WCQ Game 3: Wild 3, Avalanche 2 (OT)

Another first period goal for the Avalanche.  Another stellar first two periods.  Another blown lead in the third period.  Another overtime.  Another loss.

The Colorado Avalanche have apparently found a formula they're very comfortable with, as the exact same scenario played out for the third time in a row last night against the Minnesota Wild.  Unfortunately, the result wasn't victory like in game 1, it was defeat like in game 2.

The Avs got off to a good start when Andrew Brunette potted a goal from the slot off a rebound from a Joe Sakic Wrist Shot™.  But the real key to the play was the superb puck handling and passing of Wojtek "Can You Bench Me Now" Wolski.  He skated into the zone, faked out a defender, stopped in his tracks and fed the puck directly to Sakic for a great wrister.

The Avs enjoyed that 1-0 lead for two full periods, as Jose Theodore was in full Pimp Cane mode for 40 great minutes.  During that time he made 23 saves.

And then, right on schedule, the team fell apart in the third period.  The Wild managed only four shots, but scored on two, with goals by Mikko Koivu and Brian Rolston.  The worst part about Rolston's goal was that it was shorthanded, and off an superb pass from Todd Fedoruk.  Ouch.

I'd say Foppa summed it up well:

"I think we sat back a little too much in the third period," Avs winger Peter Forsberg said. "We were a little tentative."

How many times have we seen that this season?  The Avs sitting back on a too-small lead.  They could write the book on that "strategy."

All seemed lost until Super Joe scored to tie it up around the 15 minute mark, with assists from Peter Forsberg and Andrew Brunette (who was killer all night).  The game, as usual, went to overtime.

Both teams were feisty in OT, with Minnesota registering twelve shots on goal and Colorado seven.  But while Theodore did his best to stop the onslaught, he couldn't prevent Pierre-Marc Bouchard's streaking game-winner at 11:58.  And the Wild now lead the series 2-1.

The main reason this game was lost?  The atrocious-as-always Avalanche power play.  "Horrendous" and "embarrassing" don't even come close to describing the special teams failure Colorado has suffered all season.  Six chances, including a brief 5-on-3, and the only thing the Avs had to show for them was a shorthanded goal-against.

It's a shame his team hasn't supported him with timely PP goals, because Jose Theodore has been playing amazingly in net.  36 saves on 39 shots, with a save percentage of .923 is great goaltending no matter how you slice it.  One of his best saves came in overtime when he slid from post to post to stop what looked to be a sure Minnesota one-timer goal.  Theo was cool and calm all night, and smothered his rebounds with little effort.

While Sakic, Brunette and Theodore were the bright lights for the Avs, the goats were Paul Stastny and Tyler Arnason.  A turnover by Stastny in the third period ended in a Minnesota goal, and he was generally out of place and ineffective the entire game.  He finished - 2.  Arnason was junk as always, failing to control the puck in the Wild zone, taking weak and off-target shots, and more or less crippling his linemates Ryan Smyth and David Jones.  If I had Coach Q's ear, you know I'd be calling for Arnason to sit and Jaroslav Hlinka to play.  Arnason has become more a liability than an asset.

So the power play still sucks, and the Avs are still giving up leads in the third period.  And their offense is weak in general.  And they're letting down a goalie who deserves to win this series.  In game 4, tonight, Paul Stastny must redeem himself, and the rest of the team needs to play like they actually want to win this series and advance.  It can't be over yet.

Pushed around and out hustled, Benchings needed.

As a team the Avs simply got outworked (with exceptions below). Individually, Arnason "set ME on fire if I have to watch him again) was the worst player on the ice with Finger following up in 2nd place on ass-sucking.

Ya, Finger, I went there. The golden boy for his 'physical' play sucked last night and should be benched. Is he just mesmerized by the playoffs? Stastny is looking like a rookie to the playoffs, but then again he is hustling and trying to keep it simple. Finger simply didn't keep his feet moving enough to be effective. Oh, and he blew the fucking game in OT, and you guys came down on me when I was concerned about it in the past.
http://www.milehighhockey.com/commen... "...make incredibley dipshit decisions in the prime up game for the playoffs. I realize he is young. I am just saying it is time for him to man up for the playoffs. Just one of his three mistakes [could cost the game]" The mistake I am referencing here was uncannily similar to last nights OT gaff (and by gaff I mean epic screw up).

Bright spots for the Avs were, of course, Sakic and Theo, I think we all saw that. Lappy played a fantistic game and it was great to see. His PK in particular was solid, with several great plays coming to mind.

I continue to be impressed by the hard play of Jones, even if he wasn't quite a bright spot.

Before closing, I wonder if Q thinking of benching the wrong guys. Wolski's TOI was in the crapper, despite setting up the first scoring play and actually hitting on the forecheck. Not that Wolski needs 26 minutes of ice time, but 15 (same as Arny) is weak. Smyth was only at 19 minutes with Foppa clocking 24 minutes. Shave 2-3 minutes off Forsberg and give them to Smyth/Wolski before he breaks.

I hate getting outcoached. >:

completely agreed

Finger stood around all night -- and this isn't the first time he's done it.  Poor Salei would harass the puck carrier, they'd slip away behind the net and Finger would literally watch them come out in front.  He was a pylon in his own zone last night.  Awful, awful performance -- one deserving of benching, what with a defensman like Leopold scratched for him.

Theo was incredible (though that mishandling of the puck was pretty bad).

Lappy played well, I agree, but he had a wide open net to put the game further away...and missed.  I was mad.  So did Wolski on the end of the 2nd.

I continue to ask, what is it going to take to get Arnason scratched?

Lappy

That missed net sucked, I was really hoping that line would get a goal. I don't count goals in my Lappy assessments though :P

Re: Pushed around

In his defense, if the puck had not bounced off the side of the net in OT, Finger would have had it.  He played the puck just like he should have - if the puck had gone right where it should have.  It was a bad bounce and he paid for it.

Now, that said, I completely agree with you that he looked pretty bad throughout the game last night.  And I think it's time Jordan Leopold got some ice time.

Finger out, Leoprone in.

I too agree

Arnason needs to be benched. His play is getting worse (if that is possible) and he can’t dig the puck out of a paper bag. He coughed up the puck numerous times last night either creating chances for the Wild or forcing us to retreat from the O-zone during a power play because his passes missed their targets by a mile. And how many open net chances did he fumble? Which team is he playing for?
Unlike Stastny and Finger, Arnason can't fall back on the young/rookie excuse.

Finger made a big mistake and I knew it the minute it happened that it was going to hurt us. Stastny also cost us a goal and has been miserable this series. Call it youth, or whatever, it sucks but I can't just point the finger at them.  Sure if one of those mistakes doesn't happen we may have won.  But the biggest slap in the face is the much improved/still can't get the job done power play.  It continues to be streak and can't score when necessary.  We score even once on those 6 chances and this game ends in our favor in regulation.

Re: I too agree

I'll add to my comment above:

Finger out, Leopold in.
Arnason out, Hlinka in.

These changes are no-brainers at this point.
