Forsberg And Theodore: Where I Stand
There are no two players more controversial and/or talked about among Avalanche fans than ex-Av superstar Peter Forsberg and ex-superstar goalie Jose Theodore.
Let me go ahead and get this out in the open for everybody to know: I think BOTH players are wrong for the Avalanche.
You'd think saying "Theodore is wrong for the Avalanche" would be common sense, that everyone would instantly agree with it. You'd be wrong. If you've ever been to the Avalanche.com message boards, you already know that a small but annoyingly vocal group of (mostly young, mostly female) Avalanche fans adore Jose Theodore and think the only reason he has sucked consistently for years is because nobody gives him a real chance in net. This, of course, is false. But some people still proclaim that Peter Budaj is the bad goalie on the team.
Let's be absolutely clear: I don't hate Theodore. I'm sure he's a nice guy, even if his choice of female companionship is a bit questionable sometimes. But there is no getting around the fact that he is simply bad at his job. That's the problem. The Avalanche, for two seasons now, have paid Theo $6 million to be bad at his job, to sit on the bench, and to draw negative attention. Peter Budaj is not an amazing goalie like St. Patrick was, but he's good at his job and requires $5,200,000 less than Theodore to do better work. How anyone can favor Theo over "Boots" is beyond me. But I guess he's cute so that's all that matters.
As for Forsberg, or "Floppa", as I like to call him, I think his time with the Avalanche has passed. He was an indispensable asset to the team during the time he was with Colorado, but he's a physical disaster area now and worse yet, he's getting old. He's 34, has two rotten ankles and is missing his spleen. Even if the surgery he just underwent turns out to have saved the sorry mess he calls a right foot, he'll still be an injury time bomb, just like he has been for the last three seasons. Don't get me wrong, he's a great player and still a great scorer, but the Avs don't need him back and can spend the leftover cap money they still have in more constructive ways. Don't be suckered by sentimentallity. Forsberg is gone and should remain so.
The great memories he left the Avalanche aren't going anywhere, though.

Call me sentimental
But let's bring back Foppa, at a reasonable price. He's not going to be getting the 5.75 mil that he received last year. His health is not the greatest, we know. But at the same time, we are talking about one of the most singularly gifted athletes of our generation with upcomparable vision on the ice. Forsberg at 80% is still better then 90% of the NHL. If he's willing to come back for a couple mil, I say give it a shot. High risk, yes. High reward, possibily. As we've seen with the Rangers, there are ways of structuring contracts that make the salary considerations less of an issue, but I'll admit that I'm not exactly sure how that works.
I love it, I signed up for this site no more than twelve hours and am already in disagreement with the people in charge. Thanks for getting the site up anyway.
Re: Call me sentimental
I respectfully think you're totally wrong about this, and we'll just have to agree to coexist peacefully. The good news is even though you may want him to, Forsberg probably won't be returning at any rate.
At least I hope.
Forsberg
I'd like to see Forsberg back, and it's not just nostalgia talking. Yes, there's health questions and he's not always going to be on the ice. For the Avs, that's not a huge issue - they have a strong lineup already, and he would be an enormous bonus when he does play.
He'd fit in well with the way the team plays - doing the dirty work behind the net, drawing the double team on the cycle before passing to someone in front of the net. I've said this before, but I think he'd be the perfect compliment to Marek Svatos. And, again, when he's not able to play, the team is still formidable.
I personally think Forsberg might be the difference between making the playoffs and going deep in the playoffs.
And Theo? There's a little voice in my head telling me that some how, some way, Jose Theodore is going to be VERY important to the Avalanche this year. If Vegas took bets on NHL comeback player of the year, I might put some cash down on him.

about the avs msg board
I hate the Avs msg board. The 14's that troll are jackasses. There was one thread that was asking which of the goalie picks this year is going to be a better goalie for the Avs in the future. Theo is done, the only reason he isn't gone is because the buyout combined with a goalie signing would come out to about the price of his salary, so he stays and grabs bench for $6 million . I remember one of the games against Dallas last year in which the Avs were up and he continually put them down and ended up losing, after being replaced and the Avs clawed their way back but it wasn't enough, infact nearly every game against the Stars the Avs were up and ended up losing. the Stars announcers were bagging on Theo the whole game, I've never heard announcers be so subjective against another team, it was hysterical, nonetheless.

very true, I find it difficult to not make fun of him with my other friends who are die hard sharks fans. A favorite memory of mine is when he tested positive for illegal substances for using propecia even though he has a full head of hair.

smart guy
I totally agree with everything that Anonymous hero guy wrote. I can just tell that he's not only got this subject nailed but that he's handsome.
Seeing Forsberg
in an Avs uniform again does have a certain appeal to it, but I think bringing him back would be the equivalent of many of the moves the late '90's/early '00's Rangers would make: bring in a veteran who's getting up there in age and not exactly the most reliable person to stay on the ice. Of course, Forsberg is better than all those guys the Rangers brought in during that period.
Really, I think the Avs need to move forward and put a new brand of hockey on the ice, which has already started. Adding Forsberg would be a step back. However, when Forsberg wants to retire, he's more than welcome to sign a one-day contract so he can retire as member of the Avalanche.

I'm absolutely fine with that idea. Hell, he could even play two games as far as I'm concerned.
Re: Forsberg And Theodore: Where I Stand
Remember, he was brought in to be the playoff catalyst in Nashville and that didn't work out.
Ohh, and Theo sucks. Beautiful head of hair, or not, he is a sieve. His reaction-based, aggressive style back in Montreal somehow morphed to a blocking/pure butterfly style now. For a smaller goalie, he appears to have depth issues, as he's frequently too deep in his crease (IMO), and tend to collapse rather than present a larger presence in net. Whether all of this was a result of horrible taste in women, venereal disease, bad hair days, or just a diminishment of skills when he's making $5 mil+ whether he plays or not, only he (and his barber) know for sure.
Crikeys, I should just have posted this on my blog...

Or in a diary post!!
Yeah, but...
you're assuming he can GET healthy. Aren't his feet and ankles junk now? Surgery or no, I don't know if I want to put any faith in him again. I remember when he got hurt in training camp in Philly, I told a bunch of Flyers fans "Welcome to life with Forsberg!".
Do we really want to go through that again!
go through that again?
53 points? yeah, I'd take life with Forsberg.
