More On The Schneider Deal

This place is quickly turning into Leoville.

Montreal needed a trade right away, and there was no guarantee there would be as willing a trade partner closer to the March 4 trade deadline. The Canadiens felt burned at the deadline last season when the Thrashers traded Marian Hossa to Pittsburgh.

“They were going to do something today or tomorrow,” Waddell said. “There was no doubt about it. It was going to be us or somebody else.” - Mike Knobler, Atlanta Journal-Constitution

According to Thrashers GM Don Waddell, the Canadiens were going to acquire a defenseman yesterday or today. And Adrian Dater on Sunday said he felt the Avs were very close to a trade. Could it be that the Habs were looking at both Leopold and Schneider and decided to go with the latter? Could the dramatic win on Sunday have moved the Avs from sellers to a wait-and-see holding pattern? I really have no idea (e4), but it is intriguing, yes?

A couple of other noteworthy points from the above article. One, Waddell said he was looking for prospects but could only get picks from Montreal. And two, as Doc mentioned in the comments last night, the trade isn't quite as lopsided as it first looked. The conditional pick that Montreal is getting is a 3rd, 4th or 5th.

Stay tuned for our next exciting Leopold update.
