WCQ Game 1: Avalanche 3, Wild 2 (OT)

Joe Sakic. Great clutch player, or the greatest clutch player?
After his team blew a two-goal lead in the third period, captain and patron saint Super Joe scored eleven minutes into overtime to lead the Colorado Avalanche to a huge win over the Wild in the first round, 3-2.
The goal, a backhand garbage shot, was the eighth playoff overtime goal of his career and extended his league record. When you're on a list ahead of guys like Maurice Richard and Glenn Anderson, you know you're the clutchest mofo on the planet. Chris who?
But Super Joe's heroics wouldn't have been necessary had the Avs held on to the lead they established in the second period. Kurt Sauer got things started with a tip in from the slot with help from Sakic and Wojtek "Suck My Ass, Q" Wolski just a minute and a half into the middle frame. Sauer's celebration was less surprise and more "how you like them apples?" Priceless.
Ryan Smyth followed in the second half, with a power play goal at 13:08. A power play goal? Why yes. In fact, the Avs killed no kittens at all last night because they scored on the only power play they had.
Let's be honest here. Officiating is a tough job, and mistakes are bound to be made. Complaining about bad calls as an excuse for why your team won/lost/died on the ice is never worth the effort, and indicative of a weak constitution. But, all that said, the officials last night were so unbelievably biased it defies belief. Brent Burns took run after run at Peter Forsberg, Jose Theodore took a blatant knee to the head, and Mikko Koivu decided to cuddle with Theo for a good ten seconds after being pushed on top of him during the second period. The refs called none of it. In the first period, Andrew Brunette put a legal, standing hit on Eric Belanger and he got called for boarding. Belanger didn't even fall down. It was ridiculous all night long.
But, like I said, complaining about the refs is like complaining about the weather. What difference will it make?
If there was just one totally warranted penalty call, it was on Scott Hannan in the third period when he elbowed the living crap out of James Sheppard along the near boards during a scramble for the puck. The Wild went on the power play and promptly scored the tying goal.
Don't think that Jose Theodore's weak third period meant he had a bad game, though. He had a really good game, and made some huge key saves. He stopped all eleven shots he faced in the first period and was money in overtime. He had 28 total saves on 30 shots and finished with a save percentage of .933. That's pretty damn good, but I'm sure he would have preferred a shutout. I think we all would have.

The Avs defense was pretty good most of the game, with great shutdown efforts by Jeff Finger, Kurt Sauer and even Scott Hannan. Finger took a huge hit from Derek Boogaard (who had an inconceivable nine minutes of ice time) at one point but hopped right back up. The Avs were out-hit 25-18, but Ben Guite and Ruslan Salei both had three apiece to lead the team.
One of Salei's hits was on Mark Parrish near the team benches during the second period. The hit was shoulder-to-shoulder, but Parrish lost his balance and ran out of room and crashed hard into the boards. He was sprawled out on the ice for several minutes before walking with assistance to the locker room. It was later reported that he suffered a head injury and he didn't return. I know I speak for everybody at MHH when I say I hope he recovers quickly. Parrish is a classy guy and nobody wanted to see him get hurt.
Overall, this was one of the best hockey games I've seen in a really long time. Huge swings in momentum, great shots on goal, great saves by both goalies, some hard hits and post-whistle scrums, and all around amazing play at times by both the Avs and the Wild.
If game 1 was any indication of the series as a whole, we're all in for a hell of a ride.
And I would be totally remiss if I didn't thank all the MHH members who participated in the most epic game thread of all time. Way over 400 total comments, including some from a very civilized Wild fan who stopped by for a while until the Avs started scoring in the second period. You're welcome back any time, sir. All in all, truly impressive posting effort by all involved. I'm pretty sure the Avs wouldn't have won without us.
Stars of the Game:*
- Jose Theodore (28sv, .933)
- Brian Rolston (0g, 1a)
- Todd Fedoruk (1g, 0a)
*Whoever decided the stars of the game should be shot. How do you not list Joe Sakic, who had the game-winning overtime goal and an assist? How do you list two players from the losing team? I smell some serious homerism...

My favorite whipping boy and a big concern of mine played much better last night. Yes, Tyler Arnason showed good hustle and even went in the corners and made some body contact. His game wasn't perfect, but much better. Alot of that had to do with Smyth, yes, but it was a relief to see Arny hustle.
Finger played far better than in the last game that I ripped him in. He deserved to be ripped last game and deserves praise for this game.
The defense played extremely well across the board. I didn't notice Liles very much, but that is ok.
My only concern was how the team started to sit back, just a tiny bit, with the lead. Even so, the Wild were fortunate to get to OT.

