WCQ Game 2: Avalanche At Wild, Preview And Open Thread

Another early start to the game thread because there's nothing else to talk about today except tonight's matchup.
Sure, things fell the Avs' way in Game 1, but don't think for a second---even with the mounting injuries faced by the Wild---that Minnesota is out of it. If anything, getting humbled in front of their own crowd is only going to make them play harder. Nobody wants to go home early from the playoffs.
Mark Parrish is out, but Martin Skoula will play with a sore leg and Chris Simon will likely be in, so the Avs will have to keep their heads up at all times because he's the dirtiest player in the league. Forsberg needs to stay light on his skates because he'll be dodging two-handers all night long. Even Forsberg shadow Brent Burns is not above cheap play, and neither is the rest of his team. The good news is, Burns had to play 30 minutes in game 1, and if he has to do it again tonight, he'll be toast.
Foppa wasn't happy with his line's performance on Wednesday, and you know he'll be even more motivated to get his name on the scoreboard a couple of times. Stastny's probably over his jitters by now, and hopefully Hejduk has met with a good eye doctor. No more ringers off the post, no more missed open-net chances.
The Avs' shut-down tag team of Lappy and Ben Guite (along with the D-men) was stellar against Marian Gaborik in game 1, and keeping the whiny little winger frustrated should be priority number one. Shouldn't be too hard, if the last game of the regular season and the first game of the playoffs are any indication.
Finally, if Ryan Smyth plays as hard tonight as he did on Wednesday, I've got two "Free Mullet Grooming" tickets here with his name on them. Smytty, call me.
Now, some notes about the thread today:
- During the game, the Avalanche goaltender's name MUST NOT BE MENTIONED. You can comment on goaltending in general, but do not utter his name. I'm extremely superstitious right now, and we don't want to cause any problems for a guy who could still revert back to his old self at any second. Now, as for Nik Backstrom, I think he's the best goalie of all time. Backstrom Backstrom Backstrom.
- Whatever you had for dinner on Wednesday evening should be the same thing you eat today. If you had wings, eat wings again. If you had a $250 steak dinner, you better get your gold card back out, Mr. Moneypants.
- If you were wearing a particular Avalanche jersey during game 1, wear it again. If the Avs lose tonight, burn it. Sure, it's painful, but that should teach you not to shell out $180 for authentic jerseys when you're not an authentic NHL player.
- If and when we reach about 380 comments or so, I'm going to start a new thread and everybody should move over there. Keep an eye out for the comments total at the bottom of the screen and be ready to switch threads. Otherwise, well, things can get messy.
- Finally, Wild fans are welcome, but I get a special kind of satisfaction from banning people, so play nice and understand that you're in enemy territory. I wouldn't want to post comments on a Wild blog tonight, but to each their own. Be civilized.
Now, let's get this party started. The game starts at 7:00 PM Mountain time, 9:00 PM Eastern. Altitude will be showing it, but Versus will be joining it in progress after Alex Ovechkin single-handedly dismantles the Flyers. I'm not sure if Center Ice will black out the Altitude feed for all of us out-of-towners (since Versus doesn't have exclusive rights) but I would expect it. Be prepared for anything.
ESPN preview.
ADDENDUM: Dater reports that Mike Haynes' surgery was a success and a full recovery is expected. That's fantastic news! Get well soon, Hayner, Haynsie or whatever your hockey nickname may be.

I HATE THE RED WINGS!!
Okay, now that I've gotten that off my chest, I can enjoy tonight's game. I'm still recovering from last night's Preds debacle. Apparently slew footing is allowed as long as it leads to a goal by Zetterberg.
Anyway, on to better things...
What flavor wings are we doing tonight? Anything special? My favorite is Garlic Parmesean, but I think if we're going to be having Wings indefinitely we should try some new flavors...
my fave too, at BWW
but they don't like me so much. Chicken wings are always appropriate for the playoffs, when the chicken sh&% wings come out to play.

BWW
I got hooked to this place in grad school (3 blocks from my building). Then one moved to Longmont when I lived there. I moved to SJ and....
The closest one is in Reno (4 hours). There are NO good wings places in San Jose. none. I haven't even seen a Pizza Hut "Wings Street".

Re: I hate
For anyone who is not dead animal-inclined, I highly recommend this fine product:

Nutrition information. A serving size is five wings, but I typically eat about 15. I'm a growing boy.
And yes, they're delicious. I don't eat food that tastes like crap, as a rule.
Veggie Wings
You'll have to soak them in double the Ranch Dressing to make up for all the saturated fat you're missing from the animal-based wings. If we're going to plug arteries watching Avs games, let's all try to do it at the same rate here.

