WCS Game 2: Avalanche At Red Wings, Preview And Open Thread

Gut check time. As in, seriously, every Avalanche player should check their stomachs, ribs, and any other body parts for illness, sprains, breaks or any other kind of injury before suiting up this afternoon against the Red Wings.
Wojtek Wolski, we learned yesterday, is out for the rest of the series. Peter Forsberg is as reliable as Republicans banning abortion or Democrats creating universal healthcare. Don't expect him to play. If he does, it will be a nice surprise.
His absence clears the way for some guy named Jaroslav Hlinka to play today, whoever that is. I vaguely remember him, but it seems like years ago since we saw him on the ice.
Jaroslav Hlinka needs to have the attitude that "I’m going to play the game of my life tomorrow."
If there was ever a chance for a guy to start proving that he is a PLAYER in this league, tomorrow is it.
I don’t think Peter Forsberg is going to play in Game 2, so Hlinka has the chance to come in and do something finally - and he’s got the skill to do it. This guy was the top forward in the Czech League last year. He needs to take that knowledge and translate it on to the playoff ice. He’s playing against a lot of guys that came over from Europe and have made some names for themselves, so why not him too?
If he doesn’t, he’s going to be Just Another Guy, and I think he’s better than that. But it’s up to him to prove it.
No pressure, Jaroslav. You haven't played in a hockey game since March 30th (0g, 0a, - 1) and you'll be dumped into the second round of the NHL playoffs with no prior experience in them, a coach who doesn't like you, and a team reeling from the loss of two major offensive contributors. No pressure.
If Hlinka gets his name on the scoreboard at all it will be a small miracle. Let's hope the best for him.
The good news is that we'll likely see a return of the RPM Line, which had six total points in game 1, but the bad news is the Wings will do their best to shut them down. Sakic and Brunette will have to come up big.
Don't forget the rule about the goalie: he doesn't exist until the game is over or he's in a taxi on the way to a hospital. Don't forget. hockeychic has been allowed to return, but I'm power-hungry and I really enjoy banning people, so don't test me.
The game starts at 1 PM Mountain time, 3 PM Eastern. I hope I'm around for it, but I may be predisposed. We'll see. Don't think that excuses anyone else from the thread, though.
ESPN preview.

Don't stone me
But I'm going out to the sportsbar to watch the game with the Jibblewife (and a Red Wings fan from work). I know it's nearly blasphemy, but I made friends with the guy before I knew he was a Red Wings fan.
Either way they really need to win, because I don't take taunting well. j/k i do but it still REALLY sucks

I'm sure
everyone here will be thrilled to know the Avs stand a chance tonight because I won't be screwing things up. I was at an Aeros game during Game 1, and all season long, the Avs have lost every game they played while I attended an Aeros one. They were eliminated last night, so at least the Avs stand a chance. On that note, I'll be missing the thread today because of unfortunate circumstances known as my favorite day of the year, NFL Draft Day 1.

It has just starting snowing here so maybe its a sign of an Avalanche, as in, we are going to bury the Red WIngs. Here's hoping. Oh and if anyone is here besides me, can we get a goal girl to start things off?

No Forsberg or Hannan
Looks like Hannan was injured after taking a puck to the skate. He won't play. I guess the injury bug only requires an "S" to be in the name somewhere in order to strike. WolSki, Scott, ForSberg. Yikes.

God even worse
You know it's bad when you see Mike Milbury AND Pierre McGuire on the tube. Holy shit they're stupid.
Honestly, I think we're going to try a game without a goal girl today. Angie didn't work out, and the rest are on vacation.
I think I'm going to sit out this thread for the most part, too. I have some things to do---but I'll have the game on the tube.
It could be a bloodbath.

ref was otherwise occupied...
.... dreaming of Lidstroms sexy sexy body. What a bunch of schmucks. No other team gets away with the little cheap dirty shots that Detroit does. And that hit on Foote was just blatant. It's obvious the league doesn't give a crap about the head shots, or the dangerous from behind hits; unless someone gets hurt.

Let's be honest.
Let's be honest here. The NHL wants a Detroit-Pittsburgh finals. And they'll do what it takes to get it, just like the NBA did last year to get the Cavs to the Finals.

No way
I never bought "the league wants this or that" stuff. You think the league actively throws the games? I don't.
Now, do I think refs are scared of home crowds? Sure.
But complaining about the officials and thinking the games are rigged just because a couple of calls have been missed is lame. Let's not get caught in that rut.

