Pitchforks and Torches

                                                 Pitchforks and Torches

It sorta bugs me on a fundamental level that this is my first 'legit' post as a contributor to this fine establishment.  A glance at the standings by anybody that hasn't seen the last 8 or 9 games would reveal that the Avs have regained some of the dominance that was a given for the franchise prior to the lockout.  For those of us that have actually watched the train wreck unfold lately, it is a different feeling entirely.  I lay ALL the blame for the recent stretch on the coaching staff, particularly the head honcho, Joey Quenneville.

Star-divide

Anybody that watches hockey knows that over the course of an eighty-two game season, consistency wins games.  Even great teams will hit speed bumps and maybe even have a rough stretch, but true championship teams (or even legit playoff contenders) don't get bogged down in losses or stray too far from the systems and game plans they've used to success.  There is no panic and these teams plug away and right the ship.

Not so with the '07-'08 Colorado Avalanche.  Let us count the inconsistencies:

  1. The Avs blew out of the gate with a dominant offense, but the line combos that worked so well for the first handful of games were quickly scrapped at the first hiccup.  The remainder of the 1st quarter of the season has seen line combos that last a couple of shifts AT THE MOST, with linemates moving two and three lines down the depth chart for no apparent reason.
  1. Preseason stud Hlinka got a token game or two on a legit scoring line before being relegated to the depths of the bench.  Don't try and tell me he may have defensive responsibility issues.  If that was true, why was he still logging quality minutes on the PK until his healthy scratch?
  1. What does Scott Parker bring to the table that warrants him dressing in favor of McCormick who worked his tail off in two games and is rewarded with a seat in the pressbox?
  1. Speaking of tough guys working for no reward, why was Guite watching from the stands in the Calgary game?
  1. How is Boots supposed to get any confidence when, after winning the first game on that horrid road trip, he's immediately benched for Theo?
  1. Speaking of Theo, why was he starting against the Flame-Outs?  Sure, he'd played well against them earlier in the season, but he tanked in his last appearance against them (4 goals on 15 shots???) and in his following starts against other NW opponents.  Didn't we play this game to death early last season?  Budaj wins games that Theo doesn't.  There is NO EFFIN' POINT in trying to get your money's worth out of Theo now!!!  He's a lost cause!  The cautious optimism earlier in the season has blown up in everybody’s face.  See if Phoenix wants him.  Apparently the Great One is trying to build an entire team out of throwaway goalie parts...

My rambling, incoherent, semi-rant above has a point.  All of the above issues are coaching decisions.  Seriously, could Quenneville have screwed the pooch any more thoroughly than the last eight games or so?  In my estimation, that's when the one-and-done goalie rotation hit full speed, and subsequently, the team hit a wall.

The rampant tinkering with the lines, the questionable starts/scratches for quality role-players, the goalie-go-round, the inconsistent efforts from the top lines, the inability to match-up players in opponent’s arenas.... the list goes on.  (NOTE: The final nail in the coffin is the tie worn by Quenneville last night.  Holy shattered retinas Batman!) SOMETHING must be done to allow this team to display the talent and depth that were cornerstones to this season.

In closing, I’d like to note that Washington scrapped Hanlon this week because he'd "lost the team."  A team, I might add, that was supposed to be done rebuilding and have acquired some punch in the offseason, much like the Avs.  Therefore, I'm firmly convinced that Giguere needs to pull the chute on this season and replace Joey Q.

AMEN

I couldn't agree more. I don't see any other explanation for how a team with THIS much talent can play THIS badly. Q needs to go, and he needs to go before this season is too screwed up to salvage.

Two things
  1. Great first post, and I'm starting to agree with the "Q Must Go" crowd.
  1. Who do the Avs replace him with?  Granato?  Not that Tony Granato's a bad coach (he has the best win percentage of any of Colorado's four coaches), but is he the guy to take over?  Who would be an alternative?

by Joe Dunman on Nov 25, 2007 1:32 PM MST reply actions

hmm

i don't think Granato is the answer at head coach for sure.  isn't he part of te problem now, as the PP coach?  i'm not sure he should go either though -- there's much to be said for a level of consistency across head coaching changes.

The names that jump to mind that are out there for head coaches are Pat Burns (if he wants to) and Bob Hartley.  I guess you can count Glen Hanlon there too now.

I don't know anything about Hanlon except that his teams sucked, and a defensive-minded, caustic coach like Hartley is not The Answer for a team like this.  Plus Joey hates him.  That leaves Pat Burns, and who knows if he even wants to coach anymore.

There might be one more option though: Bryan Trottier is around hockey still -- he's in a player development role for the Islanders.  He never got a fair shake with the Rangers, and I always loved him on the bench when he was here.  Why not him?

Good choice

Trottier would be a great pick, if only for the fact that his mustache is a fitting replacement for Q's:

Coach Q

Hey I'm new to the site, and I'm also Mike, lol. Anyway I totally agree with you, Quenneville is not patient enough with the lines and benches good players too often. Liles, Hlinka, Guite, I mean these are all really good players and he has benched all of them at least once. I'll admit that Liles is not playing to his potential this season, but benching Guite and Hlinka is absurd!

