WCS Game 3: Red Wings At Avalanche, Preview And Open Thread

Okay, first of all, I'm proud to announce that I've been meeting with a psychologist for the past two days and major progress has been made. I'm no longer superstitious about goalie names. The therapist helped me to realize that not saying the name(s) of the Avalanche goalie in the past two game threads didn't do jack to prevent the Red Wings from scoring a crap ton of goals. So I'm over it. Feel free to compliment Jose Theodore (or attack him) in the thread, as MHH no longer believes in silly things like superstitions.
As for Theodore, I still think Budaj should get the start tonight, but I understand the other side, and the ESPN preview (linked below) suggests that Theodore was indeed still sick in game 2, so both of his consecutive meltdowns may have been due to fever and nausea and not a simple reversion to his 2007 self. Of course, that begs the question, why the hell did Coach Q let him play? But whatever. That's in the past.
Tonight's game is the present, and Theodore will be back in net. Hopefully the team doctor returns his Pimp Cane and the shutting down of the Red Wings offense can finally get underway.
Peter Forsberg is still a maybe, as always, and at this point I don't care. If he plays, great, if not, whatever. If he doesn't, though, don't expect to see Jaroslav Hlinka on the ice again. TJ Hensick skated with the team in practice yesterday and it wouldn't shock me to see him in the lineup. Not that it would help, since he grew up a Detroit fan and could very well be a traitor in our midst. If he scores a goal against the Wangs, I'll put my suspicions aside.
Finally, Coach Q says there's a chance that Scott Hannan will return tonight, which means he probably won't return. Jeff Finger was somewhat serviceable in game 2, so I assume he will continue to fill the open spot if necessary, only this time when he hits somebody maybe it will actually break up a play or two. His four hits on Saturday didn't do jack to stop the Detroit onslaught.
UPDATE: Seriously, what next? Even though Coach Q said Ryan Smyth's no-show in practice yesterday was nothing to worry about (link above), Helene St. James at Freep.com reports that Smytty will miss tonight's game with a foot injury. Holy god kill me now.
It hasn't been a good week for Denver sports. The Avs are down two games to none, the Nuggets just got swept by the Lakers, and the Rockies have lost four in a row and have one of the worst records in baseball. In the NFL draft, the Broncos oh my god I don't care about football. Anyway, a rough week for Denver.
Can the Avs turn it around? For the love of Roy, please let them win this game. Getting beat again might drive me to drink for the first time in twelve years, and as Bill Bixby used to say, "you wouldn't like me when I'm drunky."
So let's get a decent game 3 thread going. Remember, goalie names are not off-limits tonight, Detroit fans will be deleted/banned if they're hostile (it's my house, my rules), and for the love of god, don't feed the trolls.
The game is a late one tonight, starting at 8:00 PM Mountain time, 10:00 PM Eastern and will be on Versus after the Penguins get done beating the Rangers again. That Chris Drury is such a diver.
ESPN preview.

In a sea of sucktitude Saturday
Hlinka, Arnason and Sauer stood out to me as the suckiest sucks to ever suck. Dan W. will never be able to wear his Hlinka jersey with pride again.

Hlinka
After the season, make sure he wears it and take a picture of him, That is for sure one that should end up on StraightCachHomey.net

Re: In a sea of sucktitude Saturday
Sauer wins hands-down, but yeah, Arnason and Hlinka were pretty awful.
Dan better keep that Hlinka jersey, because after this season it will be a true collector's item. Poor Hlinka is headed back to the Czech league.
yep
Hlinka's going home for sure. I too think we'll see Hensick tonight. Well, especially with that horrible news about Smyth.

Lineup
With Smyth now out, and with Forsberg a maybe, Hlinka might get a new lease on life, at least for one more game.
Then again, Johnny Boychuk is also up practicing with the Avs, and though he's a D-man, Coach Q has played him as a forward before. You never know...
How
do you have a hockey game, or sports period without some level of superstition? Mike has done his best to instill a deep respect of superstition in me. That being said he definitely has to watch tonight, because he missed both Game 1 and 2.
:-)
Re: How

'A deep respect of supersition' huh? So that's what we're calling it now? That's better than Winky, I guess...
;)
Re: How
Look, all the superstitions did was drive me crazy. I can't handle the insanity of insanity.
I'm trying to be a normal person here, so don't try to drag me back to the dark side. And if I have wings one more night for dinner I'm going to vomit.
Superstition
I heard being superstitious makes you go crazy. quick nobody be superstitious, lest ye end up in the crazy house.

