One Candidate Out: No Patrick Roy Behind Avs' Bench
According to Adrian Dater, Patrick Roy has decided that he is not actually interested in coaching the Colorado Avalanche next season. His sons still play for the Remparts and he'd like to see them through their major junior careers:
But Roy said he does want to coach in the NHL at some point, probably when his younger son, Frederick, leaves junior hockey.
"When Fred is done, it will be different," Roy said. "But this is OK with me for now."
Frederick Roy, 17, a center, played five games for the Remparts this past season but is expected to play a larger role next season. Roy's older son, Jonathan, 19, has played goalie for the Remparts the last two seasons.
So speculation on that particular subject can finally cease.
For what it's worth, at the end of the article Dater casts Kevin Dineen and Todd McLellan as the top two candidates, with Pat Burns and Ron Wilson as more experienced but likely secondary. Who really knows, though? Dineen and McLellan have teams that are still playing hockey right now and can't be interviewed until their playoff runs are over.
So it might be a while until anything further is known.

according to...
this HF post, Frei called this yesterday. Apparently he also said in the same breath that the coaches the Avs want are still coaching, and that's the reason for the delay in the search.
No matter what actually happened, it's a good thing to not be considering Roy. Roy may be a good candidate down the road, but he needs significantly more seasoning.
I remain fairly clueless about the names being tossed around -- I just don't follow much hockey outside the Avs and the Eagles -- but I'm still hoping for a young up and comer, not a retread. I understand Burns is everyone's golden boy here, but I just feel that the franchise needs a fresh face and a brand new style.

Re: according to...
Yeah, while I really like Burns and think he'd be a great coach for any team, I definitely feel a "fresh face" could be successful. And nobody wants to be successful than a young coach looking to build a good reputation. Young (or just inexperienced) coaches have a fire that some old vets have since lost.
I trust FG will make a good choice. He made a good choice in letting Q go, after all.

I agree
with the 'fresh face' approach. All kidding aside, the Detroit assistant coach, Todd McLellan, is my favorite at the moment. He responses to Dater's questions are EXACTLY what I want to hear out of the next coach of the Av's's mouth.

Re: I agree
Mike, send me an email at some point today. I sent you one but I fear your spam box may have eaten it. Or you're just ignoring me. That would be equally believable.

Whew.
I think Roy will be a good NHL head coach one day, but that day is not today. I am glad he's going to stay put.
I'd love to see him join the team as an assistant coach when he's ready to make that leap, and then depending on how he does, he could take over when X is done.
I also heard somewhere that Bourque might be interested in an assistant coaching position. I wouldn't mind seeing that happen.