There's no doubt
There's no doubt in my mind that the league tries to frame things to fit their agenda. They put Crosby in Pittsburgh to keep the Pens there.
In a league where you have people in positions of authority reading player e-mails, it's not exactly tin hattery to assume that a striking pattern of inconsistent officiating might be part of the effort to further their obvious agenda.

The ref's not going to call a major on the Wings unless they break someone's neck. And even then, it's got to be a star Avs player. McLeod? Jones? They were asking for it.

what a joke... no call on that hit from behind that creamed Foote?
not that it matters, so far the Avs are listless and getting out worked. The old Hedjuk that looks like he couldn't care less, is back. Hlinka's got a little passion, as do some of the grinders. Sakic looks slow, Stastny is tentative, and there just isn't any sign of cohesiveness.
I'll give the Wings credit, they use their sticks better than anyone else around; it's right on the edge of legality, but they're allowed to do it, and they do it better than anyone else out there. And they play better positional hockey than any team in the league.
I still hate them :)

Franzen
Franzen was always a good defensive player. He never had an offensive side to his game. He and Holmstrom have been working on that play in front of the net, and it shows. He's just as good at it now as Holmstrom is. And because he can skate reasonably well and play defense, he's a much better and more valuable player than Holmstrom. He's a good 3rd liner who can play on the PP, whereas Holmstrom is an average-at-best 3rd liner who can play on the PP.
The really scary thing is that both PP units can have that same aspect now. I wish we'd develop something like that. Maybe we can get Jones to do it next year when we have a coach who knows his rear end from a hole in the ground.

Just chiming in
- The Avs are sucking. Theo has been keeping us in this thing. I'm tired of watching them play around in their own zone and fail to clear the puck, then get to center and fail to get the puck deep.
- The non-call on Fillipulan tube's board on Foote was atrocious. And the incompetent fuck of a referee was standing right next to the play. Holy shit, how that isn't a board is beyond anyone who knows anything about hockey. Fuck the refs. Fuck the Wings. I hope someone boards the hell out of Lidstrom and puts him out for the rest of the series. If those cheap bastards can get away with a hit like that, they deserve retribution.

Avs have a clear advantage in scoring depth, overall depth and goaltending. Wings' top two defensemen are better than the Avs' top two, but the Avs are deeper on defense. Wings have a huge advantage behind the bench.
It's not a matter of loving the Avs. It's just reality. We're loaded with talent, we just can't seem to ever get anything done with it because of our coaching and lack of effort by the players.

sorry all, I can MORE than understand why Q doesn't feel comfortable playing that brain dead stiff. Horrible giveaway on a lazy PP pass, then he sort of hustles down on defense only to flail away worthlessly at the puck while the Wings score. Screw Hlinka. Screw this game. Screw the Wings. I don't think so
While the Avs obviously could play a helluva lot better, I don't think it's an effort thing so much as a talent thing. I mean, I sort of doubt that in the week or so since Minnesota, they've all collectively decided that "Hey, we don't care about the game we've spent our entire lives playing."
I think it's more likely that a team with Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Holmstom, Franzen, Lidstrom, Rafalski, Chelios, et al. is a little more difficult to play against than a team with Gaborik, Demitra, Rolston, Koivu, Burns, and not much else. Especially with the Avs' injury problems.
Which is not to say that the game today wasn't an absolute shit-show, or that Q's apparent plan to start Theodore again isn't retarded.

What I don't understand
is why you'd act like Holmstrom and Chelios are worth mentioning here. Detroit is Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Lidstrom, Rafalski and now Franzen. That's it. This isn't a deep team. It's not an overpoweringly talented team. Their level of talent isn't even comparable to that of Colorado.
It is definitely an effort thing. Sakic, Smyth, Hejduk, Brunette, Stastny, Foote, Leopold, Liles, Theodore, Salei...even with Svatos, Wolski and Forsberg out, you're still talking about a team that is far more talented and far deeper than Detroit. With that much talent, to be losing this badly to an inferior team, it can only be two things...effort and coaching. Coaching is obviously a problem. And if you have been watching the last two games (or hell, the last decade and a half), it's quite obvious that effort is a huge problem as well.

Inferior team?
Seriously?
You realize that the Wings swept the Avs in the regular season, right? That they shut the Avs out three consecutive games, right? That they had the best record in the league, while the Avs were three losses from not making the playoffs, right?
And, okay, so Chelios and Holmstrom are not the players they used to be, but they're better than Skoula and Fedoruk, or whoever their equivalent on the Wild would be, which was my point. That the reason the Avs suddenly look terrible is that their opposition is suddenly much more talented.

