Game 27: Blue Jackets 5, Avalanche 4

Last night's game was a travesty, that's all there is to it.

Luckily, Pittsburgh saved the Avalanche the indignity of being tied with Edmonton in the Northwest standings by beating the Oilers 4-2.  I called Sidney Crosby (3 assists) and thanked him.

The Avs have now lost eight of their last twelve games.  The wheels are officially starting to fall off, if the bus hasn't already lost at least one already.

This should seem like an "oh well, shit happens" kind of game, but it's so much more.  It's indicative of everything that's going wrong with a team that seemed like such a legitimate contender for the division title just a couple of months ago.

And here's the "no shit" comment of the year:

"A brutal ending," Quenneville said after the Avs' third-period collapse led to a 5-4 loss to Columbus. "A tough one to swallow."

Your continued existence behind the Colorado bench is getting pretty tough to swallow, Q.

The next Avalanche game is at home tomorrow night against the Philadelphia Flyers.  I certainly hope Jose Theodore's in net and all the offensive lines look completely different, because those strategies have worked so well this season.

Please feel free to discuss your outrage, anger and/or drinking game suggestions here.

Stars of the Game:

  1. Rick Nash (2g, 0a)
  1. Kris Beech (0g, 3a)
  1. Ryan Smyth (0g, 3a)

depressing game

only one line that can score, a defense that's horribly out of position all night long, a goaltender with no confidence, and a team that's going through the motions.  this team has quit on it's coach, he's just messed with them too much.

Clark was responsible for one goal at least, Arnason 2 (Nash's wraparound, good god that was bad).  Sauer come back!!!

Big trade needed.  New Coach needed.  No Arnason needed.

Re: depressing game

Arnason deserves a multi-game benching, at the very least.  He's been useless for several games now.  He wasn't even good against Edmonton, and that's his favorite punching bag.

Clark needs less ice time, too, because he's getting worn out by the third period in most games as of late.

While

I still proclaim this game to never have happened, Mrs. @ MHH has delivered on the drinking game premise (she's much more experienced than me at this stuff, cuz I don't likey the boozey).

Now, without further ado, your 2007-2008 Colorado Avalanche Drinking Game!

  1.  Sloppy, lousy missed pass in defensive zone - shot
  1.  Stupid penalty with one-goal differential- shot
  1.  Beach ball/pillow-soft goal against- shot
  1.  Empty Power Play - shot x 2
  1.  End of 1st Period...

That's it, cuz you'd be hammered out of your gord by then so dial 911 for a quick trip for alcohol poisoning.

about theodore

Well I can almost guarantee he'll start. Direct quote from coach Q on the 5th goal; "the rebound was juicy" Back to the goalie carousel of doom I guess. And I can also almsot guarantee that no line shall be the same from last game. I can totally see Wolski pairing up with Hannan on the defensive corps and am already imagining how great Skrastins will play centering Stastny and Parker.

Re: about theodore

Not that Coach Q reads this blog, but you may not want to type too much like that...he's bound to get ideas.

budaj didn't play well

worst game I've seen from him in a while.  he was all over the place, and his rebound control looked like, well, Theodore.

He certainly deserves his share of the blame for this loss.  He makes me more nervous all the time about his potential going forward.

Re: Budaj

I think Budaj looked just fine for the first 40 minutes.  There were no rebounds off of him in either the first or second period.

By the third, it was like his pads were made entirely of whatever it is they make superballs out of.

This is scary

OK check this out

Budaj:    2.95 GAA, .887 SV%
Theodore: 2.95 GAA, .888 SV%

The statistics are almost EXACTLY the same!!! And they suck balls too! This is NOT good man!

wow

that is terrifying.  Maybe we should actually trade for Huet or Emery.

Re: wow

Under no circumstances are the Avalanche allowed to ever trade for a goalie with Montreal.  It worked once, but that was a crazy fluke.  The second try was a miserable failure.  They shouldn't push their luck.

I'd take Emery though.

by Joe Dunman on Dec 6, 2007 5:04 PM MST up reply actions

that is horrible

Sheesh, Abby isn't even in the NHL right now, he never sucked arse that bad.  And here I thought that Theodore was far and away the suckiest suck that ever sucked, and he isn't even quite the suckiest on the team, purely statistically, that is.  Although if I had to pick one goalie to single handedly lose a game, Theo would still be my man, by a hair over Budaj.

by Bob in Boulder on Dec 6, 2007 4:06 PM MST up reply actions

Budaj could have been better

but when your team falls asleep in the third period, what can you do.

We might have a second scoring line if Q could find someone who can put Wolski's set ups into the net.  Arnason either hits the post, fires wide, or can't figure out how to get the puck on his stick and take a shot. Even Hannan is looking better on offense than Arnason (maybe I shouldn't have said that).  Actually I'm waiting for Cuminsky to be the seventh D-man and play on the 3rd or 4th line as a winger half the night. Oh that's right we would need 7 healthy d-men to start with. Leopold, now that's another busted trade with Calgary.
