It was no secret last season that the Avs lost all their road games mostly because of poor defense. Roy brings the kind of knowledge to coaching of how the Avs can play better defense and lower the goalie's GAA.
Their are two schools of thought on how Patrick Roy will perform as Avs Coach. The first is he is another Adam Oates--who has the playing and coaching experience to bring the Avs back to the playoffs--like Oates did for the Caps.
The second school of thought is that Roy really lacks enough experience as coach, so the Avs will continue to struggle much as they did under Sacco. The Avs probably should have brought in Vigneault or Tippett.
Really I believe whether Roy succeeds or not depends on Sakic improving the roster. Drafting Seth Jones would improve the defense. Then Sakic and Roy have to look at Varlamov, and whether he should be replaced at goalie, or whether he can be coached up by Roy.
I really wish Roy luck with the Avs this season and hope he can bring the Avs back to the playoffs.
