O'Reilly trade targets around the league

Let's get our tradesterbation on! For whom can the Avs trade O'Reilly? What is he worth? What team will want him enough to give up assets for him? Here's my list of wants from each team. It has to be a young player with upside that can contribute now as well, because that's what we'd be giving up in ROR. Our long-term holes look to be top 6 wing (left or right) and top 2/4 LHD. A "+" next to a player indicates I believe more should be added by the other team to make it a fair deal for the Avs. A "-" means I think the Avs would have to add to the package. I then provided my take and graded the fit for a trade between the Avs and that team on an A though F scale. Some of these are going to be unrealistic but what else are we going to do in July?!

Anaheim

Cam Fowler (LHD) -

-- Bad fit. Ducks have their centers and wings and little room going forward under the cap.

FIT: D+

Arizona

Oliver Ekman-Larsson (LHD) -

Keith Yandle (LHD)

-- Could be a fit. Yotes still need offense and two-way forwards and have defense oozing out their ears. OEL is probably a pipe dream but Yandle could happen.

FIT: B

Boston

Torey Krug (LHD) +

Dougie Hamilton (RHD) -

-- Bruins don't have the room to meet ROR's contract demands and probably don't want to give up their cheap young guys as their current core is getting older.

FIT: D-

Buffalo

Tyler Myers (RHD)

Cody Hodgson (C) +

-- This could work. The Sabres can take on salary now (actually they need to) and O'Reilly could project as part of a future core with Reinhart/McDavid/Eichel.

FIT: B-

Calgary

Sven Baertschi (LW) +

Sean Monahan (C) -

-- I was thinking the Flames could be a fit. They'd probably really like a one-two punch of Monahan and O'Reilly down the middle. Then I looked at their roster and realized there is nobody I'd consider giving ROR up for other than Sean himself.

FIT: D

Carolina

Jeff Skinner (LW) -

Elias Lindholm (C)

Justin Faulk (RHD) +

-- This is what I was hoping to find by doing this. I really want Jeff Skinner now that I've thought about it. Not sure about Carolina's interest in ROR as they have the Staal brothers down the middle and Skinner already on the left. But imagine bringing Landy's buddy in who, by the way, is locked in to a long term deal already. I didn't originally have a - next to Skinner but I am now thinking the Avs would have to add. I see no reason for CAR to do that deal.

FIT: B-

Chicago

Nick Leddy (LHD) +

Niklas Hjalmarsson (LHD)

Brandon Saad (LW) +

-- Yeah this ain't happening. CHI being a big division rival and having no room for big overpaymets and all...

FIT: F

Columbus

Ryan Johansen (C)

Ryan Murray (LHD) -

-- Trade contract disputes? I'd love Johansen in our top 6 long term. I also love Murray. Either of these deals would be great. Does CBJ want ROR? They have the space, but don't seem to want to overpay for an RFA as seen by the Johansen situation.

FIT: B

Dallas

Brenden Dillon (LHD)

Valeri Nichushkin (RW) -

-- The Stars have Seguin/Spezza down the middle and Benn on the left but they could be looking for a younger guy to fill Spezza's role long term. I don't think this is likely in division and isn't a great fit. But I'd love Val slotting in with Duchene or a Dillon/Johnson/Barrie D core.

FIT: C-

Detroit

Gustav Nyquist (RW) -

-- I don't really want any red wing stench, and most of their valuable players are old as shit. I don't think Nyquist is great but his career year will inflate his trade value, not to mention trading him will cause riots and fires in det-- wait a second, nobody lives there and there's nothing left to burn anyway, so to hell with it-- wait a second....

FIT: F

Edmonton

Jordan Eberle (RW)

Justin Schiltz (RHD) +

-- This could work. Edmonton needs more defensively responsible forwards and RNH is their only legit top 6 C. Trading Eberle would free up space for ROR. It could be a win-win for both sides although I'd worry about the Avs' forwards in their own zone. -- also I had a dream last night that we traded ROR for Hall straight up so that was nice...

FIT: B

Florida

Dmitry Kulikov (LHD) +

Jonathan Huberdeau (LW) -

-- Also a good fit. Give us Kuli please. I'm assuming Barkov and Ekblad are untouchable and Hubs is likely as well.

FIT: A-

Los Angeles

Slava Voynov (RHD)

Jake Muzzin (LHD)

-- They don't have room for Ryan O'Moneybags.

FIT: F

Minnesota

Mikael Granlund (C)

Nino Niederreiter (RW) +

-- Meh. Minny stench is as bad as or worse than detroit stench. Nobody I really want and these guys are probably our biggest rivals.

FIT: F

Montreal

Alex Galchenyuk (C)

Max Pacioretty (LW) -

PK Subban (RHD) --

-- Subban is a pipe dream unfortunately. I'd be alright with either of the others though. The Habs could use some depth down the middle.

FIT: C

Nashville

Filip Forsberg (RW) +

Roman Josi (LHD) +

Seth Jones (RHD) -

-- Other than Nashville being a division rival, I think this makes a lot of sense. They also have defense oozing out the ears and are looking for a forward to build around.

FIT: B+

New Jersey

Adam Larsson (RHD) +

-- I know a lot of us would love to get Larsson as he has had trouble cracking the lineup in NJ. He is exactly the type of reclamation project the Avs have traded for in the past (EJ). I think the Devils would have to throw a bit more in to get ROR. If Larsson was LH this would be a perfect match.

