Well, the two-week NHL shutdown known as the Olympics is upon us.  MHH wasn't around for the Torino games, so we don't have experience with the lull.  I'm interested to see what we do.  Don't fret, we have some plans, I'm just curious to see what our great community does with two Avalanche-free weeks. Feel free to discuss all things Olympic in this thread.  I'll try and have one up every day for general discussion purposes. Toss out any ideas you have for topics you'd like to see covered during the Olympic break. Go USA!!

Is Stastny Underperforming?

There have been some grumblings and mumblings around the comments section here at MHH about Paul Stastny needing to step up and contribute more to the success of the team.  People have opined that he isn't earning his $6.6 million contract (FYI, all of the contracts I'm discussing are in terms of cap hit, not year-by-year payouts). I've had SoS on my keeper league roster for a couple of seasons now and have a fairly good grasp of his statistical value, so I figured I'd take a closer look at his performance and compare it to his contemporaries.

First up, how is he looking in terms of career track:

2006-2007: 28 goals, 50 assists in 82 games for a 0.951 PPG average.

2007-2008: 24 goals, 47assists in 66 games for a 1.076 PPG average.

2008-2009: 11 goals, 25 assists in 45 games for a 0.8 PPG average.

Those three seasons average out to an average of 0.959 PPG or 0.33 goals per game and 0.63 assists per game.

This season: 10 goals, 35 assists in 49 games for a 0.918 PPG average (0.2 goals per game and 0.71 assists per game).

This projects out to about 17 goals and 59 assists for the season. That would put his season PPG at 0.927.  Perhaps a tick off of his career average, but he'd set a new personal best for assists if that projection holds up. Assuming (for the sake of argument) that his season ends with that 0.927 PPG, that would be about $87k per point.  That's a purely stats and cash analysis which has none of his intangibles, like his ability to elevate the play of any warm body put on his line, his two-way play, or the fact that he has taken more face-offs than anybody in the league.

Now let's see how he stacks up against his contemporaries...

Buy now! Trade Deadline quietly approaches.

If you were General Sherman, what would you do with your 2010 Avalanche roster come the March 3rd Trade Deadline?

March 3rd is closer than it sounds. The Olympics run from Feb 12- Feb 28. So really, besides the 3 days between when the Olympics end and the trade deadline hits, there are only about 3 weeks of NHL play for the AVS' brass to do some buying or selling. Thankfully, the AVS look more like buyers rather than sellers like everyone presumed. As 3/3/10 approaches we'll have more trade coverage, but it's never to early to make unfounded predictions and spawn some conjectural chatter.

More than anything, I'm curious to see what you fans think/want for your beloved Avalanche. The BIG QUESTION is: Should the AVS tempt fate by screwing with the great chemistry the team currently enjoys? With the team as young as it is, I think chemistry will play a HUGE role down the road to the post season, so I'm hesitant to suggest any trades (Tucker and Clark excluded of course).

Let's take a gander at some possible moves for the Avalanche by position.

If it were up to you, would you make some moves by the trade deadline or leave your roster intact?

How Are YOU Going to React?

Frustrated-02_full_medium

via i.ehow.com

So, let's take stock for just a minute:  8-1-2 to start the season, contributions from everybody we were excited about (namely Duchene, O'Reilly, and Anderson), effective special teams, two wins over a hated rival team in the Central Division, grueling roadtrip under our collective belts with great results, and last but not least, an exciting team to watch. Life is grand.  But, as we discussed yesterday, there is some statistical likelihood that things can turn for the worse, either for a short period of time or an extended one.

I'm not trying to rain on anybody's parade, because I'm loving this team as much as anybody on this site. I'm not wishing for the team to fail.  I'm not even predicting a failure or stating that it will occur. I'm merely wondering what you, the fan, will do if Anderson lays an egg during a game?  Or if Clark and Foote combine for some more brutal PK time and this time it costs the Avs the game?  Or if the Avs lose a stinker to a team like Anaheim or Atlanta? Some have stated that they expect the Avalanche team to go winless, so that every win is a gift.  Others have started mid-seed playoff spot chatter.  My honest question is: how will you react when the fun train derails, even momentarily?  Put some conditions on it if you want:

I won't get mad unless it gets bad for a string of home games.

or

As long as they trade <insert player name> when it turns south, I'll still be here.

So how are you going to react?

It's finally here! The last day of the 2009-2010 version of the Colorado Avalanche Blogger Roundtable!  We've had a ton of questions and a ton of contributors this year and except for a few timing hiccups, I think it's gone pretty well.  But enough of that self-congratulatory crap; ON TO THE FINAL QUESTIONS!!

MHH gets the dubious honor of book-ending this whole smorgasbord o' fun with both of today's Roundtable questions.  First up:

Final chance to look like an idiot: What is one long-shot expectation for the season?
