WCQ Game 3: Wild At Avalanche, Preview And Open Thread

Let's get this show on the road.
Had the Avalanche won game 2 on Friday night, they'd be cruising into the friendly confines of the Pepsi Center with a 2-0 lead in the series and everybody would already be speculating about their second round opponent. But they didn't win game 2. Instead, it's all even as the Avs head back home to Denver.
Two things have to happen for the Avs to win tonight and tomorrow night in Colorado. First, they have to quit blowing leads. Two games they scored first, two games they found themselves in overtime because they let the Wild get momentum. Second, The Can has to put Xcel Energy Center to shame. Each member of the much-maligned Avalanche fanbase needs to take out a couple of loans (for tickets), swallow their disappointment (at the coaching staff), and act like they've been cooped up all winter and are ready to bust out. The Can needs to be bursting at the seams. Denver used to be a place other teams dreaded to play.
Remember what the Pepsi Center looked like in 2001? That same intensity needs to happen again, only louder. Dater wants you to bring it, so bring it already.
To the brave and valiant boys in Burgundy and Blue: No more overtime. No more one-goal wins. Let's get a blow out, led by a Paul Stastny hat trick and a wicked Joe Sakic wrister in the third period.
Remember the thread rules:
- The Colorado Avalanche goaltender has no name.
- All are welcome, but play nice.
- The "goal girl" tonight is Marissa Miller.
- A new thread will begin once this one hits 380 comments.
- Niklas Backstrom will get a shutout, the Conn Smythe and the Vezina.
The game starts at 8:00 PM Mountain time, 10:00 PM Eastern and will be on Versus and CBC. If you'll actually be at the game, take a cell phone photo of your view from the stands and link to it in the comments or send it to us via email. If you're playing from home, well, posting comments here is all you need to do.
ESPN preview.

You're aware that soccer isn't a real sport, correct?
(I played in high school, I should know.)

it's time for...
Bruno and Stastny to contribute!
also, I read Dater's blog post. I was at the first Forsberg game, and I'm pretty sure the place was absolutely buzzing. Maybe it wasn't playoff-style raucous, but it wasn't the playoffs yet. Bit of an over-reaction by Dater imo -- fans will be there and ready to rock, they just haven't had much to get excited over for 2 years.
Re: it's time for...
And you have to imagine that most Avalanche fans are aware of Forsberg's injury history. Everybody knew that his triumphant return would likely be followed by missed games if not full-blown catastrophe.
Oh, and his return wasn't exactly set in stone, either. He was day-to-day from the moment he signed.
I wonder if that may have had an effect on the fan reaction.
At any rate, I wasn't there, so I'll assume that you're both right.
good news!

not funny
please say it is a joke. Although, didn't he play for the Wild? Maybe they just want to pump him for inside info?

certainly isn't
have they not heard of a phone? Easier, faster and cheaper way to get that insider info.
Goal Girl
I can appreciate the female form as well as the next guy but now that I'm no longer the lone female here, don't you think there should be some pheremone equalization in the form of some "goalie boy" pix?
Re: Goal Girl
The Goal Girl is by female request. Talk to your counterpart texacogirl, she's the one who always asks for them.
And if you think it's absolutely necessary, post your own goal boy. 400x400 maximum size.
If the Goal Girl Works...
You can't change it, imo. If you have noticed, we have scored after almost every posting of the goal girl in the playoffs.
Besides, you want Joe to post another gut wrenching picture of Goddard, the ugliest mug in hockey? Ewww.
Re: If the Goal Girl Works...
Re: Hey Face!
Yep, that's a great site. I know Karen who runs that site, she is a DIE-HARD Avs fan. She's in Calif. so she started as a Kings/Lappy fan and is so devoted that she switched her devotion to the Avs when Lappy came on board (even flys here for games). Great people, she n' her husband.
Preds Game
Anyone watching the game before the game? I'm chasing Baby @ MHH around the house, but I'll be trying to watch too. This little guy wears me out!
Mike's still at work, but I hope he'll make it home in time for the Avs game.
Expecting
and hoping are two different things. I'm really hoping they don't get swept. Is that really too much?
Expecting
I was expecting the Preds to make more of a series of it. They still can.
I don't expect them to win, but I could see them stretching it 6 or 7

WCQ Game 3: Wild At Avalanche
by Jon Rothrock on Apr 14, 2008 6:21 PM MDT reply actions
Backstrom
I would just like to go on record saying Backstrom is the greatest man to ever live. He is also immortal. He single handedly built the great wall of China, brought back reading and writing to medieval Europe, he won the Nobel Prize for, um, chemistry (twice!), and invented velcro.
If only more people would listen to him we would have cold fusion and a peace solution for Israel and Palestine.
Would anyone blame me
for disowning my parents. I move to San Jose, and the season after I leave my mom meets this contact that hooks my folks up with discount tix for Avs games in about row 10, at a discount. So she has been going to games all year and will be going to game 4 tomorrow at a fricking discount.
When I was there she got tic through work... second to last row behind the home goalie. Not that I'm bitter
by Jibblescribbits on Apr 14, 2008 6:40 PM MDT reply actions
I wouldn't blame you
But if they offer to fly you out and tie up any loose ends with employers and such, they should win an award or something.
Where is everybody?
Where is all the pre-game chatter? Are you guys not as pumped for this game as the previous 2?
Or is it just that it's Monday, and we're all still recovering from a crazy weekend...
Re: for me
Same here.
I think we're all resting in preparation of the heart attacks we're all sure to have.