Well...
My plan to not watch any more games this season is out the window, thanks to a phone call I got yesterday. Turns out a friend had a few extra tickets in their luxury suite, and there's no way I'm turning that down. It'll be my first playoff game, first game not in the upper bowl, and HOPEFULLY the first time I see Foppa play live. I just really hope the team shows up to play.

I should add...
that as of writing the entry is still in this state on wikipedia, but I saved the screenshot for posterity.

As of 4:40 PM EDT, the page is fixed. I hope they further tighten their security. The person who vandalized the page just now also vandalized it this morning and the security status wasn't changed at all.

No doubt, it was one of Bill's harem of idiots who did that.

Re: Long-time lurker here...
Wow, the page still looks like that as of 4:19 PM Eastern. Wikipedia was supposed to have secured it from vandalism, but I guess they're slacking today.
It's always good to know that rampant homophobia is still alive and well among Red Wings fans.
In fact it's now worse
KFAN to "KFAG" and Stanley Cups to "way less than the wings"
I guess that answers any question I ever had
about the integrity and validity of wikipedia. And I never had any questions about the integrity, or intelligence for that matter, of RW fans. Do they still do that thing where they burn down their city once a year?
by Bob in Boulder on Apr 29, 2008 2:29 PM MDT up reply actions
Re: I guess that answers...
I think they stopped because they ran out of buildings to burn. Take a look at Google Maps' aerial pictures of the "neighborhoods" around downtown Detroit some time. It's nothing but open fields now.
Emptytown indeed.
Took my wife for a ride
through Detroit the other day because she wanted to see the "Ghetto". She was amazed at how immense the ghetto is. Mile after mile after mile. She couldn't believe that pretty much every other house was burnt out with boarded-up windows.
Yes, they still set fires on Devil's Night every year.
The average Detroiter is proud of where they are from, but nobody you have ever talked to actually lives there. Everyone lives in the suburbs. Detroit is probably the only city in the country where it's a status symbol to say that you lived in the CRAPPY part of town instead of the nicer suburbs. You hear people say "you're not from Detroit, you live in the suburbs", where everywhere else I have ever been, the "city" is the metropolitan area.
by Neptune on Apr 29, 2008 3:59 PM MDT up reply actions
Not to mention
that the thesaurus of homophobia must be printed in Detroit. I can imagine the sacred brain cells that were burned out coming up with even less and less creative ways to make the same joke.
whoops
This was supposed to be a reply to the next topic. D'oh!

Kinda
Kinda fitting though, don't you think?
by Neptune on Apr 29, 2008 3:59 PM MDT up reply actions
What's funny about that is...
What's funny about this whole thing is that we're supposed to be the team full of homos, when all my European friends tell me that Sweden is known for their large number of homosexuals, and 80% of the players on the Wings are Swedish.
Not trying to fight homophobia with more homophobia, just pointing out the irony.

Superstition
I have a superstition about not being superstitious. If I be superstitious, then the Avs will lose, but because I am not being superstitious because I believe the Avs will win as a result, then I am in fact, being superstitious. o_O
by Mike the Avs Fan on Apr 29, 2008 3:13 PM MDT reply actions
You know
what's funny? I was pretty superstitious as a baseball player. Never touching foul lines, not walking on the infield before a game, breaking in hats and gloves a certain way, etc.
It's also well documented that I'm fairly superstitious as a sports fan for the Avs.
What's odd is that I have now superstitions as a goaltender. I've tried to start a couple, but they never seem to take hold. Lots of goalies insist on putting their gear on in a certain order or touching the posts in a ritualized manor, etc., but I never have done any of that stuff. Probably because I've never gotten on a streak where something would be considered lucky or unlucky.
Anywho, I'll be wearing the Avs 3rd for tonights game, and I'll watch until it turns into a rout.
Speaking of superstitions
would it be bad to mention how lucky the Wings have been, health wise, so far in this series? How they have not suffered any injuries to very key personnel such as Lidstrom, Zetterberg, or the Mule? How they are such a picture of health and injuryfreeness, that something sinister must certainly be just around the corner? Would that be bad, superstitious wise?
Injuries
I don't think any team is completely healthy in the playoffs and I believe a few Wings players are rather banged up but are still able to play at this point.
she is right
Datsuyk has a hang nail, Zetterberg has IBS, and Chelios is going through menopause. Tough times for the Winged Wheel indeed.

