Both The Denver Post and Swiss Hockey News have reported that the 27-year-old Swiss netminder Reto Berra has been re-signed to a three-year contract. The terms are currently unknown. The deal will be officially announced on Friday.
Berra was acquired by the Avalanche on trade deadline day from the Calgary Flames in exchange for Colorado's 2014 2nd round pick. Colorado paid a somewhat lofty price to acquire Berra, so it comes as no surprise that they would lock up the then-pending UFA before hitting the market.
Current backup J.S. Giguere has not been the same goaltender he once was, and this move may all but confirm that this will be Jiggy's final season in the NHL.
Berra has yet to play a game for the Avs, but is confirmed to make his debut as a starter on Wednesday's game against the Winnipeg Jets.