Penalties
It's so frustrating when Versus cuts away from the game and you don't even get to see the penalty calls.
Grrrr.
GOOOAAALLL
Brunette from Sakic and Wolski.
Wolski's puck handling is freaking amazing.
Bench him again, Q.
And The Can is loud and packed tonight. The fans really did the team right.
Oh yea,
And btw, I'm here now. My girlfriend and I are taking a break from Battlestar Galactica to watch the game.

Wrastlin'
McLeod is scrapping out there. It looks like the Wild are taking the bait and getting pissed. Nice.
Flip off to the officials
WTF...how many times is guite going to get knocked down in front of the net with out an interference call? The puck isn't there!
Re: Flip off...
If it's any consolation, Cody McLeod has gotten away with all kinds of stuff so far. He was literally punching other players near the end of the first and the refs didn't even look his way.
First period
Great second half of the first period, but the Avs have scored first in all three games now and both previous times they gave up the lead.
The boys better come out in the second period firing with all guns.
We need...
one of our great 2nd periods where we outscore the opponent in bunches!
by Americanario on Apr 14, 2008 8:46 PM MDT up reply actions
That PP
will come back to haunt them, I gare-un-tee it.
Atrocious. They didn't kill a kitten, the kitten took her own life to spare herself the horror...
Was that arny
that missed a wide open net from about 4 feet away right at the end of the 1st?
UN-FUCKING-BELIEVABLE...
Not sure
but earlier he clumsily fell all over the puck and then cleared from the offensive zone while we where on the PP...put it right between our 2 defenders.

Hit and Run Observations
Staz looks a bit off offensively, his passing is more erratic.
Hejduk made a sweet power move to draw that penalty.
Forsberg caused a giveaway trying to dipsy doodle pass.
Overall, the team is playing well enough to win so far.
by Hardshell_Taco_del_Lowayne on Apr 14, 2008 8:50 PM MDT reply actions
Yeah
You're right, they're "just good enough." Definitely not lights-out good yet. That's what the second period is for, I hope.
Finally
A good call by the refs on Voros for interference.
The Avs get another chance to kill a kitten.
Again
Another one-two kitten killing punch.
The penalty runs out on Voros and now Carney goes to the box.
And which team is Arnason playing for?
Jibble_Man
You are banned from talking about the Avs powerplay on game day.
If that 5-3 was going to bit them in the *ss, the last three powerplays were the game killaz.
Sorry
Yeah, I jinxed that one up royally tonight...
by Jibblescribbits on Apr 14, 2008 11:58 PM MDT up reply actions
If there is a plus side
at least the PP went down shooting this time...but damn it, what good is it to finally get these calls if we are going to shove them down the Wild's collective throats!
It's official
The Guite-Lappy-McLeod line has officially gotten under the skin of the Wild.
Guite made contact with Backstrom, and Boogaard went to pick on him, drawing a scrum involving Lappy, McLeod and Shepard. Guite, unfortunately, was the only one to go to the box.
Avs on the PK.
Dirty
Sean Hill takes down Forsberg and gets called for holding or something similar (I wouldn't know, Versus cut away).
The Wild don't look that hot right now. But it's still too close for comfort.
Marissa says, "Do it, boys."

WHAT?
Why the hell is Forsberg in the box? For being taken down and roughed?
Holding? Hill was on top of him!
Double Hell No!
They better not call that even. That was some BS there, tackling Forsberg on the ice and holding him there. I guess the ref problem followed us from Minni?
that was.....
that was uber-bullshit.
by Mike the Avs Fan on Apr 14, 2008 9:23 PM MDT up reply actions
Wow......
The officiating in this game is atrocious. How do we not get a pp out of that mauling of Forsberg by Hill?!? Un-fuckin-believable. You know, I'd be complaining a little more, but it's not like the pp helps us anyway.......

All I have to say is
What is this kid waiting for?? Arny has looked like a superstar in waiting for many games. How has he become such a liability? What the hell was he waiting for?
Go for it, be a superstar, not a liability.
Re: Arnason
Seriously. Turnovers, missed shots, blown chances.
He's been garbage all series. Are you telling me that Hlinka wouldn't be a better choice at center?
Hlinks!
Honestly, I would love to see what Hlinka would have to offer in this series. I think he could be tops.
He'd HAVE to be an upgrade
just for the simple reason that he ATTEMPTS to play defense on occasion, and he knows how to bury open shots.
Re: upgrade
I honestly think one of the worst injustices of the season was Q's playing Arnason over Hlinka all year. If you have a choice between two non-hitting centers, why choose the one that can't score or play defense over the one who can do both?
btw
Guys, look at how well Backstrom is playing this game. He is stoning people left and right. If it were Roy or Brodeur in that Wild net, we'd be up like 7-0 by now. Backstrom is truly cementing his reputation as the best playoff performer ever.