Yeah, Blue Cheese is for those snobby New England prima donnas. Here in the Heartland we're either eating ranch dressing or plain ol' barbecue sauce.

Don't know if I could get
Mike to try these. I have a hard enough time getting him to eat any veggies. I try to tell him he should set a good example for Baby @ MHH, and I'm slowly turning him around...

Apalling
I would never deem a $250 steak to be acceptable. The risk of poor cooking is simply to high at that price.
In other news, hockey can do no wrong these days. Avs and Notre Dame win their playoff games in OT Wed. and Thur. so tonight is destined to be a win.

$250 steak
I spent a good 20 minutes trying to think of an acceptable reason for a $250 steak, and naturally my thoughts turned to BJs (I'm'sure i'm not alone there huh guys?) but if you're going to spend $250 for that.. why bother for steak?
So no I can't think of one acceptable reason. Not one
by Jibblescribbits on Apr 11, 2008 10:34 AM MDT up reply actions
Well
I am inferring that $250 is too low a price. $375 is my minimum steak dinner price.

from russo's blog:
"Ian Laperriere was here early and looked like he could barely move. I think he was hit by a Brian Rolston shot. Don’t know if he’s playing."

Re: no dig on Lappy
Are you smoking crack this week? No dig on you, but we're not talking hockey skill level here, even though Lappy is still better than McCormick in that regard. I highly doubt McCormick will have the same mind-numbing effect on Gaborik that Lappy has had---not to mention all the other intangibles that Ian brings to the team.
First you went easy on the refs, and now you're saying Lappy's no big deal. This is the playoffs, Drafty! Where's your homerism?
meh
any crack smoker like me could tell you that Foote was the guy most responsible for making Gaborik look like Gandalf.
by David Driscoll-Carignan on Apr 11, 2008 12:00 PM MDT up reply actions
Re: meh
Come on, man. We're comparing McCormick and Lappy. Foote's not even in the discussion. Even if Footer is the guy most responsible (at least in game 1), Lappy also has had an effect, and it's doubtful that McCormick could duplicate it. Whether or not Foote is the main man or not, McCormick can't replace Lappy---that's all I'm saying.
I guess I've been outed
I'm actually a writer who covers the Sharks. All this time, I've been posing as a crappy Avalanche blogger for reasons you wouldn't fully understand. My real name is Bart Needlehauser and I know absolutely nothing about Ian Laperriere. I'm just partial to the name "Cody" and that's why I said nice things about him.

For "big" games...
Maybe it would be possible to have a pre-game thread, then an in-game thread? Probably a pain in the ass and more work, just saying that might make it more manageable. That's how they do it on the Arsenal forum (and other popular forums) over at Big Soccer.
Re: For "big" games
Yeah, let me tell you, typing a few sentences and then clicking the mouse two or three times is a lot more work!
To be honest, though, I don't really want multiple threads for just one game, at least not intentionally. I like having the pre-game chatter switch over to in-game chatter mid-way through the thread.
I also like hyphens.
Re: I say

Good thinkin'.
Heresy
I say we put DD on trial for heresy because of his complete disregard for homerism, what with his pagan ways like "logic" "reason" "rational" and most egregiously "objectivity".
This is the playoffs and we can't have any of that in these parts.
Next thing you know he'll turn McLeod into a newt!

