Game 60: Red Wings 4, Avalanche 0
For a second I wondered if Ian Laperriere's crushing hit on Nicklas Lidstrom (and Lidstrom's subsequent exit due to injury) would spark the waning rivalry between the Avalanche and the Red Wings. But then I realized that you can't have a rivalry if one team never beats the other. After losing 4-0 last night, the Avs finished this season's series against Detroit with the same score: 4-0. Zero wins against a team they used to frustrate and infuriate on a regular basis just a few years ago.
The game last night was a sad, sorry affair, much like the season as a whole has started to become. The Red Wings went up 2-0 on two fairly lucky bounces and shots in the first period, but the Avs at least tied them for shots and seemed at least partially interested in playing hockey. After the first, though, it was all downhill. All the life drained out of the team and they coasted through the rest of regulation barely making an impact at all. They were outshot 40-18.
Of all the things to complain about, the worst incident during the whole game came during the first half of the second period, when Coach Q wouldn't stop running his mouth about something and got called for an "abuse of official" penalty. That wouldn't have been so bad if Ben Guite wasn't already in the box for a holding call. The subsequent 5-on-3 didn't last long, because Henrik Zetterberg buried a quick shot past Jose Theodore and effectively ended the game.
The third period started with a ridiculous scrum involving Lappy, Brett Lebda, Cody McLeod and Aaron Downey, with the only player not receiving a misconduct penalty being Lebda. Sure, it seemed like the bad blood was back between the Avs and the Wings, but really, the Wings got the best of it even if their captain has to sit out a few games. The Avs were completely embarrassed---in the fights and on the scoreboard.
The Avs have now lost four straight by a score of 12-3. Jose Theodore has done his best to minimize the damage, but he's gotten zero help on defense and the offense has packed it in for the season. Ryan Smyth has been completely useless since his return, and was totally invisible through almost the entire game last night. He played 17 minutes and had only one shot on goal.
It's time for a shakeup. The coaching staff needs to go and at least three or four players need to go. Honestly, I don't care who they are anymore. It's time to overhaul the team and get back on track, and quit waiting on the current setup to start winning games again. It's not going to do that.
This is just pathetic.

Pathetic effort for the 3rd game in a row
And Detroit was without arguably their top 3 defensemen for most of the game. Horrible effort by the Avs. The worst I have seen in years.
At least I had one personal highlight. I was in line in the restroom between the 2nd and 3rd periods. Three RW fans came in hootin and hollerin. I asked them if they had heard the bad news about Lidstrom, evidently selling myself as someone who actually cared. When they said no, what? I said "It looks pretty bad, probably out for the year." When they asked what it was: "Broken vagina." Lots of laughter and even some clapping by Av fans followed. It worked so well I told several other RW fans the news later.

Re: Pathetic
It was interesting that Draper was running his mouth so much last night. I bet the sight of an Avalanche player with an French "L" last name crushing a Red Wings teammate brought back all kinds of memories.
Also ironic that ...
the poster boy for boarding, Draper, committed a pretty obvious board of his own on Liles later in the 1st period. And then he seemed to be talking smack to Liles afterward. I hate that little s$#@! Not quite as much as Maltby or Chelios, but hate him nonetheless. I'd be all for another facial for Draper someday.

Draper
Draper has a LONG history of boarding people, both before and after his facial rearrangement.
My wife and I watched that Frozen In Time: Colorado Avalanche on NHLNetwork the other night, and she had me rewind and slo-mo that Lemieux hit on Draper over and over again. She loved it.
I don't want to show her how Maltby ruined Kamensky's career. That would make her really mad, and she already can't stand the vermin around here as it is.

Re: Draper
Are you trying to tell me that Kris Draper isn't the little helpless puppy that Detroit fans have coddled for more than a decade now? I just don't believe it!
Funniest story about Draper that I can think of..
A local candy company here signed Draper and his "domestic partner"* Darren McCarty to an endorsement deal for two new candy bars. At the press conference, they were asked what the difference was between their candy bars, and Draper said "his has nuts, mine doesn't."
Fitting.
- - There has been speculation that there was more to their relationship than just being close teammates and roommates. We're talking Wings fans doing this speculating, and this is before McCarty Sheldon Kennedyed his way out of the NHL.

Painful
Being the oblivious, ever-loving Avs cheerleader that I am, I usually can enjoy some of the worst Avs games. Last night was different. Being surrounded by thousands of loud RED jerseys only seemed to illuminate how glaringly horrible the game was. I am never embarrassed (see oblivious) by the Avs; I wear my jersey proudly, win or lose (and I like Clark). I was truly embarrassed last night. The long walk out of the Can with the roar of gloating Wings fans was painfully loooong. Call me slow, but I'm finally understanding the need for a major overhaul of this team/coach. They don't call me Rookie for nothing.
Re: Painful
I'd say they shouldn't allow Red Wings fan inside The Can, but that's the only way the Avs can sell out a game anymore.
There's anger in the land
"There's grievin' in the country
There's sorrow in the sand.
There's sobbin' in the shanty
And there's anger in the land."
Listening to The Fan while making dinner, I heard an "Avs News Update":
"The Red Wings are steamin' mad at Ian Laperriere for injuring Nicklas Lidstrom, one of their top players..."
heh.