Now about the goalies though, I do not agree with you. The goalies have been collectively bad, the team has been collectively bad, I'm sick of people putting the blame on Theodore. Let's just look at the last 4 games;

Saturday against Calgary, Avs lost, Theodore was mediocre, he made a couple of good saves, but let in a couple bad goals. Either way, we only had 7 shots in the first 2 periods (not good). Theodore finished with 27 saves on 32 shots.

November 22nd against Edmonton, Avs won, Budaj was good enough. IMO, he let in one really bad goal to Horcoff. Budaj finished with 14 saves on only 16 shots.

November 20th against Calgary, Avs lost, Theodore wasn't good enough. Even though he finished with just 11 saves on 14 shots, Nolan's goal was the only bad one and he made several pretty good saves.

November 18th against Minnesota, Avs lost, Budaj played really bad. He let in 4 goals on just 26 shots, but the story here was who scored the goals against him. Come on, Stephane Veilleux? Aaron Voros? Matt Foy? Who are these players? All 4 goals were very stoppable.

What I'm saying is that Budaj and Theodore have both played equally throughout the season. They've both had some high points, and both have had some really low points.

Let's face it, Theodore is 31, he is already too old and not playing nearly good enough. And while people keep saying "oh, Budaj is such a great youngster with lots of potential", he is 25 already, he has been in the NHL for what is now his 3rd season, so where is all this potential? Why have I not seen it yet? I have seen flashes, but he is not consistent. I remember when we had Roy, he would steal games for us, these guys steal games for us. They might do it once in a while, but not several games in a season, like Roy used to.

Bottom line; we should have given up on both guys and signed Bryzgalov. Now that he is whooping major @ss in Phoenix, we need to go after someone else. I strongly doubt that Budaj will blossom into the next Roy (or even a 2003-04 Aebischer for that matter), and I even more strongly doubt that Theodore will return to his MVP form. Once again, bottom line; we need a good goalie, Budaj and/or Theodore will NOT lead us to the Cup, not even to the WCF.

And that is my rant for today.

Go Avs!

correction

What I meant to say in the 8th paragraph is that these guys (Theodore and Budaj) DON'T steal games for us. They might do it once in a while, but not several games in a season, like Roy used to.

agreed

i've been harping on trading for Bryzgalov since the offseason.  since he was let go for nothing, clearly, no one was offering anything of value.  It's impossible to say what was done by the Avs, but you have to think he would have been available for a Liles or Svatos.  maybe even Arnason!

imo, at this point, the only goalie worth anything that might be available is Huet in Mtl.  Otherwise you might as well give Weiman a real chance at the NHL level.

by thedoctor on Nov 26, 2007 9:33 AM MST up reply actions

Cristobal Huet

Huet is a good goalie, but I would much rather try to get Halak from the Habs. Halak has plenty of potential and talent. Plus he's got Patrick Roy on his mask! But do we really want another goalie from Montreal? Roy worked great, Theodore did not, would the third time be a charm?

by Mike the Avs Fan on Nov 26, 2007 3:28 PM MST up reply actions

despite all the hf jokes

The habs would be dumb to trade Halak, so I doubt he's on the market.  Huet will most likely leave Mtl as a UFA if he's not traded, while Halak is under contract for a good while yet -- cheap.  Price still needs a backup!

by thedoctor on Nov 26, 2007 3:47 PM MST up reply actions

Let's be realistic...

Outside of maybe Luongo in Vancouver, Marty in Newark,  and an occasional Giggy sighting in Duck-ville, there isn't a goalie in the show who can carry Roy's jock.  Comparining any Avs goalie to him is a lost cause, IMO.

Budaj is a good goalie.  With the team in front of him, he should be playing with a 2-4 goal cushion on most nights.  But when said team IS PHYSICALLY UNABLE TO SCORE ON THE PP MUCH LESS EVEN STRENGTH, any goalie will look like a sieve.  Look at the Avs roster and tell me that this is a team that should have to rely on goaltending and defense to win games.  They aren't built that way, but they've played that way during stretches this season.

The next Avs coach should keep his foot on the pedal for the entire game and force opponents to match up against our personel, not the other way around.  Outside of Detroit, there isn't another team in the Western Conference with the scoring depth in Colorado.  Why aren't they scoring?  Coaching, that's why.  Goaltending has little to nothing to do with that, IMO.  The only time goaltending kills the offense is when he lets in a backbreaker of a soft goal, or THEO SPECIAL as I'm want to call them.  Boots has the occasional soft goal, but look at his games and tell me that he has an inordinate amount of backbreakers.  He doesn't, IMO.

Yes coaching IS the problem

I agree, this isn't a team built on defense or goaltending, which really makes you wonder; why is our coach Joel Quenneville? He used to be a d-man, and he used a D-first style with the Blues, we do NOT need a D-first style here in Denver. If you think about it, no goalie has been good under him, remember Roman Turek? He sucked! And after that the Blues had about 10 goalies in the next 2 seasons. I just don't think he has the right attitude towards goalies.

I'm not saying that the goalies are the problem for the Avs, I'm just saying that it's not all Theodore's fault. But still, I would much rather have a Jaroslav Halak in goal right now instead of a Budaj or a Theodore.
