Searching For Wojtek Wolski

Avalanche winger Wojtek Wolski, a first-round pick and potential star forward among the younger players in the franchise, was a healthy scratch last night against the Wild.  It was just one among many games this season in which Wolski has sat in favor of lesser players.

Despite his goal against Edmonton on March 13th, his lackluster performance in the game against New Jersey two days later was enough for Coach Q to shut him down again.

Says Adrian Dater of Wolski's perceived struggles:

Wolski and Hlinka the forward scratches tonight against the Wild. Wolski’s descent to healthy scratch-dom continues to be a slightly big story around the team. Hard to believe the former first-round pick and the team’s fourth-leading scorer is sitting out a game in mid-March while Cody McCormick and Cody McLeod are in, but Joel Quenneville just hasn’t been happy with Wolski’s overall game lately.

The feeling is he hasn’t been using his size still, not battling hard enough for pucks or in front of the net.

Fair enough, but Wolski is certainly not alone, and a perceived lack of effort is probably not a great reason to bench a strong offensive player (who puck-handles extremely well) in favor of an unskilled pest who doesn't effectively protect the star players or drop the gloves in the face of a challenge---even against a much larger brute like Derek Boogaard.  Tip: punch him in the back, it's been sore all year.  This is, after all, the final stretch run to the playoffs, in which every goal scored and every game won is of immense importance.

Wolski has eight points in his last 15 games, and four points in his last 10.  That's definitely not impressive, but when you've got guys like Milan Hejduk and Ryan Smyth chronically under-performing, you need any and all extra help you can get.  Wolski's benching is even more confusing considering the continued appearance of Tyler Arnason on the ice and even on the power play.  Prior to the March 13th drubbing of Edmonton, Arnason had scored only two points in fifteen games, including a scoring drought of six games from February 12th to the 22nd.  For a guy that can't hit and is inconsistent on defense, that's a pretty tremendous lack of offensive performance.

Arnason has not been benched once this entire season.

Maybe Wolski's just lazy.  Maybe he's too comfortable on the team and isn't trying hard enough.  I have a suspicion that this isn't true, especially considering the Rocky Mountain News piece that highlighted his hardcore dedication to training during the offseason and his determination to make an impact on the team.

I suspect Wolski's inconsistency is being compounded by the system of play imposed on him by the Colorado coaching staff, not to mention the constant personnel changes due to injuries and impulsive line changing that have plagued team chemistry all season.

Wolski's still a good player, has a good work ethic and---I feel---has a place on the team.

With the playoffs looming and the Avs' chances dimming with each late-season loss, it might be prudent to toss as much offense at each opponent as possible, even if that offense is still young and finding its way.  You can't build confidence by inconsistently punishing young and inexperienced players while rewarding veterans who contribute nothing.

Arnason should go

I agree that Arnason should be the one to go. He has been useless this entire year (except against Edmonton). I just hope Wolski puts 100% in even when Q disrespects him all the time. Do any of you guys see a change in our coaching staff? I mean it seems like the media is the only one that like Coach Q and his ridiculous mustache.

Re: Arnason

I'm afraid the playoffs might be a double-edged sword.  If the Avs make it, it will be great, but Coach Q will get a new contract.  If they miss the playoffs, it will be bad, but Coach Q won't be back.

At this point I just don't know.

Re: Arnason

So what's more important to everyone? I don't think I could take two years in a row of not making the playoffs, but at the same time I'm ready for a change. Ugh thats a tough one. What's your opinion on Theodore coming back? I would be willing to sign him for 4/yr . Maybe a little more but not the 6 he has been getting.

Re: Arnason

To be honest, if it means a new coach and a new perspective, I could handle another year missing the playoffs.  If the future's bright, present struggles can be tolerated.

As for Theodore, I'm reserving judgment---I just don't know yet.

noooooo nono no no hell no

If the Avs miss the playoffs THIS season, with Forsberg and Foote back, then that's it. The fans abandon the team, it goes to 4th in popularity rankings. The Avs cannot afford to miss the playoffs and need to do everything in their power to make them. I don't even give a rat's ass about Q, even though he's an idiot, we MUST, repeat, MUST make the playoffs this year. Missing the playoffs two years in a row, especially with such a revamped roster, is absolutely unacceptable. It might be worse in the long run, but the fans will most certainly be disappointed if we miss.

I've got a legit question

We all know that throughout his head coaching career, Q has been schizo with the goalies, but is there another issue we're overlooking?  Does he have a good track record in developing young players?  He's the only pro coach the Wolski has known, and after a stellar junior career and rookie season, he's tailed off.  I don't think it's a simple case of the sophmore slump.  Maybe Q + Wolski = degraded talent?

