As we all very well know the Avalanche have won the NHL draft lottery and hold the first overall pick. The big question is what should we do with that pick? For most of the season, many believed Seth Jones was a clear number one, but with Nathan MacKinnon’s excellent performance at the Memorial Cup, it leaves many Avalanche fans wondering whom should we pick. I believe that MacKinnon should be the player the Avalanche pick, as I personally believe he will become an all star in the league and is less of a risk to pick. Picking defensemen is risky, look at Erik Johnson, he was picked first overall. I am pretty sure the Blues would have much rather had Jordan Staal or Jonathan Toews (forget Toews playoff performance this season). Tampa Bay also picked Victor Hedman over Duchene, which also was a mistake. Although we already have some decent centre men, I believe that it is time to part ways with Paul Stastny. I believe he could help bring in a defenseman that would boost our weak defensemen. We need more than one defenseman to improve our defense and one 18 year old is not going to fix our defense woes. Although Seth Jones is the best defensemen in the draft, he is not going to make a huge difference in his first few seasons. If a developed defensemen was coming in then he could make an immediate impact, and you have to remember we do have Duncan Siemens coming soon along with some other young defensemen that are currently developing. Jones is a risk that I think would backfire. In the end, I think the Avalanche should take the best player available and that is Nathan MacKinnon.
