In 1997, the Los Angeles Kings and the Colorado Avalanche started an annual tradition: a pre-season game at the MGM Grand in Sin City, usually the final game before the regular season starts. In two years, the Kings faced other opponents: San Jose and Phoenix. However, the match up has since been solidified as a Kings-Avs affair. This year, the game will be on Saturday, October 1st.
I can tell you from personal experience that it is a kick ass time. I know there are a number of MHHers who have attended the Frozen Fury in past seasons (sup, Canary, gl avfan, Stazz and Yeti?), and I'm sure they'd tell you the same thing. The past two years, Luc Robitaille has sponsored a charity poker tournament with players (current and retired), coaches, members of the hockey community, and fans, as well as some celebrities. Players who are not participating can often be found hanging around, watching the goings-on, and it's a great time to get signatures. Perhaps you, too, can be seen running through the casino in red heels, yelling, "John-Michael! John-Michael!" Okay, maybe that was just me. The teams have offered a "meet the team" party in the past for an extra fee. For those of you that play hockey, the Kings also usually offer a two-day on-ice clinic with retired NHLer Daryl Evans.
I highly recommend making the trek. It's been epic every year I've gone.
