Game 77: Flames At Avalanche, Preview And Open Thread

Flames again.  Phadouche will be back in The Can, up to his usual dirty tricks, but this time with an able-to-fight Lappy no doubt itching for a good scrap with him.  Lappy fought in the Edmonton game for the first time in weeks now that his lacerated finger has healed, and he definitely had a good showing.  Let's hope he wastes little time wrecking the Flame-Outs defenseman.

Now, lets talk about line combinations for the 150 millionth time, shall we?  I know everybody is just dying to talk about them some more, so I don't have a choice.

Dater (who I owe some serious royalty checks to lately), says tonight's lines (at least for half of the first period) will appear as such:

Wolski-Sakic-Brunette
Smyth-Stastny-Hejduk
Forsberg-Arnason-Jones
McLeod-Guite-Laperriere

In his morning preview of tonight's game, Dater asked Coach Q about Wolski returning to the first line with Super Joe and Andrew Brunette.  Quenneville said:

Asked about his line-juggling for tonight and in general, Quenneville responded: "All the lines have played together at some point. (Wolski) has played the way we were hoping he'd play the last little while, and he earned an opportunity to be back with Joe and (Brunette)."

Okay, let's see.  First of all, saying "all the lines have played together at some point," doesn't say a lot, considering the vast multitude of combinations that have been employed this season.  Saying "all the lines have played together at some point" as evidence that there will be some kind of chemistry is beyond absurd.  Granted, the Sakic-Wolski-Brunette line has been reasonably successful (11 games, 7 goals, 13 assists), but it's not like they've played together for a while now, and I'm sure there's absolutely no pressure for Wolski's young shoulders to bear.  I'm sure he's gotten nothing but support from his coach.

As for the second half of Q's sentence, what the hell?  Wolski has "earned an opportunity to be back with Joe" and Brunette?  This bizarre merit system of "earning" spots on special lines with talented players is for the pee wees, not for professional players who have already established their specific techniques and playing styles.  You put guys on the same line who have complimentary temperaments and skill sets, not by who has the most gold stars for whatever arbitrary thing they did or didn't do a couple of games back.  This ridiculous system of punishment and reward has poisoned team chemistry all season, and now the players are even admitting it in interviews.

Wolski should have "earned" the spot on a line with Sakic and Brunette because he's got excellent puck control and skates well, and because that line combo has been the second-most consistent for the team all season, with a points-per-game average of 1.82.  This is not rocket science.

Luckily, the most-consistent line combination, the illustrious RPM Line of Paul Stastny, Ryan Smyth and Milan Hejduk, is finally back together.  Sure, it took a while, but thanks to Wolski "earning" the chance to play with Sakic and Brunette, that gives room for Ryan Smyth to return to the only line he seems capable of scoring on.

Finally, Peter Forsberg is expected to return, and this time he'll be down on the third line with Tyler Arnason and David Jones.  Sure, there's no reason for Arnason to ever play a game that isn't against Edmonton, but I'm sure he'll be just fine next to Foppa.  Right.  And poor Jones probably isn't even sure what city he's in right now, let alone who his linemates are.  Conceivably, being on the third line will cut down on Forsberg's excessive ice time, but that's yet to be seen.  I think it's worth noting that Peter The Great's average ice time over the four games he's played this season (20:16) is greater than his averages over the previous five years.  In 2002-03, when he scored 106 points and won the Hart Trophy, he only averaged 19:20, including PP work.  Now he's older, more injury-prone, and rusty as hell.  What is the logic again in playing him so much?

Speaking of older and more injury-prone, Adam Foote and his 90 year-old hip will not play tonight.  Rest up, Footer.  Don't rush it---we've seen what kind of mistake that can be, just ask Son of Stastny.

Oh yeah, the Flames.  I guess this game is kind of important, but at this point I'm not even sure I want the Avalanche to make the playoffs.  I mean, I always want them to make the playoffs and win the Cup, but I fear a first-round sweep at the hands of the Red Wings and a new contract for Coach Q are burdens the team probably doesn't need to bear.

The game starts tonight at 7:30 PM Mountain time, 9:30 Eastern.  I'll be here with bells on, but no pants.  Never any pants.