Nope.
The Wings swept the INJURY-RIDDLED, PRE-FORSBERG, SALEI AND FOOTE Avs. The Wings had the best record in the league while playing in the worst division in the league (or right in the running for worst with the Southeast).
Skoula is better than Chelios. The Wild equivalent to Holmstrom as far as depth would probably be Mark Parrish, who is better than Holmstrom. The Wild have seven proven offensively gifted forwards. The Wings have three. Four if you count Franzen.
The Wings aren't deeper or more talented than the Wild. The Wings just have an intimidation factor that the Wild just don't have.

Dude.
The Avs don't have Forsberg, or Wolksi, or Svatos, and they didn't have Hannan today.
The Wings did play in the Central. They also went 15-2-3 against the Northwest. Meanwhile, the Avs were 7-8-1 against the Central, not counting the games against the Wings.
Chelios had 3 goals and 9 assists and was +11 in 69 games while playing around 16 minutes a game. Skoula had 3 and 8, was -16 in 82 games, while playing around 20 minutes game.
Holmstrom had 20 and 20 in 59 games, finishing +9. Parrish had 16 and 14 in 66 games, finishing +2.
So, basically, no. Skoula somehow finished -16, a number that's usually reserved for guys on lottery teams, not division winners, while Chelios had one of the better plus/minus numbers in the league. Holmstrom had more goals and more assists in fewer games, although to be fair, he did average a couple minutes on the ice.

Send to Q to Siberia
He just gets dumber by the day
"He's got a hot stick right now," Colorado coach Joel Quenneville said. "Everything he touches seems to be going in."
here's a novel idea, fucking put someone on him so he can't touch the puck.
This here's my favourite though
Quenneville said he does not expect to make a goaltender change.
Why the fuck would you put Theo in again, he's let in 8 goals in 2 games and been yanked in both games in the second round of the fucking playoff's, how can you give him a third chance in a best of seven series down 2-0. He played great during the first round but that's no rason to persist with him when he's playing shithouse. Put Budaj in and see what happens, if he doesn't do any better, unlikely since he's only given up 1 goal in the time he's played this series, then if you want go back to Theo, it'll already be too late by then.

talent

That is absolutely ridiculous. Not a deep team? Not as talented as Colorado? I guess you didn't notice their fourth line controlling the puck in your zone. You're also forgetting about Draper (3 Stanleys), Filpulla scoring goals, Stuart, Holmstrom (3 Stanleys), Drake, having two #1 goalies (Osgood 3 Stanleys), etc.
Detroit is an extremely deep team. Heck, even the guys sitting out are as good or better than your fourth line and probably third line...Maltby, Meech, Downey, Kopecky, Ericsson, etc.
The Wings rolled four lines. You seem to forget that, and that Franzen isn't out there alone. I know you want to make excuses, but at some point reality needs to set in. There's a reason the Wings are #1 in point differential and shot differential, and won the President's Trophy.

Ah, Wings trolls.
Draper and Drake are completely useless. Stuart is okay, he's essentially another Sauer at this stage in his career. Holmstrom is a one-dimensional third line forward who is useful on the PP because of his ability to screen the goalie and score (valuable) garbage goals. He's a liability defensively, and contrary to popular belief, he's not a very physical player. Filppula is a dime-a-dozen 3rd liner. Detroit doesn't have a #1 goalie, much less two of them.
Stanley Cups won is not a valid measure of a player's talent. Craig Simpson has as many Cups as Datsyuk and Zetterberg combined. By your argument, he's better than both of them. And if you're going to talk about Cups, Osgood has ONE Cup, not three. He was Vernon's backup in 96-97 and was playing for the Islanders when the Wings won their 3rd Cup in recent history.
Detroit didn't roll four lines today any more than Colorado did. Actually, if you look at the ice time numbers from today, Detroit played their first and second lines a lot more heavily than Colorado played theirs.
Detroit is not a deep team. They have two (three if you count Franzen) offensively gifted forwards, two really good defensemen, a really good coach, and they play very good defense as a team. They have a reputation and an intimidating mystique.
Nobody is making excuses. Colorado lost because Colorado's got a couple holes. It's frustrating to have more talent and lose because of things that shouldn't be a problem. It's probably even more frustrating to lose to a team that has the exact opposite strengths and weaknesses that you have. But oh well. I didn't expect the Avs to make the second round when the playoffs began. Missing the playoffs probably would have been better long-term, but there's nothing we can do about that now.
If Colorado starts playing like they did in the first round, the Wings are in serious trouble. But this team is playing like they did at the midpoint of the regular season, and that's not a good thing if you're an Avs fan.

