a lot of speed, a lot of talent. Jamie does his thing, he has a good shot and I try to do my thing. It's been working so far and hopefully we have more coming."

The Flyers have made a coaching change.

Peter Laviolette joined an interesting coaching fraternitywhen he was let go after only three games, all losses, by the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday.

Ken Hitchcock and Bob Hartley both shook off their early-season fates and landed other head coaching posts.

Not since Bill Gadsby was let go by the Detroit Red Wings on Oct. 19, 1969, two games into the 1969-70 season, has a head coach had a shorter season at the helm.

Don Cherry approves of Roy.

Don Cherry believes Patrick Roy’s outburst of frustration in his first game as head coach of the Colorado Avalanche last week was a good thing.

“Everybody’s saying, ‘What a bad thing.’ Are you crazy? All the players love this,” Cherry said over video footage of Roy’s outburst. “Look at the players looking in the background. They’re smiling. They love it. They’re in the game.”