Re: Credit
I think the first two periods of the game were Tyler Arnason's worst of the season. But in the third he started to pick it up and show some fight. He took some shots on goal and was good along the boards.
Now if he'd just show that much effort all the time, we'd have three strong lines.
And yeah, I noticed the Avs coasting early in the third period, but it's okay. There are no charity points in the playoffs, so I don't care if every game goes to OT as long as the Avs win.
I agree with Joe
I thought Arny put in about 33% of that game, all of it late. Refer to one of my posts in the game thread during the second period (I think), where he went into the corner after Smyth had already set up shop there and Jones was positioned behind the net. A few things about that play:
- How many offenses in the NHL score goals with all 3 forwards below the goaline? Answer: NONE!
- Arny was the last man in the offensive zone, and I think we all know it wasn't because he was being defensively responsible and had to hustle into the play...
- He didn't got to the front of the net or the slot (which would make sense) because he doesn't want to pay the price. Richardson would have got to the front of the net. Stewart would have gone to the front of the net. I be Hlinka would have gone to the front of the net. Hell, PARKER probably would have gone to the front of the net. Arny is soft. That last thing the Avs need in a series against the Wild is soft players.
My thoughts
See above for my diatribe on Arny.
I thought Theo played a REALLY solid game. He stood on his head in the first two periods, especially the parade to the penalty box in the first. The first goal was a deflection off of Finger's skate on a centering pass when everybody was in the correct position. They call those lucky bounces. He was visable pissed at Finger after the goal, and I don't blame him. The second goal, on the PK, Sauer inexplicably chased the high guy high into the slot and left Fedoruk (sp?) along in front of the crease. The only thing Theo did wrong on that play was that he didn't immediately get up and castrate Sauer for the boneheaded play, IMO.
The officiating was BRUTAL. The only penalties that were legit were SoS's delay of game and Hannan's attempt to elbow a guy that was 3 feet taller than him. The boarding call in the first was a love tap, I though Hannan got position on Rolston and took him down fairly legally, and Sauer's 'hold' was borderline. I can live with that one, though. The really troubling stuff wasn't called all night. Apparently, vicious cross-checks against oppossing forwards who haven't touched the puck are COMPLETELY legal in the NHL postseason. I bet Jones has 'WARRIOR' permenantly embedded in his back... Also, the non-call on punk bitch Gaborik's knee to Theo's head really pissed me off, along with Burns' cheap shots at Foppa's ankles. If this guy has a problem with how Lappy handled Gaborik in the last regular season game, then I better see some outcry over the treatment Forsberg got last night. Somehow, I doubt that happens.
All in all, not a bad game. After the first, I thought the Avs dominated play for the most part. Hannan's 'tard penalty in the 3rd not withstanding, the defense and PK did well. lowayne, you may not have noticed Liles much, but he started MANY a quality breakout. He can skate circles around a good percentage of the Wild's forecheckers, and with the style of neutral zone defense they employ, that gives him the time and space he needs to carry the puck deep or make a good first pass. I'm pretty sure the Altiboobs were ready to propose to him last night, but I agree with them for once. He had a strong, quiet game.
Nobody should overlook Wolski's contribution to last night either. The GW goal was all him. He also singlehandedly won three or four battles in a row along the near boards at one point and forced the puck deep in the Wild's zone while the rest of his team changed. He had a strong game and 2 assists. He was hitting well and caused a good many of Minny's 8 giveaways. Hopefully, he breaks out in the playoffs.
SoS had a little trouble adjusting to the pace, but he also had a strong game. Hejduk made some good plays, but went silent for stretches too. Still, both of those guys had a pretty good night defensively (accept for SoS's one or two gaffs) so that element of thier games was a plus. Bruno was pretty quite last night and he along with Arny seemed to have trouble finishing anything (checks, opportunities, etc.).
Liles, Arny
I was refering Liles about to his defense. I 100% agree on his transition game and DID notice that.
About Arnason. I still think he needs to play much better - don't get me wrong! I was just commenting that he at least took a step in the right direction by actually making a hit or two. Clearly, Smyth's play had something to do with it. Smyth was unfreaking real all game long.
by Hardshell_Taco_del_Lowayne on Apr 10, 2008 8:27 AM MDT up reply actions
Re: My thoughts
I didn't mention Hejduk in the recap but maybe I should have. The poor guy needs to fire his optometrist, stat. He hit everything and anything around the goal all night, but didn't have a single shot that looked like it could have gone in. His shooting was awful.
Hopefully he calms down or loosens up on the stick or otherwise stops whatever it is that's keeping him from scoring. The team will need all the offense they can get in this series.
knee to Theodore
that was Veilleux, I believe, not Gaborik.
I didn't think the officiating was terrible. The Hannan hold and Brunette board were tough calls, but officials will make those calls pretty much any time. I do think they could have called some more on the Wild, especially when they hit Theodore, but that's life I guess.
Besides, that non-call on Hejduk in the 3rd was bigger than either of the questionable calls. Now, I don't like how quick most refs are to call a trip - it seems like all you have to do is touch a skate with a stick to get called for tripping. So, while I'm not sure that play was a trip, MOST times that gets called. Heck, Hejduk stopped skating when it was over figuring the play was going to get whistled. When that happened, I decided the disparity in the officiating was resolved.
by David Driscoll-Carignan on Apr 10, 2008 9:17 AM MDT up reply actions
you're crazy
the officiating was awful, particularly in the 3rd. cross-check after cross-check went uncalled.
Hejduk's was indeed a penalty, but one missed call in our favor doesn't mitigate the mountain of missed ones the other way.
I really don't have an issue with loose or tight officiating -- as long as it's fair. it wasn't fair last night.
Re: you're crazy
Exactly. If it had been one penalty called against each team, I wouldn't complain. But five calls for Minnesota and just one for the Avs, considering all the liberties being taken? Total crap.
Just my 2 cents:
Awesome all around game last night, both from the standpoint of a spectator and an Avs fan. I know that it's WAY early in the playoffs, but IMHO, the Avs looked fast, physical and frankly dangerous enough to cause problems for anybody in the playoffs last night. Theo was awesome and not only controlled the rebound OK, but when he did not he was well positioned for the next shot. They took the Wild's best shot (with some frankly charitable hometown officiating in the first period) and outplayed the Wild with the exception of about 2 minutes of the 3rd period (which made the game look more even than it was, unfortunately). If we can get out of Minny with 1 more win, I'll be ecstatic about our chances of advancing.
Now, if we can just find a way to get the local sports schmucks to stop writing Super Joe retirement columns....

