With Stastny gone to St. Louis, that means there's a vacancy for one of the Avs' alternate captains. As we know, Landeskog is the leading man, while McLeod holds the other alternate captain spot. So now, who'll join those two as the official leaders of the team?
I see two guys that have a valid case to make for the role. First is Duchene, arguably the team's the best and most talented player. And it's no secret there have been plenty of people wanting him to have that extra "A" knitted on the front of his sweater, myself included. He's also one of the most fiery and passionate players the Avalanche have. When Duchene gets pumped, it's hard to not get pumped yourself.
The other man I see who might get the nod is Alex Tanguay. One of the most beloved guys since the franchise moved to Denver, he's also one of the best veterans Colorado has. He's been around the block, knows how to get to the Cup, and is as good as of a leader the Avalanche have.
MacKinnon is probably a few years away from getting this sort of real consideration. Iginla and Briere, despite the veterans and natural leaders they are probably won't get it as new faces to the locker room. If O'Reilly re-signs, I'm not sure he's a guy the rest of the players look up to for inspiration and leadership. There's no one else that immediately comes to mind who I can think of that will be in the running for this. My guess is that Duchene's going to get the nod.
