Game 68: Ducks At Avalanche, Preview And Open Thread

It's tough to play in the Northwest Division.  The top four teams, Minnesota, Calgary, Colorado and Vancouver are all within five points of each other, and there is still a possibility that all four could make the playoffs.  But the Northwest isn't the most intimidating division in the NHL.  That honor goes to the Pacific.

The Anaheim Ducks, the defending Stanley Cup champions, come into the Pepsi Center tonight in third place in the Pacific Division.  That's third place having won eight games of their last ten.  That's third place with 83 points, seven more than the Avalanche, who are in third place in the Northwest.  Though the Ducks don't score goals like Detroit or Dallas, their offense has gotten a burst of energy from the return of Teemu Selanne, and they've only lost once with him back in the lineup.  They play an extremely physical game, by far the most penalized team in the NHL, with 1315 total penalty minutes---even ahead of the Broad Street Bullies, the most suspended team in the league.  The Ducks have a nasty pest in Corey Perry.  They have an intimidating heavyweight enforcer in George Parros.  They have solid netminding and one of the strongest defensive corps in the league.

In other words, Anaheim is still a definite contender for the Cup.

The Avalanche have beefed up as of late, but questions still surround them.  Sure, they're in seventh place in the Western Conference right now, but can they keep it?  Can they hold off Vancouver, Nashville and Phoenix long enough for the season to run out?  Can Peter Forsberg stay healthy, and even if he does, can he contribute to the offense, which has far underperformed compared to last season?  Can Jose Theodore keep playing well?  Can Adam Foote stop hooking people, or at least getting called for hooking?

But for all those doubtful, it-could-go-bad-at-any-second questions, there's another one that lingers even more ominous: can the Avalanche win the Northwest Division with 15 games left to play?  The remaining schedule is packed to the brim with games against Edmonton, Calgary and Minnesota.  Win against those teams and the Avalanche could be hanging at least one more banner from the Pepsi Center rafters come April.

The magic number for this season has been estimated to be 94 points.  The Avs are just 18 points away, meaning they need to win nine games out of 15.  Or the point equivalent of nine wins, which could be seven wins and four overtime losses, for example.  However, if the Avs lose to the wrong teams (especially Vancouver), their hopes of a return to the postseason could be dashed anyway.

It's all up in the air right now, just like it was last season.  Last year the Avs went 15-2-2 over the last 19 games and missed the playoffs with 95 points.  This year they've begun the last 19 games 4-0-0.  Could they repeat the streak?  If they did, would it still not matter in the end?

My head's about to explode.

The game tonight starts at 7:00 PM Mountain time, 9:00 PM Eastern.  Jeff Finger could be back in the lineup, but he's the seventh defenseman, so who would sit is unknown.  Jose Theodore will be back in net.  And you can bet Scott Parker will be playing his customary five minutes.  See you here for the thread.

ESPN preview.

I propose that McLeod

take some lessons from Mr. Perry.  If he's what you'd call a pest with 29 goals and 25 assists, then McLeod doesn't even come CLOSE to pest status.

What I'm saying is, I have Perry on my fantasy team, and along with his points, his PIM's win me tons of games.

I shant be attending the game thread this evening as I have pickup tonight.  I need the practice.

Plenty of cheering and booing tonight at the Can

I get to go to the game tonight.  Funny, when I was at the game Tuesday, I made a comment about how it was funny that there was actually a player in that game that elicited cheers every time he had the puck (my man-crush, Foppa), which was a pleasant departure from having a player on the ice who elicits boos every time he touches the puck.  Well, tonight we get both!  Bertuzzi still deservedly gets boos showered upon him in the Can, and I hope the fans are merciless tonight.  I still can't stand the a-hole.  He is what he is.

A bit of a threadjack...

...but speaking of our "fans," we really deserve the team we're getting on the ice. Our fans, in general, suck, and display very little knowledge or passion about the game. HOW CAN YOU NOT SELL OUT FORSBERG'S RETURN?

It was just plain stupid to keep booing Jack Johnson the other night - it was a great hit. Although at the time maybe the fans at the game couldn't have seen the play that clearly - don't know if it was replayed. Anyway, that was dumb, made us look like a bunch of ignoramouses.

And instead of the half-assed boos for Bertuzzi, how about some cheers for the good guys - spontaneous cheers, not the kind from the scoreboard that we respond to like a bunch of hypnotized muppets.

Saw that Chicago has a shot at next year's Snow Game. Good for them, a city with real hockey tradition and great fans who've spent the past 20 years getting the crap kicked out of them by their evil owner, Mr. Burns. Anywhere but here, because all it would do is feed into the false notion that this is a hockey town in any shape or form, when it's clearly not.

