Game 25: Avalanche At Kings, Preview And Open Thread

I'll keep this short and sweet.  The Kings are not really that great of a team, and they haven't played especially well at home.  Anze Kopitar and new goalie Jason LaBarbera will be fun to watch over the next several seasons, but overall the Kings are a weak team.

The Avalanche, however, are a very strong team.  A very strong team that plays like crap most of the time, at least most of the time in the last seven games or so.

Speaking of playing like crap, no word yet on whether or not Jose Theodore will start tonight in net, but I have a feeling that he will.  TJ Hensick should also get to play another game, and hopefully this time he takes a shot on goal or two.

Svatos and Laperriere are still listed as injured, so don't expect to see them on the ice at all.  I wish Lappy's knee would hurry up and get better already.  Good lord.

The game starts tonight at the same time as last night's game: 8:30 PM Mountain time, 10:30 Eastern.  No idea if I'll be around to watch it, but if I am, you can rest assured I'll be posting comments like crazy.  Hopefully they won't all be negative and frustrated like last night.

ESPN preview.

RE: hannan/cumiskey

Don't look at the +/-, it's not a good statistic. Hannan plays with Cumiskey a lot and usually we get scored on because Cumiskey screws up, but it gives Hannan a minus too. So Hannan is being wrongfully blamed if you look at his +/-.

Rob Blake

He used to be my favorite player on the Avs.  Why he decided to return to the place where he was booed every time he touched the puck seems stupid.  Did he feel he wronged the fans in LA and decide to make them like him again?

I'm glad LA is in the conference basement.  I have a little resentment toward him.

Focus

There seems to be a conscious effort by the Avs to just throw the puck at the net tonight. There's still too much ticcy-tic-tac-toe hockey going on, but It seems like they are taking a lot more shots from the slot and point.

Second period

The Avs came alive!  They looked like a cohesive unit on every shift, and everybody was peppering the net.  Hlinka deserves at least one goal just for effort.

And Hensiiick was siiick on that breakaway goal.  Just think, in four or five seasons, it will be Stastny, Wolski, Cumiskey, McCormick and Hensick as the big veteran names on the team.  That seems okay to me.

by Joe @ MHH on Dec 1, 2007 10:05 PM MST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Was interviewed at intermission on hd net.... and he was pretty damn low keyed and well spoken like he had been there before (like joe said).  Could not even get a smile out of him when the announcers congratulated him on his first goal.  Good stuff

I was talking about Hannan because they were showing, in slow motion, how Hannan screwed up a pass interception.  That's all.  It couldn't have been anyone else's fault.

Re: Aubin

The refs should have measured.  A 5 on 3 would have been great.

PK

Very stupid slash on someone (didn't see the number) May have been Hlinka. Whatever it was it was unnecessary Despite dominating we're only up 3-2, and an odd goal could be costly

WOW

What a save by Clark, maybe Theo. But Wow that was close

Hlinka

GOAL Nice job by Guite to take it in front and Hlinka hammers the rebound home.

Or

Or the Sharks last night.  Or any of the teams in the last five losses...

by Joe @ MHH on Dec 1, 2007 10:51 PM MST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Confidence

They should be gaining some confidence though.  If they are to be an elite team, they have got to dominate against terrible teams.  It may have taken most of the game but hey, the final score will say otherwise.

Re: Confidence

Yep.  Beating the Kings 5-2 (or 6-2 on an empty-netter in a couple of minutes) is exactly what the Avs are expected to do.

Three

Three minutes left.

by Joe @ MHH on Dec 1, 2007 10:54 PM MST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Outtie

Less than a minute left, and I need to get some medicine for the Wife at the store... LAter all, finally a good road effort (minus the first 20 minutes)

well we won

i thought that smytty, and hannan were our stars this game. theo played well too, not many shots against, but there were 3 or 4 really good saves, and the goals he let in didn't suck (usually he lets in hella weak goals), they were practically unstoppable. good game overall

Final

The Avs did exactly what they should do against teams like the Kings---DOMINATE.

Ryan Smyth, Hensick, Son of Stastny, Scott Hannan, and everybody else really brought it together with Sakic, Bruno, Lappy, Svatos being out.

This team is so deep it's ridiculous.

by Joe @ MHH on Dec 1, 2007 10:58 PM MST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Depth

Hensick should stay on the team even when the rest get healthy.

Re: Depth

How about these lines?

Smyth-Sakic-Brunette
Hlinka-Stastny-Hejduk
Wolski-Hensick-Svatos
Lappy-Arnason-Guite

With McCormick as the extra scrapper instead of Scott Parker.

Damn.

Re: Depth

Nah, scratch that.  Arnason can be the extra guy.

Smyth-Sakic-Brunette
Hlinka-Stastny-Hejduk
Wolski-Hensick-Svatos
Lappy-McCormick-Guite

The fourth line would be a juggernaut.

by Joe @ MHH on Dec 1, 2007 11:04 PM MST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Good point

McCormick stays

Re: Depth
Those lines look nice.  Teams would have problems keying on anyone for defense.