Draper and Drake are completely useless.
LMFAO
he is a penalty killing specialist and great at it. he's got speed, experience, and can chip in with a timely goal here and there. oh, and coughSelkecough
Drake is a role player who brings experience and leadership. neither is useless.
Holmstrom is a one-dimensional third line forward...contrary to popular belief, he's not a very physical player.
LOL
you have no idea what you're talking about, so I'm not even going to bother saying anything other than this...
you Dive fans need to learn that the word depth doesn't mean you have three lines and two defensive pairings of Datsyuks, Zetterbergs, Sakics, Lidstroms, and Footes. it's about having four lines you can trust, that are unique in their play and who they can handle, and who contribute on the score sheet. that is an exact description of the Wings.
Detroit doesn't have a #1 goalie, much less two of them.
LOL
Osgood 27-9-4 2.09/.914
Hasek 27-10-3 2.14/.902
Stanley Cups won is not a valid measure of a player's talent.
depth is about more than pure talent. it's about role players, experience, leadership, reliability.
Craig Simpson has as many Cups as Datsyuk and Zetterberg combined. By your argument, he's better than both of them.
show me where I made the argument that Cups = talent.
And if you're going to talk about Cups, Osgood has ONE Cup, not three.
actually, he has two. he won one behind Vernon in 97 and one himself in 98.
Detroit didn't roll four lines today any more than Colorado did. Actually, if you look at the ice time numbers from today, Detroit played their first and second lines a lot more heavily than Colorado played theirs.
rolling isn't about ice time, it's about impact. again I point you to Detroit's fourth line controlling the puck in your zone.
If Colorado starts playing like they did in the first round, the Wings are in serious trouble.
LOL
But this team is playing like they did at the midpoint of the regular season, and that's not a good thing if you're an Avs fan.
what you have to realize is that the Wings are doing what they have done all year - impose their will on teams. it's not about the Avs not being able to do it, not having the energy or determination...it's about the Wings being so good they won't let them. the only period so far where they let them was the second in game 1.
keep in mind the Wings were 3-11 in February. yes, that's right - they only won 3 games in February (one was a 4 goal shutout of the Avs). and they still won the President's Trophy.

The other option is to argue, at length, about things that ultimately don't matter. Sure, you could prove all day long that the Avalanche are a better, deeper, more talented team than any other in the league. But if they don't win games, who cares? None of it matters if they lose.
And they're losing.

How do you feel about him?
he's a great player, worthy of a truckload of respect. a great captain and leader.
however, next time you're comparing the Avs top forwards to the Wings top forwards, remember Zetterberg turning Sakic inside-out...and that Zetterberg is a Selke nominee (and will probably win it) this year.
comparing talent for talent in the top forwards, the Wings have TWO Selke nominees. Datsyuk led the league in takeaways by a TON. how anyone can say any of the Avs forwards are better than those two is beyond me.

The bottom line
I guess the bottom line is this...the Avs, as a collection of talent, are far far better than the Wings and probably every other team in the NHL. I can't think of a single team with such a deep, talented roster.
The Wings, as a team, are far better than the Avalanche. Over the past thirteen years or so, the Wings have been probably the best team in the league. There have been times where they were the best team AND the best collection of talent, but this isn't one of them.
Talent and results are not one and the same. See the New York Rangers c1996-2007 for a very good example. Would I rather have results than talent? Short term, yes. Are the Wings more talented than the Avs? Not by a longshot. Are the Wings a better team than the Avs? Sure looks like it. Are the Wings going to beat the Avs this year? Most likely. Do the fans of either team have anything to do with it? Not at all.

Well, to be honest...
I refuted all your arguments before you even made them. That's why you clung to misdirection ("my guy won eighty Cups in one season"), useless subjective stats (blocked shots, hits, giveaways and takeaways are 100% subjective and thus irrelevant to a statistical debate) and stats that aren't relevant to individual players (+/-).
But I don't expect you to understand that. You're a Wings troll. I've heard and destroyed your same arguments a thousand times in the past, usually by people who argue them better than you have.