FIT: B

New York Islanders

Kyle Okposo (RW) -

Ryan Strome (C) +

Travis Hamonic (RHD) +

Calvin de Haan (LHD) +

-- The Isles have lots of room to spend big time character bucks, and I wouldn't mind getting a package back centered around any of these guys. They have a gaping hole at LW that could use fillage too. This looks like a good fit on the surface. Maybe AJ can clarify if ROR would suit NYI's needs.

FIT: A-

New York Rangers

Derek Stepan (C)

Ryan McDonagh (LHD) --

-- McD is untouchable unfortunately, but I like to imagine him in burgundy anyway. Rags fans are high on Stepan as a top center so I don't know if we'd be able to pry him away. I don't know, there's not much on the NYR roster that I want, other than McDonuts.

FIT: D

Ottawa

Jared Cowen (LHD) +

Bobby Ryan (RW)

Kyle Turris (C) +

-- Cowen is their only interesting young D (other than Karlsson) and I'm told he sucks so it would probably have to be a bigger package around him. Bobby would be nice if he were signed longer than through next year. Otherwise not much from the Sens.

FIT: C-

Philadelphia

Sean Couturier (C) +

Brayden Schenn (C) +

Wayne Simmonds (RW)

Luke Schenn (RHD) ++

-- Couter is supposedly mini O'Reilly (on the ice) and losing ROR means losing a lot of defensive prowess from the forwards that Couturier would fill. I like him better than B. Schenn. ROR for Simmonds? Hell yes please. He's signed at less than $4M through 2018-2019 and could be a force with which to be reckoned on either Duchene or MacKinnon's right side. Luke Schenn? meh. Maybe both Schenns together, but I'd rather Couter or Simmonds.

FIT: A-

Pittsburgh

Brandon Sutter (C) +

Olli Maatta (LHD)

Simon Despres (LHD) ++

-- Pitt has some good young D prospects that have not disappointed in the show do far. ROR + pick for Sutter and Despres? Sutter could be a shut down 3rd line C with the ability to fill in on the top 6. I'd also do ROR for Maatta straight up, although it'd be nice to get a roster player that isn't still super early in development. The Pens are pretty set down the middle but don't have much on the left side.

FIT: B

San Jose

Tomas Hertl (C) -

Marc-Edouard Vlasic (LHD) -

-- I don't think SJ will be trading away any of its young pieces while trying to rebuild on the fly. Would Pavelski be a good return? He's better than ROR right now but age has to be a factor.

FIT: D-

St. Louis

Jaden Schwartz (LW) +

Vladimir Tarasenko (RW)

-- I don't think we're going to be letting StL have any more of our two-way forwards. But Schwartz and Tarasenko are fun to imagine in burgundy. Not much as far as young NHL ready d men other than bringing Shatty back.

FIT: F

Tampa Bay

Jonathan Drouin (LW) -

Victor Hedman (LHD) -

Tyler Johnson (C)

Ondrej Palat (LW)

Alex Killorn (C) +

-- If Stevie Y even pauses to consider ROR+ for Drouin, put the pedal to the metal and fuckin doo eet. Same goes for Hedman. Reuniting MacK and Drouin is probably a pipe dream and Hedman is likely intouchable, though. TB has a lot of interesting young pieces. Their future is certainly bright. We'd have to take some salary back somehow (Brewer?) because they're right up against the cap.

FIT: B

Toronto

Matt Frattin (RW) ++

James Van Riemsdyk (LW)

Nazem Kadir (C) +

Cody Franson (RHD) +

Jake Gardiner (LHD) +

-- JVR is certainly a viable replacement for ROR on the left side going forward. He and/or Gardiner would make the most sense for the Avs' needs. Toronto is definitely lacking a top 6 center and trading away two good pieces for one would be a very Leafy thing to do.

FIT: A

Vancouver

Alex Edler (LHD)

-- VAN doesn't have many young forwards that have contributed in the NHL so far. They're looking to "re-tool" so a big piece like O'Reilly to center around could be appealing to them. After losing Kesler, they are lacking in their defensively responsible centers. I think Edler's game is more valuable than ROR's but he is older and in his prime, while ROR has yet to enter his. This could be a decent deal straight up.

FIT: B

Washington

Marcus Johansson (C) +

Evgeny Kuznetsov (C) +

Karl Alzner (LHD)

John Carlson (RHD) +

-- Alzner is my favorite target here.Looks like WSH could use a top 6 two-way center behind Backstrom too.But they are probably content to hang on to Kuz and Johansson to fill in their C spots.

FIT: C

Winnipeg

Evander Kane (LW)

Jacob Trouba (RHD) -

Zach Bogosian (RHD)

-- Winnipeg isn't going to let go of Trouba unless it's for a king's ransom. I'd love Bogosian but he doesn't really fit with EJ and Johnson on the right side long term. Kane is the best fit. Winnipeg doesn't seem to like him especially and they need centers. That's the perfect trade if Winni weren't in division.

FIT: B

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

My favorite realistic trade targets:

Simmonds, Kane, Josi, JVR, Kulikov, Gardiner, Alzner, Despres, Johansen, Yandle

My favorite targets that might be within the realm of possibility but are likely just out of the reach of reality, and whose acquisition would spurn everyone singing Roykic's praises for a very long time:

Trouba, Skinner, Drouin, Hedman, Okposo, Pacioretty, Murray, OEL, Fowler

What do you think? Am I way off in O'Reilly's value? Who would you most like to see in burgundy if we have to say goodbye to Ryan?