And if Parker plays 5 minutes, that would surpass the 3 and 2 he's played in the last 2 games. And really...what does Parker v. Parros do? Look, I love fighting in the NHL, I really do. I check out Fried Chicken and hockeyfights.com and I love the fight clips and the chatter about who's the best now adn the best ever...but Parker/Parros does nothing to solve the overall toughness deficit. It's about team toughness. It's about Cody McCormick knocking Kessler on his ass, it's about Footie and Rusty (ugh) and Fingie (double ugh) erasing a guy in the corner, it's about Hannan making life hell for the guy in front of the net (no, wait...it's not about that). The thing is that Parker won't be able to do anything to deter Anaheim's physical play because he'll only play limited time when Parros is on the ice. Period. You need a guy like David Clarkson (Devils reference, gonna throw up in my mouth!) who can actually play and deter. Lappy and the Codys are the closest we come to that except that Cody McM is (still) hurt and Cody McL can't fight.

(Man I'm in a bad mood. There's gonna be plenty of yelling at the TV tonight. Bob, take me to the game with you so I can some aggression out, please.)

by Dan Winkler on Mar 6, 2008 3:27 PM MST up reply actions

I too couldn't believe

that it wasn't a sellout Tuesday night.  It was a good crowd, but not a sellout?  Not only was it Forsberg's return, but a big game against a division rival too!  I have been one of the first to defend Denver as a hockey town.  But man, that was disappointing.  As it is also super disappointing to see so many Winged Wheels in the crowd when Detroit comes in, and also to hear their "Lets go Red Wings" chant in the Can and be one of about 4 people that tries to drown out "Red Wings" with "Av-a-lanche."  That really blows.

I don't know what the deal is.  Too many transplants?  Too many wine and cheesers there to be seen and not really passionate about hockey?  I don't know.  But sadly, I agree with your post, Dan.

And I would take you to the game, but my wife is suddenly a huge fan again now that Forsberg is back.  But Roy knows that you and I would raise the hockey IQ in the stands.

by Bob in Boulder on Mar 6, 2008 3:54 PM MST up reply actions

I was surprised

to see that the game wasn't a sellout, because when I checked for tickets, it said they wern't availiable anymore. I don't know what happened. The first game back for Foote was a sellout though, and I was at that one. There are a lot more chants than you would think at the games. I thought the atmosphere was pretty good.

by Rather Dashing on Mar 6, 2008 4:09 PM MST up reply actions

Disagree

I completely disagree with you that Avs fans are terrible. I felt that maybe the game against the Canucks were full of a lot more bandwagon fans than normal. (because of Forsberg).

And we've gone over not selling out before, the Avs have the second highest ticket prices in the league, and are raising them again. I don't blame fans, in a bad economy, for not spending dough on tickets when management overprices them. Not selling out Forsberg's return isn't only a reflection on the fans, but it is on management as well. Other indicators of fan support, like merchandise, TV ratings, and general buzz around town, are significantly up. When the economy was booming ticket prices could be high because demand is up. Now that it's down, but ticket prices have still increased as if it hasn't, prices have to come down to accommodates. An unpacked house, to me, reflects much more poorly on the Avs organization than it does on the fans. With those high ticket prices the onyl ones who could really get tickets in the relatively short notice (a week or so) are the people who can blow $150-$200 on tickets. The real fans who can already afford that are buying tickets anyways (they probably already had tickets to that game) so the fillers were more wealthy bandwagon fans. sure some die-hards joined in (like some people on this site) but I bet there were a lot of people trying to get back in on the hot ticket in town, who didn't even know Brisbois and Konawalchuk were ever on the avs at all.

Booing Jack Johnson was a little bad, but that would happen anywhere. It was a clean hit, but it was violent, and the hit looked even worse because of the way Smuyth hit the boards. At first glance it looked especially bad, and he hurt a star player. That's going to draw boos from anyone.

Using Chicago is a great example. They didn't support their team because of poor management for years. Now that that's changed they are coming out in droves. They are a savvy fan base, and the Avs (and yes Red Wings) have mimicked that.

Cody McL can't fight, but don't worry he'll do his best to take out the smallest Ducks player on the ice. Maybe he can mix it up with Sammy Pahlsson.

by Jibblescribbits on Mar 6, 2008 4:12 PM MST up reply actions

Actually...

...Hannan already called dibs on Todd Marchant - he owns him! And Sammy Pahlsson (part of the Ray Bourque trade, by the way) might beat Cody McL in a fight.

