Game 64: Avalanche At Calgary, Preview And Open Thread

Hoo boy. What a day. The trade deadline has passed and the Avalanche are now the proud owners of Peter Forsberg, Adam Foote and Ruslan Salei. They are minus one Karlis Skrastins, definitely a third round pick in 2008, and maybe a first round and a fourth round pick as well. Only time (and Adam Foote) will tell on those.
I'm excited about the Skrastins trade because I was never excited about Skrastins. I don't know much about Ruslan Salei's exploits with the Panthers (seriously, the Panthers are still a team?) but I've heard good things, and everyone seems to agree that he's an improvement over Skratch. I'll gladly take that.
Forsberg, well, I'm glad he's back like I'm glad when my sick grandfather gets out of the hospital. It's good to see him again but there's a nagging feeling that he won't be around for very long. At least Foppa will only cost the Avs around $1 million and some pride if he goes down for good.
Footer, on the other hand, has some really strong upsides and some really strong downsides. First of all, his heart has always been in Denver, and he'll no doubt play as hard as his 36 year-old body will let him once he hits the ice in the Burgundy and Blue again. You know he'll give it his all, just like he has his entire career. His all might not be quite so dominant or intimidating as it once was, but he's still a top four d-man and the team can only benefit from having him on board.
Unfortunately, the possibility of losing future talent for waning talent is a trade-off any team should be reluctant to accept. The Avs will no doubt fill a bunch of seats upon their return to the Pepsi Center next week, but if Footer and Foppa don't lead them to the playoffs, the excitement could be short-lived. But enough doom and gloom. Welcome back, Adam Foote. No hard feelings for leaving.
It's been a long time since the Avs played my least favorite team, and it would be very sweet if they beat them tonight. The Calgary Flame-Outs are in first place in the Northwest and have been riding some really strong showings by Kipper. He's dominating the net again like he used to. His teammates have been playing well, too. Hopefully Foote, who's en route to Calgary as I type this, will help to shut down captain Jerome Iginla and his merry band of douche bags. And I'd love to see Footer crush Dion Phadouche just once.
No word on if Salei will be playing tonight, since the weather in Florida has been horrible and it's a loooong flight to western Canada from there. If he misses tonight, I'm sure he'll be at the Vancouver game tomorrow.
The game tonight starts at 7:00 PM Central time, 9:00 PM Eastern. You gotta know I won't be missing this one. See everybody here for a trip down memory lane.
ESPN preview.

Could be very interesting over the next 19 games.
I'm not too upset about losing some 1st round picks, Avs are horrible with their first rounders. We have always done better in the second round. Yes it will feel good to see Foppa and Footer back in the Burgundy, but I hope we get more than warm happy feelings.
Get Footer on that power play tonight! Can't hurt right?

Re: Could be
I think the Avs are so-so, not horrible. Wojtek Wolski was a first-round pick, and so was Chris Stewart. Kevin Shattenkirk is a good player, from everything I've read, so he's got to be considered, too.
Tanguay, Skoula and Robyn Regehr were all first-rounders, too, and they're all good NHL players.
I know there have been some huge flops, but that's true with every team. I think the Avs have a worse reputation than they deserve.

Nedorost
Buuuuuusssstttt! Probably the biggest for the avs. Talk about spending a 1st round pick for a 4th line grinder.
You think Skoula is good? I always disliked him when he was on the avs. Not as much as Skratch but he always seemed underachieving.

Re: Nedorost
Skoula has been dope---at times---for the Wild. He's not a bad player. No superstar, definitely, but his defensive skills fit right in with Minnesota's system. He played almost every game last season and he'll play almost every game this season.
I'd say Skoula should be considered a first round success story.

Now
Now that the trade excitement is past, I am back to reality. Q is wasting the talent on what should be a dominant team - and the avs need a damn good record to even make the playoffs.

Foote and Salei
I heard on the radio that Foote has a police escort from the airport to the arena. He won't be in the game until some time during the first period. I dont think I have ever heard anything so strange.
Salei is arriving in Montreal sometime tonight and is supposed to meet the team tomorrow in Vancouver.

