The Colorado Avalanche: News from around the NHL - July 5th, 2013

Zanon and his beard have been bought out - via the standard method:

...the Avs did a standard buyout of Greg Zanon’s contract. They put him on unconditional waivers for the purpose of buying him out. Zanon had one year left on his deal, worth $2.25 million.

By doing a standard buyout, the Avs must give Zanon two-thirds of that remaining salary in a lump sum ($1.5 million). That $1.5 million counts against the Avs’ salary cap, but they can spread it out over two years.

Grabovski did not like getting bought out, he seemed to think it was on the coach.

"[Carlyle] make me [expletive] play on the fourth line and he put me in the playoffs on the fourth line and third line again," Grabovski told TSN 1050 reporter Jonas Siegel. "Yeah, I don’t score goals. I need to work on more about that. I know that. But if you feel support from your coach [you'll find success]. I don’t fee any support from this [expletive] idiot."

In case you missed it, Ovi is an All-Star - twice!

Alex Ovechkin has made history.

Although this time he has some misinformed hockey media to thank for the odd honour.

Ovechkin was named to both the NHL’s first and second end-of-year all-star teams on Wednesday, as the Washington Capitals captain was the overwhelming choice as the top right winger in the game and narrowly beat out Edmonton’s Taylor Hall as the second highest ranked left winger.

Ovechkin, of course, switched positions this year under new head coach Adam Oates, and the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association, which votes on the all-star teams, took great lengths to inform voters of the highly publicized change for one of the most high profile players in the sport they cover.

Free Agency officially starts today. TSN has some interactive lists, including the Top UFA list.