You're right about the Johnson booing, I see it all the time in other sports. I had second thoughts after I wrote that. Fans at the games don't have the advantage of the replay, plus they can get caught up in the emotion, and maybe especially so in Denver since there's so little true emotion at the Can.

Agree about the organization's responsibility in killing some of the atmosphere, but the empty seats aren't the really expensive ones, they're in the upper reaches that cost less than $40/game.

But...with all due respect...I've been a season-ticket holder, in one form or another, since 1995. Second row of the upper level directly behind the attack-twice goal cost $15 at Big Mac. Saw the first game (where the Avs/Wings rivalry truly began when Lapointe shredded Uwe Krupp's knee) and many others since...and our fans suck. Suck, suck, suck. This always has been and always will be a Broncos town, plain and simple. After that, we love the Stock Show. Then the Rockies. Then the Avs.

Not to say that the individual fans suck, because they don't, and the blogs demonstrate that - it's surprised me how many great, smart individual fans we've got, and that doesn't come close to covering all our smart fans because there are probably thousands who don't post on the blogs.

But the games don't really mean much for the crowd, you know? We're sheep, incapable of generating our own buzz. We're there more for the spectacle than the game. We get more excited when they throw t-shirts into the crowd than when we make a great play on the ice. We show up when we're winning and don't when we're losing. A guy like Bob who goes alot and knows the usher's name and cares like crazy and who screams smart and funny and rude things during the game gets looked at sometimes like he's growing a third eye. "Fans" often walk right in front of us during the game to go buy another overpriced beer or whatever. Many "fans" leave early, even when it's still a close game. And the "fans" don't stick around to see who the 3 stars are and to mock the choices made by whatever media moron who botched the picks that particular night.

Thing is, we're not so different than most other fans. You could lump the Stars and Wings fans in here, too. They're no better or worse than we are. (Great fans in the world - Cardinals baseball fans...Chiefs football fans...some others that I can't think of right now.)

by Dan Winkler on Mar 6, 2008 4:49 PM MST up reply actions

Rockies?

Heh, no one cared about the Rox until last year. There is no way they were behind the Avs. It has always been Broncos, Avs.

I have only been to hockey games in San Jose, Columbus and Colorado, but I see little difference in the fans in either place. New arenas suck the life out of fans by playing overplayed, too loud music during places where buzz should be filling. That's all fans, in all sports. I've seen football games in Indy, Cincy, and Denver, and Baseball games at Wrigley, SF, Oakland, and Mile High and Invesco. new stadiums are designed like the Best Buys, and shopping centers of the world, to be as discrete and familiar as possible, sucking all life out of everything.

But yeah there are bad fans, but I've seen plenty of good ones too. I think you'd find the same thing anywhere you go these days

by Jibblescribbits on Mar 6, 2008 4:59 PM MST up reply actions

In defense of the Rockies

we can venture back to Chicago for a decent comparison. Blackhawks fans are coming out now that the Hawks are showing a newfound commitment to winning, and not just wandering aimlessly at the bottom of the standings every year. The Rockies fans were similar in that the fans were still there, but they refused to try and support a team that wasn't doing what they could to win. The Rockies management was very poor to the point that it drove fans away. Remember, this team set insane attendance records and the fans even put up with losing until it became very obvious that they were completely clueless. Once the Rockies showed a little fight, they were back. I honestly can't believe Coors Field was full of bandwagon fans with the intense electricity surrounding those games at the end.

In my mind, Denver will always be a Broncos town, but I don't think there's much of a gap between the Avs and Rox anymore (provided the Rockies maintain themselves at a competitive level for the next few years).

by SlamDunkTheFunk on Mar 6, 2008 5:20 PM MST up reply actions

Agree

I'm not a baseball fan, but The Rox only had a couple good seasons before management really did them in.

Nonetheless i don't think there's any arguing that the Avs are more popular on the whole

by Jibblescribbits on Mar 6, 2008 10:24 PM MST up reply actions

you are an angry man!

i was at the game Tuesday...the arena was almost full, but for a few group ticket sections (so it appeared, at least) in the upper deck.  It was pretty close -- a lot of arenas would play number games to sell that last tickets just before game time for pennies to call it sold out.

the crowd was great that night too, lots of energy.

And I'm glad they booed JJ -- what did you want them to do?  Cheer him?  Let him go on his merry way for going out of his way to hurt a top player of ours?  Even if the hit was totally clean (which im not convinced of, see below), it's ok for fans to get worked up about a top player getting hurt.  In fact, i think it's good.