"Wojtek "Suck My Ass, Q" Wolski"
made me laugh out loud at work. Thanks a lot for blowing my cover, jerks. :)
by DenverSC on Apr 10, 2008 9:12 AM MDT up reply actions
So
If Wolski plays this well because of the benching, does that mean Q was right?
I still say no, because I don't think Wolski was ever playing that bad to begin with. But maybe it is motiviating him. Or it could be that he is naturally motivated for the playoffs/end of the regular season. Benching him nearly gambled away the playoffs, so I still say it was a mistake, but the argument could be made that it's helping him play better.
by Jibblescribbits on Apr 10, 2008 9:33 AM MDT up reply actions
Re: So
I thought about that. But, like you said, you have to be playing terrible for a benching to be a motivator. He had a couple of bad games but was still far more effective and consistent than other guys on the team.
I'm still going to believe that Q was wrong and Wolski is just showing him up now.
Re: So
I also have to disagree with the Wolski benching.
#1 he wasn't playing terrible before. He was tied for third in points on the team and was one of a few guys who was actually going into the corners. He also was the one guy back on the back-check creating havoc for the opponent trying to leave their zone with the puck.
#2You also have to be careful about benching a guy to motivate him. Maybe Q knows that Wolski would take it the right way and come out and kick some ass after. But if that is his strategy there are a couple of other guys that should have been benched earlier and more frequently. Wolski's young still and you expect him to make a mistake or too, but when some of the veterans are making the same mistake or worse ones and you don't bench them, I think it sends the wrong message. I have absolutely no problem benching a veteran...it seems to me Q does.

I agree with you, i was just throwing it out there, because the case can be made in the other direction as well.

Officiating was brutally one-sided
There is no way in Detroit (hell) that anyone can convince me that Minny deserved 5 PPs while Colorado only deserved one. That was gutless, hometown officiating at its worst. And in the playoffs no less?????? The board on Bruno was a joke, and several worse infractions went uncalled on the Wild early in the game. Sorry, but that is my rant. The Avs overcame the crowd, the Wild, and the officiating last night. I hope those gutless turds don't officiate the next game.
Also
I thought the Hannan interference/hook/hold or whatever it was (not the justified elbowing penalty later) was a bad call as well. I know he had one hand off his stick, but he made a good play. he basically muscled his way into position then dropped the guy with the puck.
In fact, that's exactly the kind of defense we're paying him for. For it to be called a penalty was excruciatingly awful.
And Shane made a great point that they missed Hejduk's obvious trip, in which the avs almost scored because everyone on the ice expected him to go to the box.

