I am proud to announce the first ever Mile High Hockey Award For Greatness In Journalistic Understatement. Our first ever winner of this prestigious meaningless award is the Associated Press:

The Colorado Avalanche opened its six-game road trip with a third straight win that helped put the club in striking distance for a playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The rest of the trip hasn't gone quite as well.

You can say that again.

As you probably know, this is a matchup of two last-place teams. You have to think the folks at Vs are just tickled pink over that. The Islanders are in full sell-off mode - Bill Guerin will be sitting tonight in anticipation of an upcoming trade. Avalanche trade rumors are in full swing as well. Pierre Lebrun mentioned Milan Hejduk on Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday (he also is the latest to say that Giguere has been instructed to slash salary) and NHL.com is trying keep the Smyth trade rumors alive. I think it's safe to say that the next 48 hours will be very interesting, and all we really know about the Avs intentions is that we don't really know anything.
