Clutch

In a valiant effort to quantify something not quantifiable, USA Today has a widget to determine the 'clutch' players in this NHL season.
No surprise, Alex Ovechkin is tops among skaters. By a landslide. Mildly surprising is Lalime beating out names like Hasek and Brodeur on the goalie list.
Good news for Avs fans is Marek Svatos coming in 9th among skaters and Theodore coming in 8th among goalies.
The most telling thing about this table is the gaps between players. Ovechkin is head-and-shoulders above anybody else, and the netminders tend to group together at about a 10-point spread. I'm not sure what that means, but I'm sure some of you stats junkies can break it down for us.

Re: Dude
I'm thankful for his emergence as a goaltending force to be reckoned with, if for no other reason than it allows Pensblog to sell stuff like this.
God bless them.
Clutch
Clutch, in my mind, is the most ridiculously overblown thing in all of sports. I know I've used the word before, but I refuse to ever use it again. Clutch is intended as a compliment, but inherently it is an insult.
Seriously it implies that some people just work harder and play better when the game is on the line. That means they aren't working as hard or playing as hard the rest of the time, and that's not a good thing. The best you can do is give your best effort all the time.
"Clutch" is usually a measure of luck and overall skill. Ovechkin is a great player all the time. He also plays for a team that is average which means he has more "opportunities" to be clutch, such as close games. Svatos is the Avs top goal scorer, and has played in a extraordinarily high number of close games lately, of course he's going to score a lot of GWG's. Conklin has been playing well lately, but not late in games All the time.
