Avalanche Blows It With Lousy Jersey Design

[First, a disclaimer:  I'm a huge fan of Uniwatchblog.com, as in, I'm a paid member with a membership card and everything.  I'm serious about "athletics aesthetics" and I think that how a team looks on the playing field/ice/court/pitch/etc. is almost as important as the way they actually play.]

Today, the Avalanche unveiled their new white and dark RBK Edge jerseys (pictured above).  While the official word from the Avalanche prior to the big reveal was "very little will change," it turns out that very much has changed, indeed.

First off, I think the new designs suck.  Hard.  I think the Avalanche blew a great opportunity to refine their fan-loved and league-respected uniform designs and instead tried far too hard to look cool (or at least different).  The end result is something definitely different, but not cool at all.

The initial response so far has been overwhelmingly negative, especially on the Avalanche.com message board and the NHL Tournament Of Logos blog.  But unlike most people, I'm actually going to explain (in detail) why I think they suck.

There is no reason why a hockey jersey should look like an apron or a smock, but the front piping (already seen on the new shirts of the Predators and Panthers) creates that illusion.  The piping shrinks the chest area, takes away room for the C and A worn by captains and alternate captains and makes the logo-filled front of the jersey seem even more crowded.  Worse, vertical piping such as that on the new Avalanche jerseys eliminates the best feature of traditional hockey design:  horizontal stripes.  It completely changes the "language" of what makes the hockey sweaters of old so distinctive.  What now separates the Avalanche from a football team?

Enough about piping, though.  Let's look at the atrocious sleeve design.  Gone are the jagged lines of old that tied the previous jerseys' overall aesthetic to the jagged A of the team logo.  In their place are straight lines without any divider between burgundy and blue.  In this photo you can clearly see the difference between the older version worn by Curtis Leschyshyn (center right) and the newer version on John-Michael Liles (center left).  The new jerseys now look like the cheap knock-offs of the old ones that seemed to pop up in the most awkward of places.  I guess we now know where the Avalanche got the inspiration for the sleeve re-design.

Now, on to the shoulders and neck line.  Paul at Uniwatch has long complained about logo creep (the growing presence of corporate logos on American professional sports team jerseys), and I share his frustration.  It's not the "Reebok Colorado Avalanche", it's just the Colorado Avalanche.  With that in mind, the giant logo on the back of the new jerseys is both ugly and inappropriate---especially since the lines of the shoulder are broken only to highlight that logo.  It's crass.

Speaking of broken color consistency, what the hell is up with the armpits?  Why change colors under the arms anyway?  And what's with the jagged little strip that extends down from the armpit?  What on earth is the purpose of that?  Sure, I know the jersey is broken into a series of panels, but there's no reason every panel has to have a different color.  It's unnecessary.

Finally, from a non-jersey standpoint, the "socks" (more like spandex leotards) are OK, generally maintaining the theme of the Avalanche socks of old.  Also, in the lone bid for true consistency, the pants have remained black, which is actually something that always bothered me.  I always felt the team would look better if they wore burgundy pants with the white jerseys and navy blue pants with the burgundy ones.  But I guess black will have to do.

Side note: I think it's funny that the Avalanche chose John Michael-Liles to model the new uniforms.  He's generally mocked pretty heavily already for being "the pretty one", and it says a lot that Super Joe wasn't present for the unveiling---out with the old, in with the new, I suppose.

So, in sum, I think the Avs made a huge mistake and dropped  a popular, sophisticated tradition that wasn't nearly old enough to be truly behind the times.  While teams like the Rangers, Bruins and Red Wings stuck to tradition and were applauded for it, teams like the Islanders, Vancouver and now the Avalanche tossed aside great traditional designs and went in the wrong direction entirely all while claiming to have the past in mind.  Bull.

I think this guy's expression says it all.  The Colorado Avalanche team might play much better this season, but they're going to look a lot worse.

Heartbroken

I don't hate this uniform as much as you do, but I don't really think the previous ones needed fixing...
It breaks my heart to see that this team can go wrong. That this team that has a league wide respected logo and uniform can do wrong.

Bah

Almost 5,000 miles away... It's the Portuguese Avs Fan!

