WCS Game 4: Red Wings 8, Avalanche 2

Well, thank god that's over.

Despite the hope that they would leave the series with at least one win, the Avalanche once again completely crapped the bed and lost to the Red Wings 8-2.  The sweep in the Western Conference Semifinals worsened the Avs' record against the Wings this season to 0-8.

0-8.

Of all the teams to go winless against, why the Red Wings?

Detroit fans can now gloat and revel in the fact that their extremely talented (and healthy) team easily dispatched a former arch rival completely decimated by injuries and crippled by poor coaching, both of which plagued the Avalanche all season long.  The only exception was the first round series against the Wild, when everything seemed to come together.

Just as the Avs got healthy, coordinated, and backed up by a solid goalie, it all fell apart again.  Ryan Smyth, Scott Hannan, Paul Stastny, Wojtek Wolski and Peter Forsberg all missed significant chunks of the series.  Can anyone imagine the Red Wings being so dominant without Pavel Datsyuk, Thomas Holmstrom, Brian Rafalski, Johan Franzen and Jiri Hudler?  The Avalanche offense, which clicked very well through the second half of the season and into the playoffs, was essentially erased, with only aging veterans and inexperienced rookies to fill the gaps.  It wasn't going to happen.

The Avalanche defense, which was so amazing against Minnesota, looked completely lost against the Red Wings.  Slow, out of position, and out-played in every aspect of the game.  Adam Foote had no answer for Pavel Datsyuk.  Kurt Sauer got embarrassed repeatedly by Henrik Zetterberg.  And Johan Franzen made everybody look stupid.

The goalies probably played as well as they could have behind such an inept defense.  That said, they both pretty much sucked.  Peter Budaj played very well in his early relief efforts in games 1 and 2, but his showing in game 4 was atrocious.  Jose Theodore was sick and sucking and then healthy and sucking, so at least he was consistent.   Honestly, I wouldn't be opposed to seeing Theodore back next season, as long as he's not making $6 million.  One bad series, considering how bad the rest of the team played and how bad the injuries were, should not be the end of him.

ADDENDUM: I think it's worth noting that even though the Avs got blown out in two of the four games in this series, they didn't flip out and try to kill their opponents.  There were relatively few cheap shots, no attempts to injure, no big brawls or sucker punches after the whistle.  The Avs didn't try to run Osgood, or hurt Zetterberg, or jump in the air while boarding Lidstrom.  Especially in game 4, when the score was 7-1 at one point, the Colorado Avalanche didn't go bush league on the Red Wings.  Minnesota Wild fans, take note.  If your team is going to lose, and bad, there are two ways to do it---and the Avs picked the right way.

Now we can focus on the rest of the playoffs without that sick feeling in the pits of our stomachs that always comes with watching your team lose.  Watching other people's teams lose isn't nearly as painful.  I can't wait to see the Red Wings collapse against the Stars or the Penguins dispatch the Flyers.

I'll probably be posting threads for the remaining playoff games if everyone is interested.  I know most of us aren't going to stop watching hockey just because our team lost.  I know some people expressed interest in the game thread last night, so I'll try to facilitate continued playoff chatter.

And let's save the speculation about the futures of Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg and all the rest of the Avalanche until the Cup is won and the off-season begins.  No eulogies yet, please.

Everytime a Red Wing scored

I hoped a part of Q's ego died. Maybe FG has a reason to fire him now. Injuries or not, Q never adjusted the team.

Never trust the lunch lady.

Re: Everytime...

It looks like Q never showed them video of the Wings, either, or even watched it himself.

Game 4

I'm sorry that the inury bug bit the Avs so hard in this series.  It would have been nice to see both teams healthy and going at each other.  I really hope this isn't it for Joe Sakic.

The Wings have Turco's number if they should face the Stars next.  I just wish the Flyers would lose now rather than wait for the Pens to dispatch them but I don't think it is going to happen.

Anyway, thanks for your posts which always amuse me and I wish our teams had both been healthy.  I would prefer that the Stars take out the Sharks tonight so it isn't too long of a wait for the Wings before the next round.

I'm glad the Avs didn't take runs at the Wings last night and that Q did not goon it up.  I know it is tough to watch your team get shelled.  I remember when the Avs shelled the Wings 6-0 in 97, that is the only time in my life I have left a hockey game early.

If there's one thing to be said for Q, it's that.  Unless of course he did order the team to goon it up and they refused because they quit listening to him some time in March.

yeah, I am exulting

I'll tell you why though....it's the same reason you write, "Of all the teams to go winless against, why the Red Wings?" Even though that old rivalry is gone (and if tehre were any vestiges of it, they've been laid to rest now), for Wings fans, it still was the Avalanche.

But not only for that, the Wings team on display last night was one that has a chance, one that I didn't think it did at the start of the playoffs. Call it being burned too many times by hot goalies, or whatever, but I really did think this series was going down to the wire...