Re: Also
I was very impressed with Hannan's intensity all night long. He was a beast.
He's finally living up to that haircut of his.
agreed
Hannan's hit on Rolston was a great play, plain and simple. No penalty there.
The worst part, though, was still the lack of calls on the Wild. they got away with bloody murder on crosschecks and holds on the boards. I was furious last night.
Just like to point out
the following superstitions that will be followed at our house on Friday:
- Mike must wear 3rd personalized jersey
- Wings must again be had for dinner
- Mrs @ MHH cannot watch. Goal #1 was scored while I was in the shower. Goal #2 was scored while I dried my hair. OT Goal was scored as I was sleeping (I know, I know, but I couldn't help it!).
Re: Just like to point out
Come to think of it, I had wings for dinner, too. Sure, they were the vegetarian version, but they were winged-shaped nonetheless.
Looks like I'll need to hit the grocery store and stock up.
Wings for dinner on Friday everybody!
mmmm
I had burgers straight from the grill (turkey burgeys, so a winged animal).
But i could live with wings.

Creepy
I had wings too!!!!!!! I see mysterious forces at work.
By the way, the bar last night, erupted for Super Joe's goal and most people were there to watch an ultimately meaningless Rockies game. By half way through the 3rd period those heads started to turn to the big screen with Hejduk hitting posts, potential goals under review and a penalty shot. That and the Rockies game was out of hand (12-6 at that point).
I think you're missing the point
it's no longer a matter of not being able to watch the game. You now are required to shower while the game is on. Honest, we wouldn't ask if it was scientifically proven.
I was wearing my 3rd as well. Maybe Mike and I should be getting more credit for the win than we already have...

the team plays like this every night...
and we're winning a cup. it's that simple. we're tough at both ends, skilled offensively, nasty on on D, and our goaltending is as solid as it's been since Roy (yeah, I said it).
- Even though Hannan took a dumb penalty late, I thought he played with an edge he hadn't had all season. he was nasty!
- Finger had some really good plays, but he had a couple "stand around and watch" moments too, and the goal that came off his skate was fluky...but still his fault. This is what happens when you turn your back to the play, Jeff. what's weirder is he didn't even have to turn his back...he just tunnel visioned badly.
- Offensively, the Forsberg / Stastny / Hejduk line may have been held off the sheet, but they were still awesome. Lots of pressure, and 2 posts from the line's finisher. Is Stastny insane defensively or what?
- Player of the game was Smitty. His best game in an Avs uniform.
oh
and it's been well covered by everyone else, but Arny was still worthless despite some extra hustle.

Re: the team plays...
I said it above and I'll say it again to echo your sentiment: Hannan was a beast. Both he and Smyth had superb games and both went a long way to earning their fat paychecks.
As for the Peter, Paul and Milan line, they weren't shut down like Marian Gaborik was shut down, that's for sure. Gaborik was totally taken out of the game last night.
Re: Hannan
I bitched n' moaned about Hannan most of the season. He always seemed pretty invisible to me, never could figure out why we're paying him so much. I NOW know why.
Breathe deep
One game doesn't justify his salary. I know, I know, it's not his fault the Avs overpaid him. Anyway, he was so-so last night, he's worryingly slow, and I think he'll continue to get caught out by a fast team.
Now Smyth, on the other hand...wait, nope, still doesn't justify that salary, either. But he certainly showed glimpses.
Salei was terrific except for one teeny-tiny little mistake in OT that could have killed us. He's worth $4.5, easily.
I wouldn't get too worked up about the 3 stars. Anyone notice that Trevor Linden was the 1st star of the game in Vancouver's season finale? Especially considering the hockey intelligence of most of the guys who pick the stars, it's nothing to sweat.
Linden
That was a tribute to his career in Vancouver, since he's expected to retire this off-season. I had no probs with that one...
And it was a meaningless regular season finale as well. A playoff game 3-stars should at least resemble the 3-best players on the ice, why even pick them if they don't?

They just grabbed a couple of fans from the crowd and put the striped unis on them.
I know the NHL somehow grades the refs and supposedly only the best get to ref playoff games. But I don't know how they choose who refs where or anything. I also wonder if Q can send tape into the league of the various called and uncalled transgressions and request that those particular refs not officiate any more games in this series?
I liked the fact that we were able to review the uncalled cross check on Jones over and over and over again as they reviewed the disallowed goal. I wonder if the guys upstairs said something like, "Well, we agree with your call of disallowing the goal, but man, you sure missed one doozy of a cross check."