Re: Heartbroken

Yeah, it's a real shame.  They made all the right moves this off-season when it comes to the players on the ice, but they couldn't get the uniforms right.

eh

they're freakin uniforms.  it doesn't really matter.

fwiw, I disliked our old ones (hi2u jagged lines and color patches), and at least in the case of the new white uniforms, I actually like them better this way.

besides, the Bronco's uniforms are still uglier, and it doesn't hurt them!

Re: eh

NO IT DOESN'T BECAUSE I SAY IT DOESN'T!  :)

also, in unrelated news, it appears all Avs fans are women to care this much about clothes their team is wearing.  if there's any more clothes talk from grown men, i'm bringing midol and tampons so you can all complete your transformations.  ;)

Re:

I will never understand the attitude that clothes and appearance don't matter.  They've mattered in every job I've ever had, every public event and/or ceremony I've ever attended, and every professional sporting event I've ever gone to.  I've never been to a game (in any sport) where another male hasn't said something to the effect of "hey, those uniforms look like crap" or "man, that team looks sharp."  A uniform is one of the key bonding factors for any team, and a good uniform is a source of pride almost as important as winning.

Not to mention that your comment is unbelievably sexist.

All that said, keep it coming.  I've got no problem with disagreement, so please, tell me I'm an idiot!  Don't hold back!

This is the Internet, after all.

Re:

I think you're reading into my comment a touch too much.  I was mostly trying to be funny.  I like uniforms, and I have commented on this change as being good and bad...and then it left my mind.  Hell, I've been a Broncos fan so long I don't think the concept of ugly uniforms CAN hold a spot in my mind longer than a few minutes or my head would have exploded in the 80s!

Also, the midol comment...come on, that was funny.  We're a bunch of men -- hockey fan manly men -- obsessing about clothes!  the irony of the clashing stereotypes of manly men hating clothes talk and women obsessing about clothes is staggering.  I'm just the messenger Irony sent!  ;)

But, as long as we're being serious, I root for my team because of who they are, and because they're playing for me a fan, not because of what they're wearing.

Remember that dirty f*** Matvichuk's hit on Forsberg in the 99 playoffs, when the drool/blood came out of his mouth as he screamed in pain...and then forsberg  came BACK in that game and played with one arm?  THAT made me an Avs fan.

Remember when Forsberg went down in the playoffs in 2001 and all seemed lost...and then the team just found another gear of work ethic and guts to win the cup?  THAT made me an Avs fan.

Remember when Sakic hit Stevens in the corner of those same finals and knocked him over, after all we'd heard about from the media was how he was going to knock SOMEONE on the namby-pamby Avs team into the next century?  THAT made me an Avs fan.

I guess I must be different from other fans, but that's what I root for -- the play and guts of my team.  I could care less what they're wearing.  and when I wear a uniform, it's really only a sign that I support my team, not their uniforms or the fashion statement of that uniform.  shrug

Re:

I always have to be careful what I type because sarcasm/kidding/fun is hard to convey.  Naturally I'm not offended by your comments or anything else I read on the Interweb.

We're still on the same page, just different paragraphs.

Make no mistake, gallant MHH members, I still love the Avalanche!  They could wear paper bags and bunny slippers on the ice and they'd still be my team.

Their horrendous new uniforms make me mad because they're my team and I want them to look tough on the ice---not like apron-wearing morons.  I complain because I care!

We agree

I mean we both pointed out almost the same things. The vertical piping the lack of space for a C or A, the no divider on the blue sleeves. It's uncanny.

Re: We agree

Let's not give ourselves too much credit.  Even a blind person could see the obvious design failures of the new jerseys.  They're horrible.

True...

But we even pointed out, what I thought were subtleties

horrible

I just can't get over how many things they've fucked up on this. I don't mind tweaks if they don't ruin the jersey. These ruin the jersey. You've summed up my feelings perfectly.

As for Liles, I thought that was a rather curious decision as well (along with having the older, better uniforms on display at the unveiling to show just how stupid the new ones look). Remember, though, that Liles was one of the players modeling the new Edge jerseys for reporters at the All-Star game. Perhaps that previous relationship with the evil bastards at Reebok was the reason he was picked.

