The Avalanche announced that Karl Stollery was called up from Lake Erie late this afternoon. Before trade speculation begins, the Monsters had 8 healthy defensemen and the Avs had 6 once Stefan Elliott was returned. I wouldn't read much into it unless Jan Hejda (or someone else) is scratched tonight.
Stollery has been recalled a couple times already this year, most recently from 2/6 to 2/10, and has played in 5 games and has yet to score his first NHL point.
For those wondering why do this now rather than, say, when Elliott was sent back, the only thing I can come up with is this might have something to do with how long Erik Johnson is supposed to be out and how long Stollery can stay up without being subjected to waivers. Is that vague enough for ya?