Re: BTW Joe
With the eventual transition to the new platform (hopefully some time in May), I should be able to search and sort archived comments pretty well. That should be fun.
As of right now, there are just so many that it's way too hard to sort manually. Not that I'm complaining.
I'd put $5

if I could make a humble suggestion...
the comments on this blog are by and large good, much better that the "flat" comments on most blogs. the threading helping a lot when trying to figure things out.
but if there's a way to make the silly subjects go away in the new system, please do. they're not needed for the quick hit posts most do.
Re: if I could make a humble suggestion...
Grumpy today?
There will be an active recommendation system in the new platform, so if you think something is silly, you can make your opinion known with a simple click.
Conversely, if you think a comment is freakin' awesome and worth discussing, you can click it and boost its rating. All that will be explained more fully when we switch over.
i think people are misunderstanding
i have no issue with this particular subject, or any other.
I'm talking about the comment system here as a whole. It's pretty good structurally -- there's threading to the comments so you can see who replies to whom (as opposed to "flat" comment systems like at jibble's or DD's, just as examples). My suggestion was just that it's the whole CONCEPT of required subjects for what are generally 1-2 line posts might be worth re-evaluating at the move to the new system. they're silly.
sorry Rookie and Joe, I see how I was unclear. Subjects in general, not this one.
Ah!
I see what you're saying now. My apologies for not reading closely.
For one thing, if you hop over to an SB blog like Bleed Cubbie Blue that has already switched, you'll see that the comments do thread in a similar way to how they do here. So that will be mostly unchanged.
What will be changed is the fact that the screen will automatically refresh, so instead of hitting reload or F5 over and over, new comments will just pop up once they're posted. That's awesome.
The subject line will still be required, from what I've seen, but if we deem it to be largely unnecessary, I may have the ability to axe it or at least make it automatically fill itself in with something relevant. Again, I'm still unfamiliar with some of the new features of the 2.0 platform, but hopefully it will all be even easier to use (and read).
if it just auto-filled the subject by default
that would be better, even though I think eliminating them entirely would still be better.
new design looks nice, I hope the blog maintains it's simple, clean look.

But that's the thing
I don't root for anyone, I just can't get into baseball enough to pick a favorite team. Even when the Rockies were winning last season I truned on some games, but they never held my interest. I was slightly bummed to see them lose but it was like "bummer" then flipped to The Daily Show
So i guess it's not fair for me to make fun of anyone's baseball team, because there's no way they can get me back, at all. Not really fair, So i guess I retract my remarks about the Cubs.

Re: But that's the thing
That's very big of you.
You're a good man, Jibblescribbits. I don't understand Americans who don't like baseball, but I don't understand Dane Cook fans, either, so whatever.
To each his own. Go Cubbies!
Wait...
Did you just compare me to a Dane Cook fan. IF that's the case I retract my retraction.

Clear
Ok then I retract the retraction of the initial retraction.

I'm pretty sure that most Dane Cook fans
also like baseball. To me, they go hand in hand.

Don't get me wrong
I'll watch an occasional baseball game. Once I'm done watching my grass grow and some paint dry. I'm that kind of guy.

Re: Don't get me wrong
See, the best thing about baseball is it involves grass (the field) and paint (the base lines), so you can actually watch all three things at once!
It's the perfect game!
Baseball lost me after the strike
not that I was really a fan before that. I don't mind going to a game, but I can't watch it on T.V. I'd rather eat those paint chips Bob has drying.

Somewhat Dissapointed
Maybe I have been watching the Avs for too long, I don't know. While the game was fast and super exciting, I was really hoping the boys would come out and show us a team that looked like a Stanley Cup contender. I'm actually pretty pissed at the Denver MSM (Dater especially) for mocking the ages of our star players and rooting against us for a first round win. I was really hoping to see the team come out and make them eat their words. Instead, we barely won the game. Minni was anything but Mild in the first period and I don't think the Avs responded well enough to the physical play. Although we scored, the shots on goal were clearly in Minni's favor. This is the Mild for godsake. We should have clobbered them last night with our "Stanley Cup championshipness" to their "we barely won the divisionness". The reality is, if the rest of the series is this tight or continues to go into OT (god forbid double and triple OT), even if we win, we will be too tired and beat up to advance past the second round. IMO
Kinda like 2001
We won that Cup but 2 of the 4 series went seven games. (Kings in the semi's and Jersey in the Final).
All three of our series the next year went 7 games and I think it wore the team down. I would rather not go 7 games against the Wild and I definitely don't want any more games in OT. We all know Forsberg can't play 20 minutes every game, I think it will also wear out some of our other "older" players.
