Avs Roster Overhaul

After the Avalanches dreadful finish, I began to wonder how the team could have sunk so low. Their last playoff birth is only 4 years ago so how much could have changed? I did some research and found that almost all of the team was gone from that roster however. Take a look at these lineups (lineups are based on games played, not actual line combinations)

Patrick Bordeleau – John Mitchell – Chuck Kobasew

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Extras: Aaron Palushaj, Mark Olver, Ryan Wilson, Shane O’Brien, Stefan Elliot (I only included extras as players that played in more than 10 games)

Only 4 years have passed since the Avs last made the playoffs, and yet they now sit at the bottom again with their 3rd top 3 pick in 5 years. Since the 2009 playoffs and the 2013 season, the Avs only have 6 players, Wilson, Duchene, Stastny, O’Reilly, Hejduk, and McLeod, still on the roster. Meanwhile, the 2009 Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins still have 9 players, Kunitz, Dupuis, Cooke, Crosby, Malkin, Eaton, Letang, Kennedy, and Fleury, still on their roster. To be fair, the Penguins did have a lot more talent to keep around, but this team also brought in a lot more talent with Neal, Iginla, Morrow, and Murray.

The Avs roster overhaul may not seem to be that much removed from the Penguins, but consider this. If the Avs had kept Stewart, Liles, and Anderson, would they still be sitting in last place? Each one of these players is playing a key role on their playoff team. Have replacements of Varlamov, Zanon, and Parenteau really filled that gap?

My conclusion is that the Avs have been too active during this rebuilding process. The misses just outweigh the gains. Sure McGinn, Parenteau, Landeskog, and Johnson have made positive impacts on this club, but obviously not that significant if the team finished last. Going forward, the Avs must lock up their core and stick with it. They must decide next year if Varlamov is the answer. They need to keep Duchene, Landeskog, Wilson, Johnson, O’Reilly, McGinn, Barrie, and SETH JONES on the roster for a while. Hockey teams aren’t built around one player, they are built around 8-10 core players. The Avs still have this core, they just need to keep it intact and be patient with rebuilding. Or we could be facing another last place finish 4 years from now.
