The beloved Monsters [19-21-4] fire up the bus and head north to Grand Rapids for a weekday roadie against the hated Griffins [29-13-4] today. The Griffs are the Western Conference leaders and defending Calder Cup champs, as well as being the farm team of the despicable red wings, so this should be fun.
Last weekend Lake Erie took on NHL starter Cam Ward, Colorado fan favorite Aaron Palushaj and the Charlotte Checkers in a two game set. Friday's game featured fantastic performances by both Calvin Pickard and Ward and was decided by a lone Paul Carey goal scored in the 1st period. Recap here. In Saturday's rematch, Picks and the Monsters played well but not well enough and lost the game on a pair of late goals by Paloosh and Zach Boychuk. Recap here.
I've made this rant before, but it bears repeating: Stop with the "going with the hot hand" policy! There are 2 good young goalies in Cleveland that both need work, use them. What could it possibly hurt to assign games on a rotational basis? More consistent rest and more game-specific preparation will make the team better and won't dull the goalie competition one bit. I don't understand how playing one guy until he loses while letting the other get stale benefits either of their development.
Duncan Siemens came off the injured list last weekend and played decent, if sparingly on Friday. Saturday he was nearly up to full speed and looked pretty damn good playing regular shifts. J.T. Wyman has been practicing with the team but has yet to get back into the lineup, let's hope he comes back soon. Joey Hishon left Saturday night's game at some point and did not return, no word on why.
