The Colorado Avalanche: News from around the NHL - January 3rd, 2014

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Bobby Ryan is upset about the Olympic snub.

On Wednesday, ESPN published a remarkable piece of reporting from behind the scenes at USA Hockey, describing in detail how the decision-makers made their decisions for a roster that will compete at the Olympics next month in Russia.

On Thursday, one small part of that story became a story on its own.

Bobby Ryan, the Ottawa Senators winger, was ultimately left off the roster that will leave for Sochi next month. The 26-year-old was part of the team that won silver four years ago in Vancouver.

Lupul may get a suspension.

The Toronto Maple Leafs just can't seem to stay away from the NHL's player safety department.

The Leafs' Joffrey Lupul will have a hearing with the NHL on Friday afternoon after cross-checking Detroit's Patrick Eaves during the Winter Classic on New Year's Day.

Five Leafs have already been handed suspensions since the start of pre-season games: David Clarkson, Phil Kessel, Carter Ashton, Nazem Kadri and Dion Phaneuf.

The Avs beat the Flyers.

Downie and Avalanche left wing Maxime Talbot were playing against their former teams for the first time since they were traded for each other Oct. 31. Talbot drew a Sean Couturier tripping penalty earlier in the period.

The Flyers lost left wing Michael Raffl to a concussion on a hit by Landeskog in the first period.