Third period underway with part of a power play left for the Avs.
A kitten eats its last meal somewhere.
Wolski
You know, Wolski's talent is showing more and more with each game. He's an amazing puck handler and has good speed. And he's still super young.
He and Stastny have got to stay with the team for a very long time.

Damn Avs
I can't afford this to go late...I have to be up early and won't be home till late tomorrow.
It Was 1 Goal
A 1 goal lead is hardly enough to win a game in the playoffs. We should be bitching about the offense.
It the fact
that for the third time in three games we have let them crawl back into the game in the third period. We shut them down for 40 minutes and then collapse...

Heart attacks vs. other playoff games.
Boy, it sure was a nice break to watch a bunch of other teams this past weekend. No heart attacks, no brain damage from lack of oxygen from holding my breath, just enjoying some hockey that I wasn't so emotionally invested in.
Agreed
Just being able to sit back and objectively watch other teams play and laugh at the idiocy of Sean Avery. It truly was priceless.
Re: Agreed
And watching the Eastern Conference teams NOT just dump and chase on every possession was hard to comprehend. I'm so used to the mucking along the boards of the West that I forgot some teams actually skate the puck in and shoot it.
You Mean
The east coast actually plays hockey? Avs used to know how to do that, coming from the east and all.
Although
I have been rooting against the Lames. I never thought it would happen, but my hate for the Lames has over taken my hate for the Sharks. They beat the crap out of Marleu last night.
Re: Although
I was watching when Marleau got hit. It was incredible, and the game changed immediately.
Let's see Gaborik or Rolston get hit like that (but not injured, of course).
Of Course
No injuries. But some blood draw would be awesome. Did Marleau ever stop bleeding that entire game?
Re: Of course
Nope. I think his nose is still dripping blood.
He was completely taken out of the game with that hit.
Lappy
Lappy has been stellar in this game. He's blocked shots like a man with nothing to live for. God bless him.
All Hail Lappy
I swear that guy has so much hockey heart. Let the hockey Gods smile on him for a game winning goal.
So close
Liles with a great shot but Backstrom gloved it. The Avs were cycling very well on that shift.
Hopefully it will be worse
For the Wild D-men....

Man
More chances for Stastny, still nothing to show for it. He's really stepped up in OT, that's for sure.
Icing
Yet another reason why the league should switch to automatic icing. Jeff Finger goes the opposite way around the net not expecting it to bounce funny, and the Wild get possession.
The rest is history.
What a heart-breaker.
Mmmm
Not good. If we were a SC team, this wouldn't be so close, imo. I have to go to bed. Sleep is good.
If we could score on the PP
This game would have never been close.
Bad mistake for Finger, bad break for the Avs.
But once again this game should have never gone to OT...

Oh shit
That was bad. That was really bad. I doubt we'll win tomorrow now. Either way, the Wild are going to win game 4 imo. Even if we scored, we'd be too gassed to play hard tomorrow, and now that we lost, we are gassed AND the Wild have the momentum. We're very screwed right now. I hope we can steal a couple more in Minny, although that's unlikely.

Give me a break
Bad play by Finger, but not the reason we lost. I understand the emotion, but in this case it's ridiculous. He was one of our best players tonight.
Just got back from the game about a half hour ago, and that was one of the most gutless games I've ever seen the team play. The fans, who I've ripped on plenty of times, did their part for once. But the team didn't. Forsberg was terrible, Arnason nearly invisible, Wolksi disappeared, Sauer played scared, Hannan was utterly clueless, passing to no one in particular and not even attempting to be physical. Smyth not nearly as effective as in the first 2 games. Stastny looks scared, too, and needs to get his head out of his ass.
We lost nearly every 50/50 challenge, either by pulling out of it or trying to be cute and lifting a stick, instead of sticking noses in there and fighting for the puck. Arnason was especially guilty of this, worse than normal. It's not fucking shinny, Arnason, hit somebody.
We looked old and tired, not a great sign considering we had 2 days of rest and have to play again tomorrow.
Theodore was absolutely brilliant. I know the 3 Stars is a joke, but Norm Jones is a fucking moron for not giving Theodore the 2nd star. Backstrom made more saves, but hardly any of them were that difficult.
The worst part is the way Minnesota came into Denver and, except for the first few minutes, absolutely owned that game. Our forwards rarely punished their weakened defensive corps, and the team didn't take advantage of the emotion of the crowd. What a fucking waste.

You said give me a break. Ok that was bad.
Finger was not one of our best players, he was weak down low. Wolski 'disappeared' when he got saddled with Arnason. But really, I agree with what you are saying. Minny deserved to win, but a steal would have been nice.
