Despite few of the regular Avalanche players being on the ice, the team was relatively true to last season's form during the pre-season game against Phoenix on Monday night.  They went into the third period with a lead (despite being incredibly outshot) and squandered it at the very last second.  Luckily, Son Of Stastny came to the rescue.

The Avalanche scored three goals in the second period, with Marek Svatos, Paul Stastny and Wojtek Wolski lighting the lamp.  The Coyotes scored two, giving Colorado a one-goal lead throughout the third period.  Then, in literally the last second, Ed Jovanovski of all people scored on Tyler Weimann, sending the game to overtime.

But, staying true to his heroics of last year, Son of Stastny redirected a Kyle Cumiskey shot into the goal with just 47 seconds left in overtime to win the game.  Cumiskey had three assists.

Peter Budaj stopped 19 of 20 shots, Weimann stopped 22 of 24.  The Avalanche were outshot 44 to 22.

The Avalanche lineup was dominated by youngsters, with Joe Sakic, Ryan Smyth, Andrew Brunette, Milan Hejduk and Scott Hannan sitting this one out.  Jaroslav Hlinka, one of the oldest Avalanche players dressed and playing, had two assists, helping on Svatos' and Stastny's second period goals.

The next Avalanche pre-season game is tomorrow night against the Kings in Denver.
