Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

For The Love Of Sakic Part II

Just so you know, Mile High Hockey will be sponsoring the Joe Sakic page at Hockey-Reference.com as soon as "the check" clears and the message is approved.

It's kind of pricey at first-glance but not really that expensive as far as advertising on heavily-trafficked sites goes.

The message will appear as such for a full year.

And if you don't get the reference, watch this.  Mike Haynes, get better soon.

UPDATE: Message is now up on Super Joe's page.

UPDATE 2: I'm also sponsoring Mike Keane's page.  Message should be up by tomorrow.

in a related vein...

I've sponsored SOS' page, but couldn't come up with anything even remotely clever for my message. if anyone (Mike) has any good ideas, I'm open...

Re: vein

Which Mike.  Am I on the spot now?

No pressure...

No pressure...

How about:

Paul Stastny.  Not Peter, not Marion, and certainly not Anton.  Paul.  It's not that difficult people.

Meh, I'll keep thinking..

Re: yes, you

How aboot:

When it comes to Sons of Stastny, let's just say that Yan probably isn't Peter's favorite.

That's probably not very nice.

by Joe @ MHH on May 9, 2008 8:34 AM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

funny

but yeah, too mean-spirited. especially since we're going to sign Yan this summer.

by David Driscoll-Carignan on May 9, 2008 8:47 AM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Re: ...

Yeah, you're probably right.  Four out of five Stastnys have played for the Quebec/Colorado franchise so far, so why not make it 5 for 5?

by Joe @ MHH on May 9, 2008 9:51 AM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'd be totally on board

with matching SoS jerseys.  That would RAWK.

by Mike @ MHH on May 9, 2008 10:37 AM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

How about something about

carrying on his dad's legacy for the same franchise?

Paul Stastny, carrying on his dad's legacy of greatness for the Nordique/Avalanche franchise.

Don't know.  Lame?  I've always wished the Avs would do more in the Can to honor their Nord past.  Like have just one banner up  with the Nord logo and the numbers of the players that were retired there.  It would even have to mean that the numbers stay retired ... just some sort of acknowledgement.

by Bob in Boulder on May 9, 2008 9:22 AM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

How about

My name is Paul Stastny.  Peter is my dad.  He's like, 90 years old.  He played in a different era.  If the jerseys and team names aren't good clues that we're completely different people, then you probably should retire Mr. Maguire.

Over the top?  I don't think so.

by Mike @ MHH on May 9, 2008 10:36 AM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If they retire Nords numbers

does that mean SOS has to change again since i'm assuming the Nordiques retired Peter Stasnty's 26

number 26

the doing number 26 proud thing is probably my favorite one so far

by David Driscoll-Carignan on May 9, 2008 10:50 AM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ok, lets try again

How about:

This model of Stastny has all features you've come to expect: scoring-talent, grit, and a distinctive grill.

Well done Joe

I liked the apples reference.  I noticed some ahole sponsored Forsberg's page.

I wanted to "save" Foppa but I got there too late.  Oh well.

Just wondering

How much did it cost to sponsor Sakic and Keane, respectively?

Mir ist egal.

by Selanne on May 9, 2008 9:27 AM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Re: Just wondering

$40 for Sakic, $10 for Keane.

by Joe @ MHH on May 9, 2008 9:50 AM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Good News!

Michel Plasse's page is only $10!! Do I dare to dream?

Re: in other news

I want to sponsor Peter McNab's page, too, if only to remind people that he was involved in the whole Boston Bruins Vs. Fans shoe attack incident.

Thomas/Neptune

I am shocked he hasn't laid down $10 for this yet

Come on, give me a little credit...

...I'd at least come up with something witty. And incredibly mean-spirited.

There's one I have my eye on...

...I'm just hoping it's still there when I get my blog moved over to a hosted domain and server.

Re: There's one I have my eye on...

You can buy it now and change the link and message at any time.  The sponsorships are done through a user account so you can purchase multiple pages and edit them as necessary down the road from one central interface.

by Joe @ MHH on May 9, 2008 1:02 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If this is true, Joe

I was wondering if you would want to add something about SJoe's clutch performances in the playoffs, including the 8 OT game winners?  Keeping the apples ending, of course ...

Yours is fine.  I just think that is one record of real signficance and I didn't see it acknowledged anywhere else on that site.

by Bob in Boulder on May 9, 2008 1:24 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Re: If this is true...

Oh, I can add it, and I should.  I'll see what I can come up with.

by Joe @ MHH on May 9, 2008 1:25 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I might do that then.

Any idea who runs this site? I know the guy who runs Hockeydb, and to say that he's a tad lazy would be an understatement. I'd love to see hockey-reference become better and more well-known than hockeydb.

by Neptune on May 9, 2008 2:08 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Re: I might do that then

Sports Reference LLC.

They run a number of similar sports statistics sites.

Right now, the only advantage that Hockeydb seems to have is a more complete record of minor league and international statistics.  Hockey-Reference seems mostly oriented around NHL players and once they leave the big league, their statistical histories stop.

Mike Keane, for example, has no statistics for his time with the Manitoba Moose since the Lockout on HR, whereas the numbers are available at HDB.

I've read that they're looking to increase their comprehensiveness as time progresses, and the page sponsorships are going to help make that possible.

by Joe @ MHH on May 9, 2008 2:25 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No.

Why would I sponsor him? I'm not going to spend money on players I don't like.

by Neptune on May 9, 2008 8:03 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Considering

you defend him to anyone who'll listen, and alot who won't i find the fact you dislike him hard to believe. If i hate someone i dont bother defending them to anyone but clearly you're different

by Savage33 on May 11, 2008 4:55 AM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Attacking an illogical argument...

...is not the same thing as defending someone.

I like more players on the Wings team than I do the Avs. One of the few Avs I like is someone I am hoping they get rid of (again) this offseason, because he serves no purpose for this team. Who I like couldn't be more irrelevant.

I like Budaj better than Theodore. It's not even close. But Theodore is clearly one of the better #1s in the league, and Budaj is clearly nothing better than a backup.

Would you rather watch a mediocre team full of players you love, or a Cup-winning team of players you don't care for? I'd much rather win a Cup than fawn over some douches that I happen to favor.

A desire to win...I guess that makes me "different".

by Neptune on May 11, 2008 10:13 AM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You missed my point

I never said i hate Theo and want him gone, or that i want a team full of my favourite players even if the team sucks. I said I DON'T Bother defending someone i HATE, which is what makes us different. Not that you want to win and i don't.

by Savage33 on May 12, 2008 12:58 AM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well

Well, I am more interested in logical validity than defending players I like and ignoring those I don't. I can't stand Brett Clark, but if he were a good player, I'd want him to stick around. I absolutely loathed Ray Bourque, still do and always will, but I was as excited as could be that we got him. Same with Blake.

Nice quote for Keane

Only downside is the apostrophes come out as boxes and not apostrophes.

by Savage33 on May 12, 2008 1:01 AM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Re: Nice quote for Keane

Yeah, I noticed that.  I'll see what I can do but I may have to contact them to fix it.
