Past Avalanche Drafts (Round 3)

We'll close out today's stroll through memory lane with a look at the Avs' round 3 draft picks. Tomorrow I'll look at later draft rounds.

Round 3 is the 2nd best for the Avs in terms of NHL games played. However, a big chunk of those games came from two players that the Avalanche weren't able to sign - Kurt Sauer and Bronko Radivojevic. Still, 5 players with 100 NHL games (soon to be 6) is a hell of a lot better than our 2nd round.

1998 3 79 Evgeny Lazarev  Kitchener Jr. B  Brian Gionta (82)
1997 3 55 Rick Berry  Seattle  197 2 13 15 -6 314 Jani Hurme (58)

1996 3 79 Mark Parrish  St. Cloud State  705 215 170 385 -40 242 Toni Lydman (89)
1995 3 77 John Tripp  Oshawa  43 2 7 9 -3 35 Alym McCauley (79)

The Avalanche haven't had a 3rd round pick in the last two drafts, but do have a 3rd this year (64th). Overall, not too many obvious "should haves" in this round, although Valtteri Filppula, Jordin Tootoo and Brian Gionta would have been nice upgrades over Eric Lundberg, Danny Boi and Evgeny Lazarev.