Re: Heresy
Pitchforks and Torches, bitches, Pitchforks and Torches...
For the remainder of tonight's thread, DD will be known as ...
Angry-Mob Dodger. AMD for short.
If Lappy's out...
I'd play Hlinka instead of Cody McC. If you lose Lappy you lose your number one penalty killing forward, and Hlinka can kill penalties.
A move I thought was flat-out bizarre a few weeks ago seems to be paying off, as the coaches now have red-haired Cody killing penalties. I didn't think he was fast enough or experienced enough to do it, but it doesn't seem to be killing us. Sakic and Hejduk, that 2nd PK unit in the past, need their rest. Of course Guite and Son of Stastny are the most important forwards after Lappy on the PK.
So...let's say Original Cody is in the lineup tonight. Which one of the forwards do want to fill Lappy's whopping PK time with? Do you want to tack on an extra 3 minutes of ice time for Hejduk? Do you want to give Smyth a shot? More PK time for McLeod?
Oh, and certainly everyone in the whole entire world has a right to their opinion - it doesn't even have to be informed - but when you say there's not much of a dropoff from Lappy to Cody McC, you should expect to get some disagreement. The PK is only one factor. I can't even think of how to measure the intangibles.
By the way, ice time stats here for game 1 from NHL.com, in case you're interested:
http://www.nhl.com/scores/htmlreport...
not that i disagree
but lappy has been playing RW, Hlinka seems to only play LW or C. McCormick is a RW/C. iirc.
seems like its moot anyways, Dater reports no changes to Avs lineup.
Re: not that i disagree
Even though Dater has admitted the team tells him just about nothing believable.
Let's just hope he's right and there are no changes.
Dinner
UH OH.
I skipped dinner on Wednesday. Instead, I had six homemade margaritas. Tonight is gonna be fun!
yeah
As the tension raised in the 3rd period, I started drinking faster. I was near chug mode come OT.
On the Drinking Note
I'm gonna try to play a game with buddies, any ideas on what to drink on other than posts hit and times people bounce off Booger?
My personal fave
is everytime Arny gets:
a) knocked off the puck
b) gives the puck up because he's ABOUT to be under pressure.
You'll be hammered by the time they cut to the first commercial break in the second period...
Drinking games
Skoula coughs up a puck for us...drink
Kitten killed...drink (none so far!)
3Avs forwards below the icing line...drink
Uncalled obvious cross-check goes uncalled...drink (this one speeds up the drinking as the game goes one)
That stupid WHOOOOHOOOOHOAAAAOOOO song the wild ply after they score a goal... BIG DRINK

RE: Dinner
Same here, this means it's another skipped dinner... I was starving come OT but the game was too good to leave for even a second.
This thread..

On the Drinking Note
I would have to say that I, too, was in guzzling mode by the time OT rolled around. I'm really hoping for a huge effort by the Avs tonight to reduce the risk of heart attack and reduce the damage to my liver. As for the dinner thing, it will be impossible to recreate as the hubby at the last piece of left over pizza and I ate the left-over salad. It's too late to have left-overs today as we would have had to order the same dinner yesterday. That being said, I am considering ordering the same menu for tonight. It just won't be leftovers.

Try TSN online to see if they are streaming the game. I think they are. However, it is join in progress so you may miss some of the first period. Otherwise, you will have to deal with sopcast.

trades him a new one and the fans are pissed, apparently the one who got the stick doesn't care, every one else does.
Awesome
First period was great. We played very well with good chances, clearing the puck, and of course, Forsberg scores (although, he did not look happy about it). This is starting to look more like a playoff team. Even better, Smyth is still flying all over the ice and Stastny is pitching in on D for some good plays. Can't wait for the second period! Let's keep it up, boys!
Remember the rules
about what you CAN and CAN'T talk about during intermission.
Like, for instance, how Backstrom can raise the dead because he's THAT AWESOME of a goaltender. Just ask Pierre, he'll tell you!
First period
Man, the Avs were hitting like beasts late in the first. Minnesota looks lost on the ice.
And the Smyth takeaway was killer. Nobody to pass to, but killer nonetheless.
Didn't....?
Didn't the Wild bulk up this season so they wouldn't be outplayed physically? They were outmuscled by the Ducks last season and it seemed like they wanted to get bigger and stronger so it wouldn't happen again. Well, so far, the Avs are outmuscling the Wild. And the Avs are no Ducks in terms of physicality/hitting, that's for sure.

Yeah, they muscled up, but their muscle has no skill. Fedoruk, Simon and Boogaard are all lousy hockey players. Good fighters, but lousy hockey players.
The Avs' big hitters, Ben Guite, Jeff Finger and Lappy are all pretty good players. They can hit AND play offense.

In depth knowledge for Altitude
Minnesota fans love big hits by the wild, boo every big hit form the Avs wanting penaltys. Where would we be without that hockey knowledge
Finally a good call
Belanger goes out for high sticking Foppa.
Avs ready another kitten for the cannon.
Another kitten is waiting in fear...
Belanger for high sticking, maybe the Wild did get away with the elbow on Forsberg???
Re: Forsberg
And he got away with goaltender interference. I guess it was consolation for all the dirty play on him not called.

hooked him in the armpit, slowed him down.... that's exactly the kind of stuff the rules supposed to penalize, good call. Forsberg just got lazy on that one.
Your eyes are better than mine
I didn't notice that as much. Nice job.

