The Colorado Avalanche: News from around the NHL - August 30th, 2013

The Bruins are happy with their GM.

The Bruins have signed general manager Peter Chiarelli, who built the team that reached the Stanley Cup Finals twice in three years, to a four-year contract extension that would keep him in Boston through the 2017-18 season.

Chiarelli, 49, will enter his eighth season with Boston when training camp opens next month. The Bruins have qualified for the playoffs in six of his first seven years, compiling a 50-35 post-season record and winning the Stanley Cup in 2011.

The Bruins will hold a press conference with Chiarelli on Friday.

Kovalchuk is a captain, once again.

Former — and future? — NHL star Ilya Kovalchuk was again named captain of his KHL team, SKA St. Petersburg, Thursday, but the recent New Jersey Devil says he hasn’t forgotten about the Stanley Cup.

Kovalchuk signed a four-year deal with SKA in July, walking away from an NHL contract set to pay him $77 million over 12 seasons. The 30-year-old, who scored 417 goals and 399 assists in 816 NHL games, also served as captain of the KHL club during the NHL lockout.

Nine times out of 10, the internet is — for a lack of a better word — stupid.

It is a wasteland for anonymous folks who thrive on negativity.

But there is the odd exception, like a 26-year-old hockey fan’s choice to publicly reveal he is gay.

By all accounts, this is a feel-good story no internet troll can derail.

Although his friends and family have known for some time now, Matt Horner, a research assistant at McMaster University, came out Tuesday to the general public in a post on his hockey blog called Five Minutes For Fighting.