Avs putting some great pressure on the Flame-Outs here. They're playing the puck control game they need to be playing.
Unfortunately it won't last long. The Avs will remember that they have the lead and they'll stop playing offense.

First period
The first period started good enough, with the Avs dominating the puck and getting a great goal by Ryan Smyth. But the second half was all Flame-Outs, and they got a goal for themselves.
Adam Foote's been on the ice, but it was a tough shift and Colorado had trouble clearing. Theodore's been solid.

I can't believe this
They are showing the 27 times Foote shut down Iginla. And sometimes Hannan.
Thats why we got Foote back. Hannan was billed as a Foote type player, has been only mediocre, so they go out and get the real thing.

hannan is playing
his best hockey in physical games it seems. He is also best as a man marker but Q doesn't do that. I think if Hannan is going to justify his salary, it will be in the playoffs which are tight and physical.

Re: BUT
yeah your right. That post wasn't to be negative about Hannan tonight. Hannan with Leopold and Foote with Sauer was...awesome. Just great. I was skeptical of the Foote trade but if these defensive pairings stay this good.....DAMN.
by InYoFace on Feb 26, 2008 9:57 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Not a bad game, overall
Foote seemed to fit in well, Liles was making some pretty sick breakout passes, guys named Wolski, Svatos, and Hejduk were taking some hits, but were also winning some battles late in the game, we had a Scott Parker sighting, and Cumiskey got an early start on his flight back to LE (I don't think he touched the ice in the 3rd).
Sakic seemed to be getting up to speed, the RPM line had some good chemistry as the game went on and they were SHOCKED!! still together. Theo did well, got a little help from the posts, but I'll call that good positioning.
On another note, I've been fairly neutral on the Flames' announcers being more excruciating than a root canal and have even managed to see some upside to Phadouche's style of play at times, but after tonight, I'm firmly in the "Flames Announcers Suck" and "Phadouche is the douchiest douche in Doucheville" camps.

But what about Smyth? Hejduk? Theodore? I mean, those guys played better than Liles/Stastny/Regehr.

YO YO YO blogging response on altitude
Anybody watching alititudes postgame?? Sandy Clough responded to the bloggers response to his attack on fans who think coach Q is failing.
I missed part of it since I was in the kitchen, but Sandy made a better defense of coach Q, but still not great. But I distinctly remember him saying something about credibility.
Hey Rookie, do you have tivo? I saw you had a good transcript from the last game of what was said exactly.

Interested
Interested to see what he said. Especially if he made actual good points. I'm tired of the "The Avs had injuries so Obviously Q gets a free pass" crap going around.

Re:Interested
I've always thought how you deal with injuries should be what determines your future as coach, not a ready made excuse. If you can keep a team in the playoff hunt with injuries (like the pens are doing) you're obviously doing a good job whereas losing games that should have been won even with injuries means you're doing pretty shithouse. I was not defending Q at all in this post just so everyone's clear, there's been about 5 or 6 games that we should have won lately and haven't and even before the injuries he was hopeless.

Re: YO YO YO
InYoFace, I don't have Tivo unfortunately. I do have Vista on my PC and can watch TV and/or record with it. That's how I transcribed the "you morons" thing. Course, last nights post game show didn't record so I didn't hear Clough's comment. Anyone else catch it?

This gets better
Phadouche had his truck stolen earlier in the day. Sucked in.

He can afford a new one.
Maybe next time he'll lock the doors.

What Would Phaneuf Drive?
So what would Phaneuf drive?
I am guessing he's one of those guys who go out and get a lift and big ass tires on his truck, but he would never take the truck on any kind of unpaved road, for fear of it getting dirty.

Re: Phaneuf
He drives (drove) a big, fat SUV. You know, for all that off-roading he does on the highway.

I'm sure he
Picks out much smaller vehicles, hits them from behind, and then leaves the scene before there are any altercations.