I don't know
if my heart can take this crap...
Wasn't this supposed to be a tight-checking, neutral zone series! Lot's of up and down action and the Wild's sloppy play in their own end is threatening to rub off on the Avs.
How to fix the PP: MORE SHOTS FROM THE POINT!!!!
Intermission
Jessica's getting cleaned up in the locker room, ready to start the third period.

It's goal time.

If it's with Bettman, then you probably didn't miss much.
by HawkEye19 on Apr 11, 2008 8:53 PM MDT up reply actions
It was with Bettman
and no, i didn't miss much. Something about working with the players and the fans having more ways to watch games if they shell out $100's of dollars
Elbows
Versus just showed a replay of Burns ramming his elbow into Forsberg over and over and over. No whistles.

Oh, that's why everyone posted at the game was tied. That's what I get for living in the past...

Altitude Ads
Could you please make those Subaru ads just a little BIGGER, I can still see some of the game.

At least it's the best... I mean they say it right in the title. It's gotta be true

Oh shit x 2
Boogaard just hit Liles hard and he immediately went to the bench. I hope he's just shaken.
on ice
he's back on ice.
I'd like to see the hit in a close up, it was very hard to tell, but it looked like it could have been knee-to-knee.
But again, tough to tell
by Jibblescribbits on Apr 11, 2008 9:04 PM MDT up reply actions
Oh
I thought differently after the replay, but i can see he did kinda lead with the knee. It looks more careless than intentionally to me
by Jibblescribbits on Apr 11, 2008 9:07 PM MDT up reply actions
Nope
Liles tried to slip the hit and got caught awkwardly.. glad he's ok
by Jibblescribbits on Apr 11, 2008 9:05 PM MDT up reply actions
I remember
About 1 years ago, the Avs played the Wild last game or so of the season, and Sackic and Stevie Y had a knee to knee. I looked like Sackic stuck a knee out, but I knew better. I'll bet large sums of money this was the same.
by HawkEye19 on Apr 11, 2008 9:12 PM MDT up reply actions
Re: I remember
Yeah, but which player is more likely to stick a knee out? Joe Sakic or Derek Boogaard?

Sheriff
I really wish Parker wasn't injured, so he could beat down Boogard or Simon or someone. Oh well.
Since the Wild tied this
the officials have officially swallowed their whistles...two hooks and a trip on the Wild have not been called...
Re: Time Limit
I think the New NHL farce ended this season when not a single team scored more than 262 goals. That's pre-Lockout.
Arnason...
Is fucking useless. Seriously, Hlinka's not a better option than Arny?
by Jibblescribbits on Apr 11, 2008 9:11 PM MDT reply actions
Frustrating
Smyth and Bruno did a great job of keeping the puck in and Arnason gave it away in fear of breaking a nail...
Arnason, more like Pussy-a-son

horrible fricken call considering
everything they haven't called. What a damn joke. Gutless officials influenced by the crowd.

Kidding
You have got to be fucking kidding... That's called but they ignore the ones pulled by Wild?
WHAT
THE FUCK IS THAT?
That is a penalty? With all the other shit thats gone on in the third period, you call THAT? BULLSHIT!
Hooking penalty to someone
thanks for explaining Altitude, surely this stupid Conico ad could wait for an explanation of the penalty.
gutless officials
gutless, gutless, gutless. If the Avs get the same home cookin' in the Can the games won't even be close. F the wild. F the refs.
PK
Successful kill by the Avs, but the Wild had a ton of shots.
I'm honestly going to need an ambulance soon.
Wow
That was a good pp for the Wild. We gotta tighten up here. Looks like OT again.....oh my poor heart! Still young, yet so worn!!
by Mike the Avs Fan on Apr 11, 2008 9:20 PM MDT reply actions
Hey
"Grabbing a streaking player around the waist is a holding penalty...."
Its not that that was called thats the issue. That was the right call. It's that all the other stuff hasn't been. There is zero continuity in this game.
No dispute
I don't doubt there has been little continuity to the game. I've got the FSN feed, so they do not focus on what the Wild do to the Avs (as much). Fact of the matter is that a penalty that blatant has to be called.

Holy crap
This is the most important kitten rescue of the season. For the love of god, Colorado, don't let this one die.
6-on-4
Smyth may have tipped it

Is giving a lot of credit to coach Q for that last goal... it's hard to argue with them either. The Avs did everything right there, and Q has to get some credit for that