Re: horrible

I'd argue it's just because the chicks dig him.

I can't wait to see Theodore in one of those new jerseys.

by Joe Dunman on Sep 13, 2007 10:31 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Perhaps...

Liles was chosen because RBK owns his soul, ala a deal with the devil.  Or maybe they used him for all the testing for the new Edge jerseys to prove that they made everybody 7% faster and that's why he's been injured so often the last couple of season....wait a minute...

THAT HAS TO BE IT!!!  I've figured it out!  Once again, it's all RBK's fault!  Bastards!!

Jibbles and Joe, I jumped to the exact same complaints as you did when I saw the jerseys.  I think that shows beyond a shadow of a doubt that there are some SERIOUS BASIC design flaws in the new jerseys.

Re: Perhaps...

Also, let's not forget that Reebok has somehow tricked us all into using the branding label "RBK", which isn't a word.  It doesn't even have vowels!

Liles

I bet Liles teammates forced him to do it because he's the dreamy one...

I WISH I COULD QUIT YOU

I think I am giving up hockey. Can we all just whine and b What about tradition OH MAN? It is right there in the middle of the jersey courtesy of the GIANT FREAKING AVS LOGO. I can't wait till the Avs change the uni's in 11 years and everyone screams bloody murder.

Re: I wish...

There's a difference between complaining just to complain and taking the time to describe exactly what it is that bothers you.  I think I did that.

But seriously, I'll scream bloody murder if it takes 11 years for the Avs to get rid of these horrible aesthetic atrocities.

Just saying if I wanted fashion comments and advice I would read fashion magazines, not hockey blogs and forums.

Since most of my post above disappeared when I posted that may have not been said, among many other insightful flame comments.

Re: I wish...

Good point, since team uniforms have nothing to do with hockey.  It's just fashion.

You have completely melted my face!

Seriously, though, I don't expect everybody to agree with me, so rest assured I understand where you're coming from to a certain extent.  I'm just a nerd for uniform design---can't help it.

Disappointed

I respect the points you make regarding these jerseys.  Why didn't management and or the team think consult the fans on this one.  I am certain that if they had they would have discovered we loved the old jerseys and these designs are balls.

by hertz32 on Sep 13, 2007 1:54 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Re: Disappointed

They didn't consult the fans because they know there are plenty out there who will dutifully buy up new jerseys no matter what they look like.  Just look at the Sabres.  They turned their logo into a complete joke and still managed to top the league in jersey sales last season.  People will buy just about anything, so why take the extra effort to design something great?

by Joe Dunman on Sep 13, 2007 2:40 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

follow on:

all of the remaining jerseys have been outed with the release of NHL '08, and there's a lot of ugly ones.  i don't know if this had already been released, but case in point: http://www.fartfignewton.com/rbk_edg...

so cheer up.  our uniforms are better than half the league at least.  i will say the stars new-old-school unis are pretty cool.

Re: follow on:

Yeah, Jibs posted a diary entry about the other jerseys.  Judging by what most of the teams have adopted as their new uniform designs, I'm not sure saying the Avs are better than half of them is all that much of a compliment.  To be honest, only maybe six or seven teams look better than they did before.

But that's just me.

by Joe Dunman on Sep 14, 2007 11:02 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not the best, but could be worse!

I'd have to agree that the organization didn't get this jersey quite right, but there are some aspects that I DO like, and it wouldn't take much to make these jersey's look pretty good.

I've seen some mock-ups where the piping only goes up the armpits, and then the same piping is added between the burgundy and blue down the arms (similar design to the Blue Jackets new jersey.)  Looks pretty nice, and only a minor tweak that could occur fairly quickly.

In fact, I'd bet on a number of teams changing jerseys in the next few years.

With regards to the piping: the apron look isn't necessarily the best, but at least they kept the trim from the old jerseys to do it, rather than using a single color.  Granted, the single color may have looked a bit better, but at least there's a touch of tradition, right?  :o)

But then, I've never been a great critic of anything, so I'm probably in a very small minority that isn't appalled by the new jerseys (and would wear one, if I had the extra cash to spare!)  I'll just hope that the Avs play pushes the jersey talk to the FAR back burner all season...