Chelios is waaaay too old to be going through menopause. His major ailment is that his bones and tissue are going through the fossilization process.

Don't forget post-menopause women are much more likely to acquire osteoporosis. And just look at the Wings injury report here:

Lidstrom- Questionable (Cervix)

Help w/ Goal girl
Anyone care to explain to me how to post an image while there is no Avs game on? Better yet, it's intermission for Pens Rangers right now. Thanks in advance.
2 ways
If you find an image of appropriate size (no bigger than 300x400 I think) in a url you can link straight to it. Just hit the "image" box. Then click "Add" and then preview.
If the image is too big you can resize it with an image hosting service. I use imageshack.us When there you can select "url" copy and paste the URL and select "resize image 320x240"in the dropdown menu. Then "host it"and a few moments later the image will be ready.
When it's ready just copy the URL in the "direct link to picture" (usually at the bottom) and use that URL as the one in the first paragraph here,
got it?

Rivalry over... Or Not
If the rivalry between the Wings and Avs is over...
Why do I still absolutely despise the Wings team and their fans? Nothing has had me in a worse mood the last few days than these games. I want to punch a Wing player but I'll settle for a fan. I truly believe doing either of those acts, besides a win tonight, will be the only thing that will make me feel better.
Frickin' Avs better work your butts off tonight or I'm going to burn down a house.

F*ity F F
Two quickies by the rws. We're back to playing the way we've been playing the whole fricken series. Couldn't clear the puck out of our zone if our life depended on it. F me. F the Wings. F Detroit.
and of course
Forsberg hasn't been on the ice in a while. Probably hurt again. F me again.
So, when do I start cheering for the Stars?
F Altitude too
So, I was surprised that McNab even mentioned that Forsberg was missing shifts. But why couldn't the clowns at Altitude follow up a little bit, focus the cameras on the Av bench to show whether he was even fricken there or not, show him going to the locker room at the end of the period if he was still on the bench, give every single fucking Av fan watching the info they want, now, on the fucking spot? Why? Because they suck, that is why.
there are...
...other Avs players playing in the game. did you notice?
why do Avs fans, and seemingly the players, pin all their hopes on Forsberg?

that he went to the locker room. Great. Well folks, this experiment at least helped to make things interesting for a little while.
This thing isn't over. But the Avs need to play much better D than they did in the middle of that period. No more free fricken passes to the net boys.

How the hell

Hensick held
and prevented from coming back to the puck on the 2-on-1 with Lappy. Horrible non-call by the stupid fuck ref watching the whole thing.

The sheer volume
of picks that are being set and not called is ri-damn-diculous. Hannan is getting anally raped in the corners by Detroit forecheckers, but apparently we'll have to wait for paternity tests before somebody is called for it...
It's games like these that make people think the NHL has an agenda with matchups.
my bad
i watched the replay. Draper hooked Hensick to keep him from getting to the rebound. Obvious penalty, took away a scoring chance, and no call. Thanks you stupid mother fucker.
by Bob in Boulder on Apr 29, 2008 9:41 PM MDT up reply actions
Is it sad?
When the best player on the ice for the Avs has been Hensick? A team with this many veterans can't help him.
You know what. It is sad when I start to think Arnason has had a good game.
I Say
Cheers to any player who comes out in the playoffs and plays their hearts out. There is nothing sad about that.
I guess so
Good for Arny and Hensick. Not so for the rest of the team.
Actually I think Jones has been pretty good too. And Stastny fffuuuuuuaaaaarrrrggghhhh! I'm not even thinking clearly.
McLeod
was strong in the first period too (other than the dumb penalty). They seem like the only guys skating at all for the avs
I said it before
when 4 of your top eight forwards (Wolski, Svatos, Stastny, Smyth) are not playing, we don't have a chance against a team with Detroits depth.
Yeah
We are fucked. We are seriously, 100% fucked. If Jose Theodore had not gotten the flu and would've played at the same level as he played the Wild, we might have had a chance. But he did get the flu, and Theodore has sucked this series. But, either way, we are fucked. Fucked.