ESPN preview.

Those lines

look almost identical to the lineup I left in a comment of at Dater's blog.  I even explained Forsberg on the 3rd.  He's got the wrong Cody in there, IMO, but whatever.

I assume Theo's in net tonight?

Yep

Theodore back in goal in a half-decent coaching move (hopefully)

True, but Dater said Theo looked pretty bad in practice.  Hopefully he shakes off the cobwebs or whatever it is that's plaguing him.

I agree.

I assume that Q thinks he needs some added enforcement because of the Godard factor---except that McLeod can't fight.

Phaneuf still douche'n it up

I watched the Wild-Flames game the other day and Phaneuf is possibly getting worse.  Early in the first he skates in on Backstrom and gives him an obviously deliberate snow shower.  Boogard (or Fedoruk) then got in his face in the ensuing scrum but he managed to weasel away, come around back and grab Nick Schultz from behind.  What a tough guy.

Then of course Eric Godard has to fight Boogard to settle the score Phaneuf started.  And then shortly after Boogard beat up on Godard, Jim Vandermeer ended up taking on Chris Simon and got absolutely pummeled. So two guys ended up paying for Phaneuf's doucheyness.

Oh, and then he scores a friggin' highlight reel goal.  I think that's what pissed me off the most ;)

Re: Phaneuf

Let's hope Lappy goes straight for Phadouche and manages to avoid Godard or Simon.  Those guys are crazy, and Parker is still hurt.

Boogard and Lappy

Should take a page from Roy's son and just start throwing punches whether Phadouche wants to or not.

God that would be fun to see.

Re: Boogard and Lappy
Wow.  Part of me wants to condemn the crap out of that entire scene.  Yet part of me wants to embrace it ... if it would mean beating the tar out of tar-beating-worthy opponents such as Phadouche, Ott, practically any Red Wing, Bertuzzi, most other Ducks, etc.

Is Patrick ready to make the jump to NHL head coach yet?

by Bob in Boulder on Mar 24, 2008 12:33 PM MDT up reply actions

Wow

Roy Jr. sure can throw down. Damn, he wailed on that guy's ass, lol. So what if Roy told him to go fight? Nothing wrong with that. Coaches do that all the time. It's not like he told him to go and pummel that guy while he's down.

Re: Wow

Not that he wouldn't have.  Don't underestimate the cold ruthlessness of Patrick Roy.

Re: Boogard

I think it's pretty pathetic that Little Roy went after the other goalie.  Sure, it's entertaining, but it's about the most shameless, uncalled-for attack I've seen in a long time.

That kid (and he is a kid) didn't instigate or encourage the attack, and clearly didn't deserve a beat down.

Little Roy is a chump, if his behavior in this fight is indicative of his character as a whole.

by Joe Dunman on Mar 24, 2008 1:23 PM MDT up reply actions

Re: Roy jr

I agree that's pretty classless.

Why the hell did the refs throw down the kid in white who tried to protect his goalie? That made no sense to me

Re: Roy jr

I want to assume that they were just overwhelmed by the chaos and didn't really know what to do.

Or Saint Patrick has deep pockets (he does) and greased a few palms...

Better fighter, worse goalie

Lil' Roy's a better fighter than his old man. But a worse goalie, as his team was getting tuned up 7-1.

A douchey move by Lil' Roy, but by the same token, the other goalie had plenty of warning and should have been ready to fight. Even that midget Chris Osgood knew he had to fight, and held his own against Patrick when the time came to it.

Actually, this is just anything to avoid having to think, much less write about the losing streak.

Re: Better fighter

Actually, this is just anything to avoid having to think, much less write about the losing streak.

I have a feeling that, depending on how the game goes, this entire thread might end up being about anything and everything other than the actual game.

by Joe Dunman on Mar 24, 2008 3:02 PM MDT up reply actions

And, as one more aside...