Q

Coach Q has shown his ability to crush everyone.  No one on this team is playing that well including Sakic and you can see how frustrated he is.  How can you make a cohesive team when lines are juggled incessantly?  My guess is, he is taking out his frustrations on the wee guys like Wolski.  He is pretty soft spoken and easy going from what I have seen.  Poor Hlinka doesn't speak English.  Maybe Q is prejudice prick. Cumisky was sent down for "rehabilitation" as was Richards.  With all of these actions, how can a coach build trust with a team let alone chemistry or a good game when everyone (minus the stars) are in fear of being out of the line up?  It is proven that human behavior truly changes with positive reinforcement, not negative.

Re: I've got a legit question

That's a really great question.

I'll take a look at the rosters of all the St. Louis teams Coach Q was in charge of and see what kinds of names turn up, what their statistics were like before, during and after their time under Q and see if I can find any trends.

by Joe Dunman on Mar 18, 2008 6:48 PM MDT up reply actions

Okay

Here are some of the notable players that entered the NHL (or close to it) under Coach Q in St. Louis from 1997 to 2004:

Pavol Demitra
Chris Pronger
Ladislav Nagy
Jochen Hecht
Barret Jackman

Demitra and Pronger were obviously stars from the beginning and blossomed very quickly.  They both did very well under Q.  Nagy, on the other hand, did okay, but didn't really improve until he got extended playing time with the Coyotes.  Hecht was a 40-point player with the Blues and became a 50-point player with the Sabres.  That's a small improvement that could be attributed to age.

Jackman was supposed to be a transcendent defenseman much like Chris Pronger, and he won the Calder Trophy.  But a chronic injury to his shoulder slowed him down and it was several seasons before he regained his form.  Not Q's fault, obviously.

One guy that stood out to me, though, was Peter Sejna.  I don't know much about him except that he won the Hobey Baker in 2002-03 with Colorado College (the year after Jordan Leopold won it).  Sejna scored 82 points in 42 games that season.  He was never drafted, but signed with St. Louis in late 2003.  In 03-04, he only played 20 games and then spent most of his career in the AHL.  He now plays for Zurich in the Swiss A league.

Did Q squash his potential?  Or was Sejna never cut out for the NHL?  If anyone knows more about him, please chime in.

by Joe Dunman on Mar 18, 2008 7:16 PM MDT up reply actions

Sejna

Even as a DU fan it's hard to admit just how great Sejna was in college, but he falls into the Sertich and Krog group of Hobey Baker winners.  Good college players, but NHL tweeners.  I wouldn't fault Q for him.  The only reason he ended up in St. Louis was because Peter Stastny was still a scout for the Blues at the time and the fact that Demitra is his idol.

I liken the Wolski situation more to how Q has handled Richardson.  Richardson should be in the NHL and much to his credit, he's tearing it up in Lake Erie right now.  I understand the wrist injury set him back this year, but I didn't think he was handled properly last year either.

Wolski's deserved to be benched at times, but it would be nice if Q would bench an underachieving vet every once in a while or not fall in love with fourth liners and placing them on the second line (Hello Brad May).

Re: Sejna

Are you trying to say that Brad Richardson is not the same quality player as Wyatt Smith?  That he's actually got talent?

Sandy Clough would be very upset.

by Joe Dunman on Mar 18, 2008 9:38 PM MDT up reply actions

Brad May?

Are you serious?  I don't agree with the vet comment.  Finding chemistry - which BTW it has been found - is the key. Yeah, bench Sakic for not scoring goals.Great logic.

by texacogirl on Mar 18, 2008 10:46 PM MDT up reply actions

I think you misunderstand

Part of my statement was tongue-in-cheek, but I wasn't referring to Sakic at all.

Re: Brad May

Easy there, she was just making a general point, no specifically targeting anybody.

by Joe Dunman on Mar 19, 2008 4:09 AM MDT up reply actions

I believe Jori meant...

I believe Jori meant players like Hejduk and Brunette rather than Sakic who has produced even on his "bad" nights.  Q has a real soft spot for veterans and in particular veteran grinders.  He's had a history of trying to put May, Lappy etc... on Sakic's line for reasons he only knows.

Re: I believe Jori meant...

It seems to me that Coach Q operates on some kind of bizarre merit system when choosing lines instead of sticking players together that have complimentary skills.  I think Q would be better cut out for a pee wee team sometimes.

by Joe Dunman on Mar 19, 2008 8:05 AM MDT up reply actions

Correct

Thank you Dario; you nailed my point exactly.