I'm not totally convinced of the cleanness of that hit either -- I find it hard to believe JJ couldn't have seen he was going to hit Smyth at a bad time in a bad place.  The timing and ice position of a hit matters -- boarding is entirely a position/timing based penalty, and Lemeiux's hit on Draper (which we all agree was dirty) wasn't especially bad if you think about it -- just a little late at a bad spot on the benches.  go look!

I'm not equating those 2 plays by any means, but the principal is still true:  hits can be legal or only slightly illegal and be dirty for the fact that they show callous disregard for another player's safety.  While the hit was certainly legal, it was dirty.  I'm ok with booing dirty hitters, in fact, I hope we would.

Thread Successfully Hijacked

While I agree the Can has quieted in the last few seasons, I do not agree that Denver doesn't care about the Avs.  I would  say Broncos first, Avs second, although this town is not very happy with the Broncos.  Why would you be?

I think we are all just bitter that Red Wings fans have penetrated our defenses and become louder than us.  Having been at the last game, I left early for the first time ever, I couldn't handle it, all of the life was sucked out of the Can.  It was awful.

Avs fans rock when the team really gives us something to cheer for.  When they don't, it's downright painful to watch.

Just wait, it's all coming back.  The Can will rock again.

Do the Avs now just sit back and let Anaheim take it to them?  Will they try to preserve a tiny one-goal lead by dropping back and refusing to play offense?

God I hope not.

Puck drops, Arnason kicked out of the circle, Avs lose the faceoff anyway.

To somewhat continue the hijacked thread, I just had a thought.  In the hockey of yore, goals were scored in spades by both teams.  In the "new" NHL, there are a lot less goals to cheer at, Ovechkin not withstanding.

I Don't Think So

Arny is a superstar in waiting - face-offs, no.

Beautiful plays, awesome hockey sense - yes.

Played with the right line, which of course Q has no idea what that means, he is dangerous.

by texacogirl on Mar 6, 2008 9:49 PM MST up reply actions

Re: I don't...

He has good puckhandling but he is so inconsistent.  Last year, he went on a tear during the streak.  He was also playing well centering a line with Svatos and Wolski while everyone was injured.  He can't seem to keep that pace though.  I think he has kind of underachieved throughout his career.

by InYoFace on Mar 6, 2008 9:56 PM MST up reply actions

Re: I Don't Think So

You know, I used to think that Arnason had "superstar in waiting" qualities, but not any more.  Q's missteps aside, Arnason is just not consistent enough, and appears not to work hard enough often enough, to be anything more than a third-line center.  Every once in a while he'll show a flash of brilliance, but so will Ben Guite, and he's definitely no superstar.

I'm over Arnason.  I used to be a big fan, especially late last season, but he just doesn't have that extra fire that superstars exhibit.

Arnason was not a superstar in Chicago, nor in Ottawa, and his 49 points in 82 games last season (and his worse pace this year) indicates that he'll never be one in Colorado, either.  He's had four different coaches (Brian Sutter, Trent Yawney, Bryan Murray and Joel Quenneville) and he wasn't amazing under any of them.

Well played, Fingie!

That was a great 1-0 game, pretty good tempo, good hitting, tense to the end.

How nice is it to have Fingie back so you can limit Hannan's liability to just 16 minutes of ice time? Still, that's an expensive 5-6 d-man, but what can you do now?

The TV guys said Sauer played well, I agree, but I would have given Fingie a star - he snuffed Bertuzzi twice late in the game and didn't miss a beat.

Little worried about Foote, though...

by Dan Winkler on Mar 6, 2008 10:03 PM MST reply actions

That's Weight, you genius

Haynes kept calling Doug Weight "Kapanen," until there were about 11 minutes left in the 3rd. He didn't specify if it was Niko or Sami, neither of whom, you know, actually plays for the Ducks (although Niko wears #39, just like Weight).

Look out, Arnason, you're next!

Wow!

I was at the game tonight, man it was awesome!!! I'm so happy we won!! When Wolski scored the place just erupted, it was so loud, I've only been to the home opener this season, and it was louder yesterday. And yeah, my friend and I were fully into the "Let's go Avalanche" chant.

btw, Jose Theodore definitely had the pimp-cane out tonight, even though I was in the nosebleeds, the cane was clearly visible xD

This is kind of ironic, I'm the one who first showed you guys the "pimp cane" photo, but now I can't find the large version (RMN probably archived it, but I can't find it still). Did anyone by chance save the large one? Didn't you want to photoshop it Joe, maybe you still have it?