If and when SA is way ahead in the deciding game of the SA-Suns series, someone from the Suns needs to absolutely, positively, take Horry out, hard. He more than deserved it after that crap he pulled last year. Hell, he took out Nash. Someone on the Suns needs to take out Duncan or Parker.

the minute in the first when Detroit scored two was pretty bad. That gets my vote for the worst minute (actually, 58 seconds).
Ok
We fought this game. I won't burn down someone's house. I might still punch a Wing player... none handy? How 'bout a fan? Nope.
I'll just punch a wall.
Third Period
Despite controlling the puck and the momentum for most of the third period, the Avs couldn't tie it up.
And now, despite a close game, they're down three games to none.
Great.
And another star player hurt, just to top it off.
I know you're talking about
Stastny, but Hannan was laboring at the end there too.
It's official. We ran out of luck with the injury bug. The hockey gods have spoken.
Re: I know...
Yeah, Hannan hit the boards hard feet-first, and considering that his foot was the source of his pain before, that can't be good.
We might actually see a Jones-Hensick-Stewart line in game 4, along with the triumphant return of Wheels (Kyle Cumiskey).
Re: Wheels
Liles owned Zetterberg in the last 10 minutes of the game. That was some of the finest defensive work I've seen #4 put in all season, for what it's worth.
JML
Has really stepped up in the last month and a half and played like he can play. He is superfly like Cumiskey without as much liability.
Well, at least
we saw a little glimpse of our future tonight. Jones and Hensick should turn out pretty well. We were robbed twice by obvious trips in the 3rd, but you can't rely on decent or even fair officiating to bail you out when you don't play well for 60 minutes. They finally went balls out in the 3rd, and were gassed at the very end.
Crap. God I hate the Wings. Hate, hate, hate the wings. Worse than dog crap on my shoes.

Plus, sorry for the football reference but, if Crosby needs to win a cup a la Peyton Manning style, might as well get it out of the way. The pens won't be able to afford crosby, malkin and staal in the future. It can't happen.
Re: hehe
Yep, if they're going to do it with the crew they've got, it has to be this year. And so far they're 7-0 in the playoffs, with a possible matchup with the Flyers ahead. I like their chances.
I'd be all over the Pen, Flyers or Habs
over either the Wings or Stars. But next round, given the choice of lesser of two evil, inbred, mfing, devil worshipping teams, I'd have to choose the Stars.

Screw that
I'm jumping ship on the NHL playoffs. If my choices are Flyers, Wings, Stars, or Pens, I choose an early start to my summer.
If there were a way...
...for the Pens to win the Cup without Crosby winning one, I'd be cool with that. But I'd even root for a Canadian team to win it before I would the Pens.
Can you imagine the fellatio if Crysby were to actually win something? My word. You'd never hear the end of it.
If the SCF is Wings-Pens, I am not watching. I can't think of a worse scenario.

Why am I watching this crap
the Altitude post game fellating of the Wings organization. I think I am going to puke. Did I mention that I really, really, really hate the Wings?

I don't mind the Wings.
I admire a lot of their players, and their coach is probably the most underrated in hockey.
It's their fans that are downright disgusting. I know of maybe ten who are worthy of breath (and they do that breathing through their mouths), and that's only because I live in Detroit and know a lot of Wings fans.

ugh
I feel sick. I'm going to listen to some angry music. Altitude is already talking about the future with the rookies. I'm not ready yet damnit.
