Tonight's game highlights the difference this year between the Eastern and Western Conference. The Colorado Avalanche actually have one more point than the Ottawa Senators, but they are in last while the Sens are in 11th. Not that there's really anything inherently wrong with that .
The Senators have certainly struggled this year, but recently fired their coach (again) and have been hot lately, winning 5 in a row. Despite having Dany Heatley, Daniel Alfredsson and Jason Spezza, Ottawa is averaging just 2.46 goals a game. Curiously, the tandem of Alex Auld, Brian Elliott and Martin Gerber have combined for the 10th lowest GAA in the league. Auld has been the best of the bunch, and starts tonight.
One minor bit of trivia: the Senators were the last team to see John-Michael Liles wearing #26 and Paul Stastny in a #62 - they switched their numbers after this October 19, 2006 game. To celebrate this minor historical event, both players will sit out tonight.
I'm sure the Altidudes won't mention this at all tonight, so I'll spill it: after tonight, the Avalanche depart on a 6-game, 13-day east coast road trip and 3 of those games are against teams currently outside of a playoff spot.
