WCQ Game 2: Wild 3, Avalanche 2 (OT)

If anyone expected the Colorado Avalanche to sweep the Minnesota Wild in the Western Conference Quarterfinals, they were kidding themselves.  In that building, in front of that crowd, the Avalanche are lucky to be returning to Denver with a win in hand.

After another intense, roller coaster of a game, Keith Carney of the Wild exploited a bad shift by Joe Sakic and his linemates, and got a lucky tip off the skate of Ruslan Salei to win the game just 1:14 into overtime.  Sometimes Super Joe isn't all that clutch.  Mikko Koivu made him look silly on defense before getting the puck to Carney and the rest is history.

The Avalanche have been extremely consistent so far.  They've scored first in both games, and then squandered the lead in the third period.  Only this time overtime didn't go their way.

Peter Forsberg scored a gorgeous goal in the first period off an assist from Jeff Finger, and Milan Hejduk tipped a John-Michael Liles slap shot on a power play in the last minute of third period to tie the game and send it to OT.  Forsberg had the second assist.  But it was all just a big tease.

While Forsberg had an excellent game, Super Joe was a little less than super.  As Dater points out about Carney's overtime winner:

The Wild had a good shift against the Avs line of Joe Sakic, Andrew Brunette and Wojtek Wolski — a line that just didn't play its best all night — and victory came after Carney slapped it from the left boards, while Salei was tied up with Brian Rolston.

The most frustrating failure of that line was in the third period when Wojtek Wolski made an unbelievable pass to Andrew Brunette in the slot.  All Brunette had to do was spin and backhand the biscuit past a completely-beaten Niklas Backstrom.  But Brunette spun slower than the planet's rotation and Brent Burns made an incredible poke check and the goal that should have been just didn't happen.

That's hockey, but it still hurt.

Now, changing the subject a bit.  For the record, I'm done complaining about the officials.  I let myself get too wrapped up in their ineptitude and it's just not worth the stress and frustration.  If I have to comment at all, I have to say that it's incredible how much photographic evidence there is that the refs systematically swallowed their whistles last night and in game 1.

I hope the coaches and captains of both teams register formal complaints with the league.  But as for me, I'm done talking about it.

The Avs now rest for two days and ready themselves for game 3 in Denver on Monday.  I think we fans could use a couple of days to rest, too.  I know I'll be watching Boston-Montreal game tonight and the Philly-Washington match on Sunday to get my mind off of the Avalanche for a bit.  I can't wait.

And hopefully I can find all the new gray hairs I have and yank them.  By the time the Colorado-Minnesota series is over, I might just have to shave my head to maintain my boyish good looks.

Finally, a note about the game thread.  Again, it was incredible, and though I was forced to split it up when the game went to overtime, the two threads combined totaled nearly 460 comments (and 2500 page views), by far a new record.  The participation has been unbelievable, and I want to thank everybody for joining in.  It's been fun as hell.

Now, rest up, take it easy, and get ready for another nail-biter on Monday.

Stars of the Game:

  1. Keith Carney (1g, 0a)
  1. Niklas Backstrom (24sv, .923)
  1. Peter Forsberg (1g, 1a)

minor correction

"I might just have to shave my head to maintain my boyish good looks."

I believe you are confusing yourself with Justin Timberlake again.

other than that, I agree with everything.

bad calls are one thing

But not calling Hejduk getting boarded or Staz getting hooked in the face is just trouble.

Never trust the lunch lady.

I think its not all that bad

We had tons of block shots, Forsberg was great, Théo was good except for the Koivu goal, and I didn't see Gaborik do anything special. The Avs also held their own against a very physical team.
Who knew Stastny could hit this hard? Smytty had another terrific game.  I agree with some of the points you make though. Sakic wasn't all that great, but its quite rare we have to say that. Although I was really pissed when Carney scored, I'm quite satisfied going back to Denver with a win and a banged up Wild defence. That said, Go Avs!

I think

the crowd at Le Can and the altitude will work wonders in the Avs' favor in game three.  Any word on Branko's knee?  Do the Mild have to call up ANOTHER minor-leaguer-who-should-be-playing-if-it-wasn't-for-Skoula?

the Mild

are okay at forward. They have Chris Simon, Benoit Pouliot and Matt Foy and I think ALL of them are healthy. Not that any are studs, but at least they have NHL experience, unlike the Wild's 7th defenseman (Erik Reitz)

quick update

Branko did make the trip to Denver and Schultz was one of a handful of players to skate today in Minnesota before the team headed West. No one is saying anything yet, but I wouldn't be shocked at all to see Schultz if this thing goes to 6 or 7 games...

The back-to-back

will be interesting.  Hopefully Forsberg can find a way to refuel the tank after playing 18+ minutes again last night.  It would be nice to get a 2/3 goal lead and let the third and 4th lines have a little more ice time (Guite and Mcleod had just over 9 min, Lappy had 11) With the Jones injury some one should have played more with Smyth and Arny.  Wolski still isn't getting any love from Q just 12 minutes. (you're right Joe I don't know if he even played in the 1st period?)

Can some tell me why Arnason is getting extended pp minutes?

Wolski

I thought he was junk for much of the first half of the game. I'm one of the biggest Wolski supporters out there, but you can't put this all on Q. He's got to earn that time...

What's our record??.....

when Forsberg scores? It's like 114-30 or something right? What is it in the playoffs? Anyone know? Anyone know why we lost even though he scored??? That's not supposed to happen!!!!! >:(

Who plays?

If Jones is out, who will play, Hlinka or McCormick? I would like to give Hlinka a shot here. I think he would do well with Smyth-Arnason.

by Mike the Avs Fan on Apr 12, 2008 1:52 PM MDT   0 recs

I believe...

Hlinka played Center before coming to the NHL.

by Americanario on Apr 13, 2008 4:05 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

so he did

but when he plays wing he generally plays left, i thought.

Forwards?

Unfortunately all rooms with TVs in this dorm have no internet, so I can't join in on the live commenting, but I just have to say that besides the fourth line (who had an amazing game) the only consistently good forwards have been Foppa and Smytty. Milan has been trying hard, but he's been the weak link on that line so far this series. Stastny and Wolski have also put in the effort (and some hits) with more success, but haven't been consistent, which is especially odd for Paul given how solid he was all season. And Bruno has just had a terrible series.
Americanario- every time the Avs went on the PP and TSN showed a close-up of Arnason's face, a little part of me died. I'm pretty sure Smytty felt that way for the whole game. Someone here pointed it out before, but when the puck went in the corner all three of them would end up below the Wild's goal line. Just awful! How much would they love Marek Svatos on that line, eh?
Also just want to comment on what a wonderful game J-M Liles had. In addition to his shot on the tying goal, he made composed, intelligent plays and shut down the Wild in our zone all night long. Every time Minnesota got a rush going I found myself looking for him on the ice for comfort. He made a bad play on the Wild's winning goal, but otherwise he was our best defenseman.
