Game 29: Blues At Avalanche, Open Thread

Sorry about the lack of preview today. I was unavoidably detained most of the day, and unable to post a preview or a graphic until half way through the game. Please forgive me.
Go Avs!

Missed the first chunk of the 1st period...
but have already seen on inneffective Av's PP, Clark miss an open shot from ten feet out (seriously, you play in the NHL, and you can't hit a 6x4 net from 10-15 feet away with nobody in front of you? Such is the Avs D), and Cumisky bend time and space to break up a breakaway by the Blues.
Not sure how the first goal was scored. Anybody see that?
THE DUKE!!!
Strikes again!!!! Smyth creates a turnover down in the left corner by knocking a man off the puck, slides it over to Hejduk, and we're tied 1-1.
Beauty play.
Big PK upcoming..
for the Avs. Guite is playing strong.
The Altitudes have pronounced Toivonen's name at LEAST two different times since I tuned in.
Tivvanen and Tevoynen. WTF?
Another PK
to kill in the early goings of the 2nd. Good work by the Avs.
Smyth seems to have some real jump tonight and is forechecking aggressively.
So far
Clark has been good and bad. More consistant please.
Finger was out of position on Blues goal, don't know if it mattered though.
Good game so far from both teams.

Madison the Kid-caster
is 1000x better than anybody else on the Altitude crew.
The pro broadcasters got pwned by a 9-year-old girl...
I don't know if my night can get better.
haynes doesn't suck though
Don't bag on Haynes like that (even if he is a better radio play caller.)

Norm Jones just called Theodore Budaj.

HOLY SH**
What a pass by Hlinka

The missing H-Link and the Svats Machine
Almost get another.
I'm hopeful that those two can work out some chemistry.
Toivonen having rebound issues
Avs need to keep banging away at the netminder and driving the net.
So far so good
NOBODY make any comments about the Avs goaltending.
Don't wanna pull a Joe Jinx at this point...
Anybody else see that?
Theo didn't let Cuminsky know that it was an icing. The kid was a tad upset, and rightly so...
Just a personal gripe
but I HATE when goalies play the puck behind the net and kick their stick to push the puck up the corner. Why, cuz it can backfire easily, as evidenced when Theo did it there late in the 2nd and the puck popped out AWAY from both d-men and right to a Blues' stick.
It's a little think, I know, but Joe pays me for the little things...
heck yeah
Now THIS is the Avs team we all know and love!

Altitude feed craps out
but the 2nd period sees the Avs score 5 GOALS, all but one at even strength, usually the result of great work in the offensive zone, winning battles and an aggressive forecheck and attacking D.
Where has that been all year?
Surprising to say...
I don't really think Toivonen is at fault for any of the goals. The Avs were just pwning left and right. Now they pull him? Why? Can't blame him for the Avs sudden surge.

SOOOOOOOFT
That was a ridiculously soft goal on Theo.
Welcome to a ten-goal game, with 18 minutes left to play.
Avs up 6-4
Theo cheating...
and not with Paris. Terrible goal to near post.

My favorite line
My favorite line on the Avalanche has got to be Ben Guite-Cody McCormick-Brad Richardson.
Man, those guys are gritty!
yeah
you score 2 goals with the other guy in, give up 6 with toivonen (none of which were his fault), but that's a weird strategy.

McClement
is pissing me off more and more as the game goes along. How dare he board Stastny like that?
by Mike the Avs Fan on Dec 9, 2007 8:01 PM MST reply actions
Guite
Some great forechecking by Ben Guite on his last shift. That guy isn't the best skater in the world be he moves around the ice pretty well.
SOS from Smyth
Great work down low. Good pressure. Let's see if they take the foot off the gas again...
7-4 Avs
Stastny GOAL!!!
Paul Stastny scores on a great pass from behind the net by Ryan Smyth! WOW!
2g 2a for SOS!
Hejduk
How about 5 points for Hedj? Nice to see him stepping up ...

Goalie Question
When a goalie taps one of the posts with his stick or glove, is this his way of figuring out his position or what?
Re: Question
I'll defer to Mike on this one, but it's both a positional thing and a nervous tick for a lot of guys.
Yes
It's to set his angle relative to the net. For some goalies it's more ritualistic than practical, cuz by the time you reach this level of play, most good goalies know their positioning from peripheral indicators like the lines, dots, and boards. It's a good habit to check you depth and center yourself on the goal so that you always start from the same position as you telescope out from the net.
There, I think I sufficiently nerded that up for you.
Penalty
Jay McKee gets called for ramming Arason into the boards. Another PP for the Avs coming up.
They're still showing some really great puck movement tonight. They haven't looked this much like a real team since the early games of the season.
Re: Hey Joe
All over the place. It's been a long day.
Thanks for covering my ass with the thread. You're the man.
No problem
I don't have any fancy graphics or preview words of wisdom though. Feels kinda incomplete...
SHUT UP McNAB!!!
McNab just called Hejduk a "perfect" hockey player. Dude, he's good, but come on!!
Don't waste our time with this crap.
Another goalie change
Apparently Murray want to inflate Toivonen's GAA as much as possible tonight...
Haynes!
SHUT UP!! Now Haynes is talking about the Avs getting their 1000th win, but all he's doing is jinxing them.
Lord knows they could give up a four-goal lead in 7 minutes. Don't put it past them.
Weird
Now that's a bizarre bit of trivia. The last time the Avs scored 9 goals was the Bertuzzi/Moore game back in 2004. Whoa.
exactly what i was gonna say
lets go for double digits

PP goal
Blues score on the PP with a great slapper past Theo.
Though the Avs are still going to win big, at least 9-5, let's not forget the fact that Theodore has allowed FIVE goals tonight.
That's not a good performance.
well
at least we won, thats what counts
by Mike the Avs Fan on Dec 9, 2007 8:31 PM MST up reply actions
I was just thinking
the exact same thing. 5 goals on ~30 shots = Not Good.
3 Stars
Smyth
SOS
The Duke.
Just checked
5 goals on 28 shots for a S% of 0.82. Ugg, that's worse than MY S% and that's saying something.
1000 WINS
This is the 1000th win for the Avalanche franchise (including time in Quebec).
14 total goals is pretty unbelievable.
More trivia
the first win for Quebec came in Colorado against the Rockies. What are the odds...
I'd like to know...
The number of games it's taken various franchises to get to 1000 wins. There were some rough years in Quebec, but given the Av's success since coming to Denver, you'd have to think this franchise would have to be one of the faster clubs to get to 1000 wins...

Outside of the Original Six
of course.
I think they mentioned that they were one of the fastest of the expansion era teams.
