Game 12: Avalanche 3, Penguins 2

Despite playing up to everyone's elevated expectations as always, Sidney Crosby couldn't keep his Penguins ahead of the Colorado Avalanche for very long.  The Kid scored two goals in the first period but it wasn't enough in the end.

The Avalanche won 3-2 on incredibly strong play by the team's grinders, specifically Ian Laperriere, Wyatt Smith and Ben Guite, who put on quite a show for his father who was in the stands.  Guite finished the game with an assist and a goal, the game-winner in the second period.  Lappy also had two points and Smith tallied a helper, not to mention some incredible play on the penalty kill.

Jose Theodore looked shaky early on but got his stuff together and finished with a very solid performance overall, including 26 saves on 28 shots, one of which was an unbelievable last-second save on Crosby, who thought he had an open net but was denied.

The other two goals also came in the second period, first on a power play when John-Michael Liles stuffed a loose puck through the Pittsburgh goaltender after it was freed by Ryan Smyth.  Wojtek Wolski scored just 40 seconds later to extend his points-scoring streak to eight games.

The Avalanche defense had some serious problems in the first period, but quickly closed down on the Penguins, who appeared to run out of steam as the game progressed.  The only player on the ice really hustling was Crosby, while the rest seemed content to watch.  Crosby couldn't get much done, though, since the Avs played him hard all night---including Marek Svatos, caught here playing good physical defense AGAIN.  When is he going to remember that he is a one-dimensional player?

The Colorado penalty kill, as briefly mentioned before, continued its overall dominance, stopping five of six Penguins power plays.  Wyatt Smith led that unit, diving across the ice and breaking up plays like his life depended on it.  Considering that Brad Richardson is almost ready to return to the lineup, Smith might really be fighting for his continued existence in the NHL---and doing well so far.

The Avalanche is now 6-0 at home, and extends its winning streak to four straight games.  Three other Northwest Division teams did Colorado a big favor by losing last night, and now the Avs are tied for first place with Minnesota at 16 points, with Calgary still behind by one.

One interesting note, the AP recap of the game misstates that the three Avalanche goals came in the third period instead of the second.  CBS Sportsline ran the story with a bad headline to match, but ESPN ran the story with a corrected headline.  The flub still persists in the article itself, though.

The Avalanche next play the struggling Vancouver Canucks at home in the Pepsi Center on Saturday.  With the way he's been alternating the two goalies, Coach Q will likely start Peter Budaj in net opposite Roberto Luongo.

Stars of the Game:

  1. Ben Guite (1g, 1a)
  1. Ian Laperriere (0g, 2a)
  1. Sidney Crosby (2g, 0a)

Nice Recap...

However, I REALLY liked MYFO's summary of the game:

"It’s been so long since I gave a thought to Jose Theodore, the Rogaine chugging poon hound who once meant so much to us in Montreal. It seems he’s been busy knocking up his lady love and, for the most part, letting in softies. But last night he was victorious! Take that Sydney Crosby and your two-goal game! The Avs prevail with three third period goals and Joe Holy Fucking Shit Sakic kept his points streak alive."

OK, I liked it mainly cuz of the perfect description of Theo, but as summaries go, it ain't bad!

Sorry I missed the thread last night.  In retrospect, pick-up was a waste of time compared to the unadulterated Crosby love-fest on Altitude.  And that's saying something.

Re: Recap

Yeah, nice recap except that the Avalanche didn't score three goals in the third period.  I wonder if MYFO actually watched the game...

True...

It was just a quickie summary, probably based on the AP story which was filled with inaccuracies.

thoughts, in no particular order
  • Svatos, depite not making the score sheet, played really well in his own end, and made some stellar offensive plays.  He really deserves to be on that top line with Sakic and Smyth.
  • The Duke looked a little lost on the ice, as was expected.
  • I watched Stastny as close as I could, and I'm still not sure what ails him.  Best thing I could come up with was how quickly he's passing - he's not carrying the puck very much, and on the PP he's only making very safe passes, no creativity.
  • You gotta wonder where Richardson plays on this team, after the strong game by Smith.  I wonder if Hlinka may catch the scratch (though I wish it was Arnason ;) ).
  • Clark had another solid game, jumping into the play effectively without giving up odd mans the other way, and generally playing solid in his own end.  though you'd never know it from the bitching on HF boards...unreal...
  • Lappy's role in the comback was more than his assists.  Maybe I'm the only one that noticed, but he drew the too many men penalty while trying to start that fight.

all in all, a solid effort and another late lead held by the Avs.

Re: thoughts

Great points, all of them.

I think The Duke will be firing on all cylinders tomorrow against Vancouver.  He had to get his legs back (and his back back) and it's okay because the 4th line picked up the slack.

Stastny, like you said, doesn't have the puck very much.  In fact, I can't think of the last time I saw him make a drive toward the net with it.  He almost looks scared out there for some reason.  Or, maybe Zetterberg paid him off.  He was all like, "Dude, Stastny, you're still pretty young.  Save the Hart Trophy for me this season and it's all yours for the rest of your career."  Yeah, that's it.

Coach Q already has a bare-knuckles cage match all set up and ready for Richardson and Smith.

Re: Clark.  That's exactly the reason I don't read message boards anymore.  There are some serious dipshits with too much Internet access out there.

Lappy is my hero.  Always and forever.
