Game 67: Kings At Avalanche, Preview And Open Thread

Good lord this game is important.  First of all, the Canucks and the Avalanche are tied at 74 points, with Vancouver's superior win percentage giving them seventh place in the Western Conference and Colorado, eighth. Nashville, still stuck just outside the bubble, also has 74 points and faces Edmonton tonight---so it's critical that the Avs win.

Second of all, tonight Peter Forsberg will make his triumphant return to the Pepsi Center once again wearing the Burgundy and Blue (only in a more ugly, aprony form).  How much ice time he'll see and on which lines is yet to be determined, but it doesn't really matter.  The Can is going to be crazy the second he hits the ice.

Said Ian Laperriere upon learning that Foppa will be on the bench tonight:

"He's playing? It's great news. It's Christmas again."

To all the MHH members who will be at the game, know that I am jealous beyond description and I hate all of you.  In a good way.

The third reason this is a huge game is because it's my birthday, and one of the best presents I can imagine receiving is Forsberg scoring two goals and three assists and leading the Avs to a 6-0 win over the Canucks.

And what about those Canucks?  Says Dater:

The Canucks are a fraud, and Dave Nonis was outfoxed by everyone at the deadline, only getting a stiff named Matt Pettinger. They can’t score goals, and Luongo is good, but not invincible.

Nonis made a great trade getting Luongo for the gutless, wimpy, fraudulent, awful player named Todd Bertuzzi (Hey Bert, have fun signing your entire life savings over to Steve Moore in a couple years. Oh yes, trust me, it’s coming, "dude"). But he hasn’t addressed Vancouver’s woeful offensive issues since and they are going to fall apart before long.

Hot damn.  That's some good stuff right there.

The game starts at 7:30 PM Mountain time, 9:30 PM Eastern.  I have no doubt that everyone will be watching this tonight, so if you're not sitting in The Can, you had better be sitting in front of a computer contributing to this game thread.  Word.

ESPN preview.

Your birthday?

Well, why didn't you say so.  I get to go to a lot of games ..... lol, who am I kidding, I wouldn't give this ticket to my brother if it was his birthday.

Maybe I'll make a sign that says "Happy Birthday Joe!  But You're Not Here!"

But then you will have random people coming up to you asking, "I didn't know today was Joe Sakic's birthday! Plus, what do you mean he's not here?  He is on the ice right now."

Dater's right

The Canucks are idiots. They did NOTHING at the FA signings and they did NOTHING at the deadline! They don't even deserve to be in the playoffs with such bonehead management.

I sooooo want to go

I wanted to go to this game, but instead I'm going to the Ducks game on Thursday. Do you think there will still be some buzz left for Foppa's 2nd game home?

This sucks, I really wanted to go to this game :( And now instead of going, I have to go to my economics college class and miss the first period of the game on tv too! >:(

Re: I sooooo want to go
Same here, but I am going to the Duck game Thu AND the Stars game Sat.   Both will be huge, just not of the same hugeness as tonight.    Put Scott Parker on Foppa's line and if anyone so much as breathes in his direction they should be pummeled.

In the ESPN article about Foppa playing

Was this little tidbit regarding his ice time:

"Quenneville will let Forsberg's productivity on the ice dictate his playing time."

Uh.

Like he does with everybody else?

Re: In the ESPN article...

Yeah, I noticed that too, but my first thought was, "how does one produce without playing time, since playing time must be earned through productivity?"

Is this a chicken and egg kind of situation?

Cumiskey Confidence

In preparation to play tonight, I can only hope that Cumiskey has overcome the blow to his confidence he suffered last Sunday at the Avalanche Charity Brunch where he was forced to appear before a crowd in this:

Pretty sure he was possibly drunk

Where does AD's sudden spunk come from after 13 years of boring, non-enterprising plain-old-vanilla coverage? I mean, I know he's had the occasional outburst before (the ill-advised ESPN rip job) and, yeah, sometimes (OK, very often) maybe (definitely) he's not the most knowledgeable hockey observer (ripping Derek Morris when James Mirtle presents proof to the contrary)...but that blog post was just downright spunky! I may to leave the game thread early

While in here on the 'puter, the lovely Mrs. asked (while watching the Oil-Preds game) "Is that MARTY Reasoner?"

"Yeah, I think so."

"How long has he been an Oiler?"

"A while, I think."

"Huh.  I only remember him as a Blue."

Here's his hockey db.

So yeah, we may be making a little @ MHH later.  How can you beat that?  She KNEW an obscure hockey player's history for a team she cares nothing about.  She may be the perfect woman.

On the other hand, she's gloating that the Preds are up 2-0 REALLY early even though that hurts the Avs.  She's a Preds fan, but it may be difficult to look at her.

Now she's starting the "Let's go Pred-a-tors" crap in the living room.  I may have to leave early for an entirely different reason: ie. to bury the body...

First period

A lot of fight from the Avs early, with Paul Stastny scoring the lone goal so far.  Forsberg has looked solid, and has made some good plays.  He's skating slower than I remember him skating, but I suppose that's no surprise really.

Sakic is back in business.  It's pretty clear now that his weak play early in the season was due to his as-yet-undiagnosed hernia injury.  He's still got lots of jump left in him.

I agree.

At this point, the Altitude guys should stop saying "Arnason takes the draw for the Avs" and just say "Arnason looses the draw for the Avs."

PP failure

The 'Nucks announcers are noting that the Avs' power play units never take shots from the point.  They are blaming that for the overall failure on the PP.

I think we've been saying that all year.

Sakic had a chance but shot it wide.

I just cannot believe my eyes.  Normally, no one is on the point to keep the puck in.  Guys march over our blue line like they are singing "the ants go marching". Passes never connect, Theodore allows simple goals, and Q goes out for another drink while Granato fights his battles.

Now, pucks are finding the net.  The point is covered .Theo actually looks like a goal tender - oops maybe not

Looks like I missed a whole crapload of fun. I had college :'(

OK, Joe, you SO totally have to put that cat hi-fiving in the game thread as a symbol of a PP goal. That cat is just too damn sick!

Foppa played pretty well I think, I caught some highlights and it seems he was out there hitting/punching people, ahhh good old Foppa!

It looks like Theodore had the pimp-cane out tonight, a good thing too, this was a must-win.

I'm so happy we won! :D