And now, that dangerous thing, hope, is creeping up in me again. I t really started in the Wings power play that ended with the Franzen tip in from Lidstrom's shot, because as pretty as that was, it was probably the third best sequence of the power play. Just two shots before that, the Wings executed four, fast, tape to tape passes before someone zinged a shot off the post, the kind of thing you see in a video game, not at the highest level of real hockey.

So yeah, I'm hopeful, and that probably means you guys will get to quietly exult as the Wings fall down the line....or maybe you'll have to do with the knowledge that you were beaten by the best, if Stanley comes home to hockeytown.

Either way, I hope Sakic sticks around and takes down a couple more names on that all time playoff points list....I think he tied Dougie Gilmour with that last assist, right?

Re: yeah

Yep, Sakic is now tied with Doug Gilmour for total playoff points with 188.  He has surpassed Steve Yzerman, who retired with 185.  That warms my heart a little bit.

Thanks for being gracious, and thanks for participating.

Gilmour

Sakic may be tied with Gilmour, but we'll always remember the night that Sakic beat him up :)

Tough loss last night, the Wings deserved it, they wanted it more, and they've got themselves a beast in Franzen, I don't see Dallas standing up against that.   Some of our guys really disappointed me in this series, but I won't rant on about all that.
Congrats Wings, and best of luck in the next round.... Man I hate you guys.

For once the Wings look like they want it...

I work a Detroit native, so of course he is a Wings fan. And like he said today, for the first time in recent history the Wings are playing balls out every game.  Unfortunately, for the Avs they never took their foot off the gas last night, or in this series.  How many times did the Avs give up leads during the season because the "thought" the game was in hand? Detroit has  had a bad habit of that in the past, but not this year. The put the Avs away last night and did it convincingly.  You don't let a team stick around, even a team as injury plagued as the Avs are.

Damn I can't believe I wrote this...

Stings but...

It's all true. As much as it hurts to see your team crushed like that, I respect the Wings not stepping on the brakes.  I've never agreed with that aspect of the game that you have to "let up" and not "run up the score"

They weren't excessively celebrating when they scored and that's what really matters.  If they'd acted like school kids after the 8th goal, that would have been a different story.  But they scored, got the celebration over with and kept playing.  Good on them.

It just sucks it had to happen against the Avs.

Re: Stings

yeah that not running up the score crap only works for kids, any time it's a proper game you should do it, as long as you don't celebrate the 10th goal like a game 7 OT Cup winner i don't care.

What's everyone deal with the Flyers

I grew up an Avs fan but I also watch the Flyers since I would go to games with my best friends. They got grit and style and theyre on their way to the Eastern finals. Not to mention they are destroying the number 1 Eastern team. So now that I am embarrassed to be an Avs fan, Im going to root the Flyers.

Re: What's everyone...

I don't like the Flyers for the same reason most people don't like them: they play dirty.  Really dirty.  They didn't lead the league in suspensions this year for nothing.

But without getting into a big debate about them (I really don't care), I do want to cite a joke by one of my favorite comedians, Daniel Tosh.

He jokes on Kobe Bryant, but I think it's pretty applicable to the Flyers in a metaphorical kind of way.

Even Richards is being influenced

Mike Richards, formerly the class of Canada's World Junior teams, is getting influenced by the Flyers and it sickens me.  The last Flyers-Habs game, I saw Richards circle the net and punch Jaroslav Halak in the face...and then laugh about it on the bench after.

I honestly couldn't believe my eyes.

Theo

Honestly, I wouldn't be opposed to seeing Theodore back next season, as long as he's not making $6 million.  One bad series, considering how bad the rest of the team played and how bad the injuries were, should not be the end of him.

I was pretty hard on him last night, and he sucked big time this series, but I agree with the above statement. 4 games is a small sample size and throw in the flu and it would be a mistake to let him go based upon that.

The January-End of Wild series is much more than likely representative of his ability and his play than the last 4 games.

so i'm in favor of bringing Theo back. The problem I see is that FA goalies are going to be expensive this season. Theo is far and away the best one on the market, and it's not even close. Christobal huet is the next closest and then it's guys like Hedberg, Boucher, JS Aubin. That's going to drive up Theo's price.

I hate economicsc

Friggin' supply-demand.  Gets ya every time.

I'd be find with Theodore coming back on short-term and not insane dollars.

Re: Theo

Well, the worst that could happen is Theodore goes somewhere else and then Budaj becomes the undisputed starter---a role he's played well in the past (despite being young and having a few hiccups here and there).

And he's still pretty cheap.

by Joe @ MHH on May 2, 2008 11:15 AM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We'll keep one

of those guys, not sure we'll keep both. If Theo comes back it should be short term (1-2yrs) and for much less money.  Good play 1/3 of a season over 2 season and a month, even if it gets you into the playoffs, should not warrant a pay raise, or even a match any where near his current salary.

But then again who would come in as our backup? Weiman, Bacashua, and Wall are all in the system but I'm not sure if any of them are on par to come up...Bacashua does have NHL playing time, but....
Is Billy Sauer a senior, or does he still have college time?