...people never cease to amaze me. A few minutes ago there's a guy at work in the bathroom (presumably) taking a Bertuzzi. Stall door is closed, that's the big clue. Anyway, I hear a grunting noise from in there, which I immediately try to shut out - I figured he's "struggling" a bit, and I don't need to hear that, you know what I mean? But the noise keeps coming...and I realize that he is grunting, but he's grunting like he's saying "yeah," or "uh-huh." Then I hear this guy START TALKING - not loud or even at normal volume, but not at a whisper, either. And at that point I'm just thinking that this might be one of the Signs of the Apocalypse.

Seriously...what's so important that you've got to talk about it while you're taking a Chelios?

Quick question

Is anybody rooting for the Avs to tank?  Hoping Lacroix will get pissed, forcing normally mild-mannered Giguere to fire Q?  Or, play for the playoffs despite seeing a very likely first round exit by Detroit, Dallas, or San Jose (maybe Anaheim), and possibly keeping Q?

First Period

Hockey-wise, that was a pretty even period.  7 shots for Calgary, 6 for the Avs.

Physically, the Flames were getting away with all kinds of crap, and both teams look ready to brawl.  Lappy, McLeod and even Jones have been giving Iginla an earful all night long.

Keenan

is the dean of the fucking-with-your-goalie-for-no-apparent reason school of hockey coaching.

Does that mean Q's

the assistant dean/head boy(Whatever's just below him, they don't have deans in Australia so i wouldn't know. That plus i didn't go to University)

Calgary PP with a minute left

Sauer for hooking.

by andrew @ Mile High Hockey on Mar 24, 2008 9:58 PM MDT reply actions

Stupid

Sauer gets called for a minor, the Flames will finish the game on the power play.

55 seconds left---Calgary time out.

by Joe Dunman on Mar 24, 2008 9:58 PM MDT reply actions

And I don't like that call

Yes it is hooking, but when the opposing players tries to step over your stick and then high centers himself on it, you should get whistled.

Fake out

Dater said Theodore looked rotten in practice yesterday, but he looked freakin' superb tonight.

A huge shut out for him, and a huge win for the Avs.

He won't get one, but Ian Laperriere deserves a star for his tireless pestering.  The Flames were pissed and playing poorly at times.

The Avs stay in eighth place in a tie with Vancouver, who have played one less game (at least as of right now).

Stars of the Game:

  1. Jordan Leopold
  1. John-Michael Liles
  1. Jose Theodore

Re: Fake out

The mic died during the Theodore interview, so we don't get to hear any hockey cliches from him.

Oh well.  I'm out.  See you guys/gals in the recap tomorrow.

I thought it was his third?

One in Tampa Bay, this one,
and then one another (maybe it was just two, or maybe Budaj had one?)

Avs win one

They will maintain their lead over Nashville and Edmonton at least for another night.  They also tie Vancouver who plays Calgary tomorrow before coming to Denver on Wednesday.

by Americanario on Mar 24, 2008 10:03 PM MDT reply actions

Did you guys notice something?

There was absolutely NO line juggling tonight! With the exception of some lines being out due to players not being able to get off the ice, the lines stayed the same throughout! They were the RPM line, Sakic-Wolski-Brunette, Arnie-Foppa-Jones, and Guite-Lappy-McLeod. Unbelievable! I thought the day would never come! So, does this mean that not juggling lines is actually a good thing?? Who'd a thunk it?!

No way...

had to have been a fluke, and no it can not be a good thing.  Q is a Jack Adams candidate after all, he must know what he's doing.

by Americanario on Mar 24, 2008 10:17 PM MDT up reply actions

So

It was not an especially special game.  Really, the Avs decided to show up and play.  But I guess this makes it easier to write a more positive* game recap.

Nothing personal to anyone, really.  Phadouche sucks!  Our PP still sucks.  5-3 and no shots, please!!!  But whatever.  We won and are still, for now, in the race for the playoffs.  Go Avs!!!

I'm a fan, now matter how much it hurts.

They need to get rid of the instigator penalty

and bring more physicality back into the game. I'm not talking about all in brawls like the "Fight Night at the Joe" although that was cool and is good in big rivalries like the Avs/Wings at the time. I'm talking about crap where Phadouche starts cheapshotting people(especially star players) and you can't really do anything about it because of all these rules, plus the fact he's a little bitch,
