Preseason Game Five Preview: Dallas Stars Rematch

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Second matchup of a preseason home-and-home as the Avs take on the up-and-coming Stars in Dallas at 6:30pm MT.

Yes, the preseason is still happening. Only two more games left.

Tonight, the Avs seek redemption against a Dallas Stars side that won 5-3 a couple of nights ago. But mostly it's all about the final cuts. And four of them need to be made:

Semyon Varlamov
Sami Aittokallio
J.S. Giguere

Nick Holden
Tyson Barrie
Nate Guenin
Erik Johnson
Jan Hejda
Cory Sarich
Matt Hunwick
Ryan Wilson
Andre Benoit

John Mitchell
Matt Duchene
Jamie McGinn
P.A. Parenteau
Steve Downie
Marc-Andre Cliche
Paul Stastny
Guillaume Desbiens
Nathan MacKinnon
Alex Tanguay
Brad Malone
Cody McLeod
Patrick Bordeleau
Ryan O'Reilly
Gabriel Landeskog

Considering the newly-announced pairings of Benoit-EJ, Barrie-Wilson, and Hejda-Sarich, it will come down to a fight between Hunwick, Holden and Guenin.

The only sure-fire cut at this point is the Finnish netminder Sami.

As for the Dallas Stars, they have some cuts to make of their own. It may soon change, but as of this writing they have seven youngsters competing for three spots: Valeri Nichuskin, Alex Chiasson, Scott Glennie (whatever happened to this guy? Drafted high in 2009 and still can't crack a roster. You tell me, Dallas fans), Chris Mueller, Colton Sceviour (who made a very big statement against the Avs on Tuesday), Brett Ritchie, and Luke Gazdic.

Why do I have a feeling that out of all the new division rivals, the Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche will butt heads the most in the near to distant future?
