Do the Avs need to go fishing?

With the injury to Super Joe and Captain Mullet Canada, should management do something to shore up the scoring heading into the playoffs?  If so, who's out there worth looking at?  We here at MileHighHockey want to hear from our faithful readers.  Who's out there that can step in to the team, either short-term or longer that will help the Avs turn around the recent struggles and get back into viable playoff contention?

Keep in mind that in the not-so-new-anymore NHL, the $$ has to work too.  I refer everybody to NHL Numbers for all the low-down on the cash situations.

Don't forget that Colorado will have to send something of value the other way in any potential trades.  Let's keep the "Vinny Lecavalier for Tyler Arneson" jibberish to a minimum.

So let's hear those well though out arguments on why the Avs should be looking a certian players, or if you're on the other side of the aisle, why the Avs should stay pat and weather the storm.

Sell, Sell, Sell

I have disgraced myself, I sold out
I have never, I repeat never, been in the lets go sign Forsberg camp but now its looking more and more attractive. We won't have to give up any players or picks and he should boost our powerplay.  "What?  A powerplay that scores? What a revolutionary idea!!!"

Or, we could trade Arnason, Liles, and all our draft picks for Jerome Igninla.  ( Just kidding, but attractive if only to screw the Flame-outs ).

The Forse

Forsberg coming back and saving this team from the brink of disaster would be the stuff of legend. Sadly, I think the more likely story would be he comes back, plays for a half dozen games or so, and then joins Sakic, Smyth, and Sauer on the IR.

Re: Foppa

I second this opinion.  Forsberg can not save the Avs.  They have to save themselves.

in lieu of trading for bryzgalov...

which we should have done, I think we should go for another similar situation -- too many good goalies in the same place.  that place is the NYR and the goalie is Al Montoya.  He could probably be had for just a rental player -- maybe Liles or Bruno.

Big-time good defensemen aren't nearly as easy to get, but if there's one out there that's attainable for anything short of Wolski and Stastny, I'm ok with that too.  But I doubt it's gonna happen.

Realistically, I think a trade for Montoya is possible.  We'd have to make the salaries work by exchanging spare parts -- possibly by including Malik from their end, who's a UFA at year's end.

Besides goalie and bigtime defensemen, I think the Avs are pretty close, and there's a lot of young forward talent moving up in the system (Hensick, Stewart).  If Sakic retires, we should make a big run at Hossa on the UFA market.

that's my 2 cents.  :)

Re: in lieu

Regardless of whether or not Sakic retires, I think they should make a big run at Hossa anyway.  And the Lightning are going to have to split up their big first line, too, so that should be a target as well.

The only problem

with acquiring any of the big three in Tampa is the cash:

Richards - $7.8 million
Vinny - ~$6.88 million
St. Louis - ~$5.25 million

and let's be honest, Marty is probably too small for the West, especially at 32 years of age, they'd be INSANE to let Vinny go for anything short of Crosby or Ovechkin, and Richards has underperformed BADLY since signing that contract.  Methinks there isn't much to be had there.

I gotta agree with some other

I think management should be taking a HARD look at Hossa right now.  He's 28, his asking price will likely be a a player like Liles or Svatos plus some picks.  He's risky as a rental, cuz I don't think he'll put the Avs on his back and carry them through the playoffs.

I don't know, maybe I talked myself out of it already.

Apparently

The hurricanes are thinking about making a trade for Liles at the deadline, i don't know who they send or how much truth is in this rumour but it was mentioned on the Denver Post website.

Who the Hell

would they send the other way?  This sounds like somebody closed thier eyes and picked an eastern conference team to start a rumor about...

We could

take a look at Halak in Montreal. He is one badass goalie. Besides; they already have Huet and Price.

Yeah, but

Huet is a UFA.  If Montreal was going to part with one of the three, I gotta believe it will be Huet.  They're sold on Price as the second coming of Roy, and allt he stuff I'm reading sounds like they think they'll have a Miller/Biron situation next year with Price and Halek at worst, if not a true tandem.
